The amount of homework assigned has dramatically increased over the past few years. With new state standards and standardized testings, teachers are beginning to put more pressure on children. They are being sent home with six page packets and vocabulary words that are due the next day. Most children do not have the time or help to complete this much homework. Alfie Kohn’s The Truth About Homework states “Homework continues to be assigned - in ever greater quantities - despite the absence of evidence that it is necessary or even helpful in most cases.” Not only is all of this homework unnecessary, but it can have negative effects on the children as well. More and more children are beginning to feel pressured in school. Their teachers are assigning too much homework and they are expected to excel in their classes. But children are not understanding their work causing them to get low test scores. Struggling to keep up their their work and failing tests can have an emotional toll on them. For example, a child can begin to feel depressed or even develop a low self-esteem. Too much home can have physical effects as well. For example, with all their time spent on homework a child can begin to gain weight and become sleep deprived. Parents are often expected to help their children with their homework. Even though most of them do not understand, have the necessary resources, or the time to help. This creates additional stress for the parents and the child. Homework is stressor for teachers as well. Teachers have to create lesson plans, tests, class assignments, and meet state standards. Making sure that each child completes and turn in their homework is an unnecessary
hassle. Many education administrators would agree that homework helps children better themselves and the school. But the administrators are not the ones who have to deal with the negative effects. They don’t have to stay up late, or do research for hours, or try to explain why they don’t want to go to school today. Education administrators only care about two things: meeting state standards and government funding. A school that frequently fails to meet state standards will not be able to access grants and other forms of funding. Some teacher salaries are based on class test scores. But what education administrators fail to realize is that they cannot achieve either of those things without their students. Homework was very popular in the past, but now society disagrees. Homework is an unnecessary burden that children are expected to complete. Even some parents have a hard time understanding how homework might benefit their child. The amount of homework assigned needs to lessened or eliminated altogether. Having no or less homework will allow children to participate in extracurricular activities and be less stressed.

This statement describes the intense issue facing the American Education System today. More and more students are spending a lot of out of school time on enormous amounts of homework. The overabundance of homework is putting pressure on the students, along with their parents. Our nation has steadily focused on after school studying to the point of possible exhaustion. In this paper, I will attempt to explain how educators are relying on homework as the major form of education, and how the amounts are too demanding on the students.
Some people would argue that homework should not stay in schools because it decreases the amount of family time. They say that when a child is doing homework, it decreases family time because that child is not involved in the family but the homework (“Teachers…”). This theory has been proven wrong; in fact homework actually increases family time. Family time increases by the encounter the parents and children have while doing homework. It brings them together by how the children ask for help on their homework (5). The child will ask their parent or siblings to help them, and that will spark the family time. The parents will try to help and will not stop till their child understand how to do it. While helping with their child’s homework the parents can ask how their day went, and how that certain class was. Engaging in conversation always increases family time. Not only will they get to talk to their children, the parents will be informed of their child’s studies and how good or bad they are doing in school. Which proves that homework increases family time.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. Homework has been prevalent and considered vital in education for decades in the United States of America. For all the years it's been around and all of the changes that have occurred around it, it's peculiar that few aspects of homework have altered. With assignments being completed through new computers and tablets, and students learning lessons through the internet, the major focus in advancing homework as only been in increasing it's length, straying it from lessons taught in its preceding classes, and demeaning its value simply to a grade. Homework should be reformed to better benefit each individual student, as it's current ideology and implementation is flawed, causing homework to be largely ineffective.
Today, many students report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts found that 58% of the students surveyed reported between a great deal of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students in today’s time, have so many things to do that it is difficult for them to come home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after school activities and technology, only adds to the stress that is put on students.

In elementary school children should be worried about who can cross the monkey bars the fastest, not finish all their homework. Elementary school students should not have homework because it will stress not only the child out but, the parents and teachers.
