The True Crime Typically, a criminal is someone who breaks a law established by an organized society. Historically, law-makers become unethical making laws that no longer reflect the majorities’ moral code, but instead reflect the society’s morally perverted standards. In this corrupted society, the criminal becomes someone who uses the new laws to evade punishment for moral atrocities. The Handmaids Tail and A Study in Scarlet, argue that breaking moral laws defines a true criminal more than breaking state laws. This is illustrated by the main character’s views, physical appearance, and the use of Christianity. The main characters give most of the opinions and thoughts that the reader receives. Leading to the audience to view the true criminal as someone who the main character believes to have broke their moral code. Atwood shows the true crime is the moral one, when the commander brings Offred to the hotel room after being at the club. She thinks to herself after coming out of the bathroom, “The fact is that I don’t want to be alone with him, not on a bed. I’d rather have Serena there too” (Atwood 254). She does this while Offred is scanning over her room in her head and notices, “There must have been a chandelier, once. They’ve removed anything you could tie a rope to” (Atwood 7). She describes her bedroom as if it is a safe room for someone who is mentally ill. Removing a chandelier wouldn’t normally bring somebody to her conclusion, but Offred has obviously thought about committing suicide before. This is Atwood’s way of showing the evil of the Society and that Offred is just a victim trying to survive. She gives her the password of Gilead’s. She hasn’t used it for days. Also, Serena wants her to visit Nick because she know that the Commander, Fred is infertile. It doesn’t means that Serena is on her side, she’s doing this for herself. After the first night, Nick and Offred meet in his room, Offred continues sneak in his room every night. She stops visiting at the Commander’s place. Ofglen try to help again and give her the key to check the Commander’s office to see what they’re hiding. Offred silently declines her, she feel satisfied with Nick. (Atwood 270) This shows that she’s doing what she likes now. She refuses to break in Commander’s office. She was running out of the time and she decided to decline the opportunity of escaping the Gilead with Ofglen. That’s the symbol of non heroine where she only think about herself, not others.
Atwood makes it evident that Offred isn’t supposed to be the most aware character, in fact, her narration displays both ambiguity and hazy recollection throughout the novel. Her intention is for Offred to be interpreted as a complicated character though, so, she offers an ending that is just as ambiguous as Offred is, as a means to further the ongoing idea that she is three-dimensional. However, this could be an explanation as to why Atwood creates such an ambiguous ending: to further characterize Offred. The references to light and dark, however, foreshadow the fate of Offred as it constructs its own ambiguous interpretation, in which the way that light and dark contrast with each other creates a more vague ending; this can symbolize the fact
The stories, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, both have a character that breaks a social convention. In this case, both characters, George and Montresor, were murderers. It’s clear that these characters have broken a major law, but how and why they did it will determine whether or not their justification is enough.
Offred from The Handmaid's Tale uses different tactics to cope with her situation. She is trapped within a distopian society comprised of a community riddled by despair. Though she is not physically tortured, the overwhelming and ridiculously powerful government mentally enslaves her. Offred lives in a horrific society, which prevents her from being freed. Essentially, the government enslaves her because she is a female and she is fertile. Offred memories about the way life used to be with her husband, Luke, her daughter, and her best friend Moira provides her with temporary relief from her binding situation. Also, Offred befriends the Commander's aide, Nick. Offred longs to be with her husband and she feels that she can find his love by being with Nick. She risks her life several times just to be with Nick. Feeling loved by Nick gives her a window of hope in her otherwise miserable life.
Perhaps the most frightening aspect of Offred's world is not even its proximity, but its occasional attractiveness. The idea that women need strict protection from harm is not one espoused solely by the likes of Rush Limbaugh or Pat Buchanan, but also by women like Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon. This protectionist variety of feminism is incorporated in the character of Offred's mother, and to a certain degree in Aunt Lydia. Offred's mother is just as harsh in her censorship of pornography as any James Dobson. By burning the works which offend her, she too is contributing to the notion that women's safety is contingent on squelching the Bill of Rights. The restriction of sexually explicit pictures places the blame for sex crimes on women, again -- the women in the photographs who supposedly drive men to rape. Where have we heard this before? Who else refuses to hold rapists responsible for their own actions, choosing instead to restrict the behavior of those they consider the catalysts?
Offred learns to accept reality and maintain her sanity, but Atwood comments on the perils of doing so. In some ways, this story tells not of a far-off future, but a tale already heard before, the tale of the modern world.
...entioned forms of Offred’s power were not physical power. She also has the most physical power as she is the person who carries the baby and gets pregnant. Then later in the novel after Serena suggests about seeing Nick. Offred is given a cigarette and then a match and with that match Offred could burn the house down killing the Commander and Serena and then trying to escape. She could burn herself so that she no longer has to live or suffer the indignity of being continually raped by this society.
Offred and everyone else is taken from their old lives and forced into a new life where they lost their loved ones and are isolated from everything they enjoyed and took for granted in their old lives. Offred, over everything else had the hardest time coping with the isolation from her daughter. Offred said “I want her back, I want it all back, the way it was” (Atwood 122). This quote is showing the pain and how desperately Offred wanted to be back in the life she had in before and to have her daughter with her, it shows how she is isolated from her daughter due to the subjugation and it proves how detrimental it was for her. Offred similarly to Smart and Chiyo had to deal with isolation that came with the subjugation and they had a very difficult time with it as it was very detrimental to all of
Throughout the majority of the novel, Offred recounts on her mother’s character, whom she thinks is dead. She was a single mother and a proud feminist. In the first quarter, Offred recounts on a flashback of her mother burning porn magazines, claiming that they are degrading to women. However, towards the end of the novel, Offred learns that she is in fact alive, yet is living in the Colonies. Moira had seen her in a video about women living the Colonies, which is completely contrasted from the beginning, when Offred viewed her mother in a documentary protesting. This shows how Gilead has significantly changed her as a person. Living in the Colonies is just as bad as death because although she is alive she is required to do menial and even dangerous labour like cleaning radioactive waste. Earlier in the book, during Offred’s flashbacks, her mother was always a strong female character. She was always speaking and acting on behalf of women’s rights, yet now she has not fulfilled these expectations. She has been subjugated and indifferent like the rest of the women, not at all optimistic and energetic like she was in her previous life. Confession as used in the novel as a way of psychological release from guilt and blame through rationalization. Offred frequently reprimands herself for trying to maintain her humanity and to cherish her morals and beliefs in a social environment that crushes dissent or the way of expressing opinion that are at variance with the previously expressed. During some of the night scenes throughout the novel Offred gas through shatterproof glass into the night sky in an effort to shore up her flagging soul, her debates with herself reflect the thin edge that separates her endurance from the crazed panic. Hell, by the end she had gone through so much that the likelihood total mental, spiritual, and familial reclamation was slim to non. The most she could hope for was like a physical escape from the terrors and the healing inherent in telling her story to future
In Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale, social turmoil after a staged terrorist attack has led to a totalitarian Christian regime. In this dystopian future, the roles of men and women are much different than in today’s society. The novel, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood connects to the novel, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne through many similar, recurring themes. Both novels are described as works of dystopian fiction and they both manifest traits of Sin and Redemption with Good and Evil. One of the central themes that relate to both texts is Identity. Within both of the novels, both women protagonists struggle to successfully assert their identity, and they struggle to create genuine relationships with others.
