In William Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet, he writes about an unfortunate love between two adolescents in Verona, Italy, during the Renaissance period. In the film West Side Story, Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins direct two characters into a hopeless romance during the 1960s in New York. Even though Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are distinct due to dissimilar settings, they share an almost identical plot. The personalities of the two female characters shape the futures of their romances in their storylines. Although Maria and Juliet share connections such as being rebellious, Maria is innocent while Juliet is more mature in understanding the concept of having a relationship.

The negative life changing experiences they face are a leading cause for them to refuse acting in accord with the prevailing idealistic standards which their society conveys. David suffers a lot under the oppression of Joseph, who keeps him in check by the threat of unjust force and authority that he rebels to defy the oppression present in his society. Her experience allows her to discern the fear of rejection others like her has to endure. Juliet’s arranged marriage to Paris prompts her to reject to act in accord with her parent’s wishes. The play West Side Story, by Arthur Laurents, is based upon the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Despite a few differences, both works, in essence, have the same plot. The source of violence in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is the ever-present hatred between families and between gangs, although, because of the "star-cross’d lovers" motif in Romeo and Juliet, the hatred plays a larger role in producing the ending of West Side Story than it does the ending of Romeo and Juliet.
The romantic tension between Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria in Shakespears original play and its modern day remake, Westside Story, is what makes them have such passionate and entrancing scenes. The main reason for romantic tension in these two plays is because the two couples can’t be together like they want to be. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.
