Recommended: The notion of trinity

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Christianity is, “The religion derived from Jesus Christ, based on the Bible as sacred scripture, and professed by Eastern, Roman Catholic, and Protestant bodies.” This definition is true; however, this definition is also extremely vague. The Christian faith believes that there is one triune God, the Trinity. The trinity consists of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. This belief in the Trinity is rooted in scripture and professed in the Nicene Creed a statement on the basic beliefs of Christianity (Nicene Creed). After God created mankind, humanity eventually fell into sin and rebellion against God. Mankind is totally depraved and tainted with original sin, Romans 3:23 puts it clearly: “All have sinned and fall short …show more content…

The only way to escape the righteous judgment of God through true faith in Jesus Christ, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (New International Version, John 3:16). Believing in Jesus Christ is the only way to be made right with God and this was accomplished through Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection. One someone has accepted Christ as their lord and savior, they must live as new creation. They must put aside their old ways and live redeemed. This is described as, “Because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, is also restoring us by his Spirit into his image, so that with our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us” (117). This clears up a lot of the confusion about why Christians do good works. They do not do them to earn their way into heaven, rather they are out of gratitude for being saved.     Chapter four addresses the divisions within the Corinthian church, such as jealousy, quarrelling and their defective view of the church. The apostle Paul links their view of the church to church leadership stating “If they had a true view of the church, they would have a true view of the leaders of the church” (p79). The situation was that their view was lower for the church and higher for the leaders thus they were boasting about the leaders. Paul’s view was that the Corinthian church was spoon feed Christians not maturing as they should. Paul’s reference to addressing the church as worldly did not mean they were unregenerate because they did possess the Spirit but they were not being spiritual, not being controlled by the Holy Spirit. He goes on to say “They have experienced new birth by the Spirit but have remained babies in Christ; they have not yet become mature in Christ” (p80) The Apostle most likely would express the same opinion about many Church congregations today. Many churches are elated with their church growth, but it is often superficial. If the church does not offer a real growth opportunity the journey is short lived. The church fills up with Christians not participating in the sanctification process. As with many churches today the Corinthians had a self-serving attitude about themselves and their church. The Corinthians would have never behaved the way they did if they had a higher view of the church and what it stood for and a lesser view of the leaders. Christianity was started when Jesus of Nazareth began walking the earth teaching the people. He was believed to be the son of God and had twelve disciples that followed him wherever he went. His teachings were from the bible and the religious leaders of the time thought him to be a heretic. He often spoke of how the Pharisees were misconstruing their power and were teaching fallacies among the people. Jesus was then caught by Romans after being caught preforming a miracle or "working" on the Sabbath. He was sentenced to death by crucifixion and was killed and buried soon after. Three days passed before he rose up and out of his grave and went back to his disciples. He then gave the disciples their mission and ascended into heaven. Christians believe that through his death and resurrection Jesus defeated death and therefore was the ultimate sacrifice to forgive all sins past, present, and future.
