How Philosophy Relates to “The Truman Show” Truman, the main character of “The Truman Show” exists on the set of a television show, where he has existed his entire life, starring himself as the main character. Truman believes that he is simply leading a normal life, because the director and all of the actors on the show work hard to make it seem like reality, to make the show as realistic as possible to fool Truman. However, certain events start taking place which causes Truman to question his reality. From a group of unwanted pregnancies, Truman was selected to be the main character of a “reality” television show. The creator of this show, Kristoff, uses technical devices to keep control of Truman and what he does each day. Truman desires to explore the world, to go to Fiji. As a boy, he and his “father” went sailing the “ocean”. Kristoff then creates a storm to cause an accident which causes Truman’s “father” to “drown”. This “accident” was not real to the viewing audience, but it was very real in Truman’s mind. This results in Truman being afraid of the ocean and of boats, which Maness 2 was another way for Kristoff to control Truman. By making Truman afraid of water, it causes Truman to be too afraid to venture out in the world and travel. Later, Truman notices an object that falls from the sky. When he listens to the radio later on, it is said that it was a part of an aircraft that fell. In reality, it was a studio light fixture that had fallen. The next day, he is listening to the radio on the way to work and it becomes static, then it switches over to what all of the other actors on set are hearing in their earpieces. Truman finds this very strange and begins to think that people are following him. Later, it cuts back to when Truman was in high school and he is looking at a girl whom he likes. However, that is
