It was the year of 1971, music blared and neon lights zipped across the stadium as the announcers began to introduce the football teams to their fans. Palpable excitement buzzed through the charged air as the crowd erupted into a mighty cheer. The Titans then stepped out onto the field, performing their usual wacky cheer and singing along the way. A few minutes later the game began, and the Titans were relentless. That was the semifinal game of the 1971 football playoff season, where somehow the Virginia Titans managed to clinch an undefeated season, despite being faced with numerous challenges along the way. However, every story has to begin somewhere, and in this case, it all began when T.C Williams High School was forced by the American government to integrate it’s black and white population together. Tensions were high, and they certainly …show more content…
didn’t alleviate when a white store manager murdered a young black teenager. As a result, the black and white population protested against one another, ambitious to tear one another to shreds if it weren't for masses of policemen separating their disputes. Indubitably, this also carried over to the schools prospering football team, and many players were concerned they wouldn't be able to clinch a spot. The team's coach Bill Yoast also seemed to be concerned, however he remained at a calmer state, reassuring his team that if they played like they always, they would be just fine. Foremost, carrying off from what I stated earlier, tensions were rising as T.C Williams High School merged into one big racial-slum. It seemed as if everyone was against each other, and the brave ones who attempted to approach the opposite race were classified as monsters. Although the school had become interracial, it was still exponentially conflicted, and so the government was forced to make order. By virtue of this, they relieved Bill Yoast of his position and offered a position as Head Coach to Herman Boone - a revered black coach located in the state of North Carolina, USA. Boone kindly accepted their offer and moved over, additionally oblating Bill Yoast another job as Defensive Coach. Bill Yoast abruptly approved, and the two immediately started making their team. However, their tryouts were far from normal, and they sanctioned that anyone was able to make the team, assuming they were capable of enduring a two-week long team camp. This is where our adventure begins, and where we officially meet all of our main and supporting characters. At first, the football team still separated apart from each other, up until the point where Boone took them on a 3 am run. Jogging for miles, the team finally arrived at their destination gasping for air as their Coach informed them of the history of the place. He stated they were standing at the battle of Gettysburg, and just how many lives were lost over such a short-sighted dispute. As he told them the story, the two races finally understood how stupid it was to be against each other, and the hardships that they had faced based off of a mere detail. By virtue of this, at practice, they finally began to accept one another and became united as one. They promised they would never be against each other again, and so the team chose two captains - one from each race. The white captain selected was Gary Bertier, the black Julius Campbell. It just so happened that the two had become best friends, and so their charisma was unbeatable. Lead by this young men, along with the strict coaching of Herman Boone, the prospering Titans reached the place I have described to you today. As I have already stated, the compatibility and diversity of the Titans lead them to a squandering undefeated season, all the way up to this scene today. They were completely prepared to conquer the opposing team, but were unsure if they could pull through. This was due to a catastrophic event a few nights before, where Gary Bertier became paralyzed waist-down due to a fatal car-crash. It was a difficult situation for the team, as they had just seen their leader, role-model, and friend’s career be destroyed in the blink of an eye. Times were rough, and it showed through their game. To say the least, it was a catastrophic night.
The Titans were down by a large number and had no motivation to win. At halftime, they simply slumped back into the changeroom and began to turn against each other once more. Arguments began to arise, who wasn't playing defense, who was dropping the pass, but Julius sat silent. It was only when it began to get physical that he ordered them to stand down. Soon after, he began to deliver one of the most inspiring speeches to this day, stating that they could win this game. It didn't matter if they Gary, Boone, or even him. It mattered that they had a team and that they used it. By virtue of this, blood started to pump through the Titans veins. They began to do their exalted cheer, and the crowd went wild. The game suddenly tilted in the Titans favor, and they merely had enough time to pull of one last play. The team ran a double reverse, and their running back sprinted over the goal line. The crowd erupted into a colossal cheer, and the Titans permanently marked their place in American history, creating a small ripple in what would become a wave of freedom for blacks once
more. Ultimately, Remember The Titans has a certain way of relating to all people no matter what race or color they are. Personally, I remember when I first saw this masterful piece of art like it was yesterday, as it affected my point of view on our modern day society very deeply. It informed my young self that we can’t simply judge a person by the color of their skin, but rather their personality and heart. Moreover, it was a movie that inspired many to make better, to build new roads, and to realize that there is more to someone than meets the eye. And still, people say that it can't work, black and white, but it’s shown throughout this movie every time. We may have our differences, of course, but before we reach for hate, we should always, always, remember the Titans.
Coach Yoast’ realizes that his team is being set up to fail by the Betrayal of the governing body which plots with the officials of the game to take points away from the Titans to prevent them from winning the game which would reflect badly on Coach Boone so that he will lose his job. Coach Yoast does not go along with their plot which costs him his Hall of Fame designation.
Remember the Titans was a film based on the 1970s, a time of racial segregation. The Gettysburg Speech, given by Coach Boone, is an attempt to persuade his players to integrate regardless their racial differences. He brings the team to Gettysburg to deliver his speech, hoping to emphasize the point he is trying to make. Coach Boone explains that they too will be destroyed like the men of Gettysburg if they do not end this feud. Coach Boone was able to successfully unify his team despite their racial differences by effectively utilizing imagery, alliteration, and pausing throughout his speech.
Remember the Titans is a movie about a high school football team that is diligently trying to win a state championship. The main obstacle that is in the way of them working together and getting the state championship is the fact that their team has both black and white male players. Today, it would be common for us to play with interracial people but in the year nineteen seventy-one it was not common at all. It was decided that Coach Boone (an African American), would be the head coach for the new football team at T.C. Williams High School. Coach Boone asks Coach Yoast, the former coach, to stay and be his assistant coach. He agrees and the white players also join the team along with the blacks. The team goes to Gettysburg College for camp where none of the teammates are comfortable with each other. Eventually, the team finally gets along at the camp and color is no longer an issue with the teammates.
The movie "Remember the Titans" is a character education filled film for all ages. To summarize, this movie takes place in the year nineteen seventy-one and follows the issue of racism. Two high schools in the town of Alexandria, Virginia are being integrated into an African American and Caucasian school, and that mix includes the football team. The movie follows the story of their development. At first, the two races sit, talk, and practice separate. After one practice camp, and one passionate coach, the boys learn to respect and become friendly with each other. However, after the two week practice camp is up and they go back to school, the rest of the high school does not understand why the football players have changed. However, the football
Discrimination has been present in many forms throughout history. The hate filled acts have been performed many times throughout the years, but was seen as socially unacceptable during and after the Civil Rights Movement. Remember the Titans takes place during the Civil Rights Movement, and showed how equality between races was still being fought for in the community. Remember the Titans showed how football created unity between the white and black community, but also showed the issues the black community faced. Remember the Titans depicts many forms of hate filled discrimination because it showed physical violence, social outcasting, and protesting on the belief one race was superior to another.
Walter Winchell once said, “Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you.” The movie Remember The Titans gives truth to this quote. Produced in 2000, this movie stars actors such as Denzel Washington, Will Patton and Wood Harris. One may think that this movie is just about football but its depth is so much more. Taking place in Alexandria, Virginia, race mixing is unheard of until 1971 when T.C. Williams High School is established. When the schools are integrated a new football coach is brought in and the community and students are not happy about it, as the new coach is an African American. This movie shows how people overcome adversity and unite as one to achieve a common goal.
Disney's Remember the Titans (2000) depicts the first season Herman Boone serves as head football coach of the T.C. Williams Titans in Alexandra, Virginia. The beginning of the movie shows how Bill Yoast, a Hall of Fame caliber coach, becomes the assistant coach to Herman Boone when Virginia public schools integrate in the early 1970's. Upon the temporary resolution to those coaching conflicts, the racially divided players and coaches go to football camp and learn how to become a team. In those scenes, Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell emerge as leaders for the white and black team members respectively. Despite fighting each other and appearing to become enemies at first, they are able to put their differences aside and come to realize a common ground on which to build a close friendship. For the most part, the team itself is able to follow their example.
Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Coach Herman Boone, who tries to integrate a racially divided team. Throughout training camp and the season, Boone and Yoast 's black and white players learn to accept each other, to work together, and that football knows no race. As they learn from each other, Boone and Yoast also learn from them and in turn, the whole town learns from the team, the Titans. Thus, they are prepared to pursue the State Championship and to deal with and some adversity that threatens to effect their season.
In 1971, in Alexandria Virginia, African- Americans and whites were forced to integrate and become one at T.C. Williams High School. Them being forced to become one caused racial tension among the community. Based on a true story, the movie centers around the Titans football team, who is led by Coach Boone an African- American. But the movie is about more than just football, it’s about learning to trust and accept one another as equals. The literary devices I’ll be using throughout the essay is, small town dynamics, characterization, the sound and lighting throughout the movie and the setting of where the events are taking place and how racism is a big factor. The movie explores numerous forms of racial prejudice and discrimination that I
In 1971 two schools in Alexandria integrated to form T.C. Williams High School. Head coach Bill Yoast is replaced by African American coach Boone which causes tensions to rise. Tensions also start rising when the two schools of different races are forced to work together as one football team. Most of the players start to get used to their team during their two week training camp in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. But when the players return to Alexandria they revert back to how they were before the training camp. During the season the team's winning streak caused the people of Alexandria to start accepting people of different races. But the team was still separated
Of the many truly inspirational speeches given by African Americans, Booker T. Washington’s The Atlanta Exposition Address is one of the few that intends to achieve compromise. In his speech, Washington is trying to persuade an audience composed significantly of white men to support African Americans by granting them jobs and presenting them with opportunities. His goal is to convince his white audience that African Americans will be supplied with jobs lower than those of white men, allowing white men always to be on top. Booker T. Washington’s The Atlanta Exposition Address adopts a tone of acquiescence and compromise to persuade a predominantly white audience to accept his terms.
... relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It displays a team that puts a dent into a major problem in the United States at that time. Through leadership they were able to break through a common thought, and as I have said before it really is inspiring to watch. As Coach Boone said, “Make sure they always remember the night they played the Titans” (Moviequotes.com)”
It is clear to us that Boone did in fact face a challenge that he overcame. He wanted to be accepted by the community by proving that he was a valued member of it, a valuable football coach. In order to do this he had to prove that he could coach The Titans through all of their games, this required team unity. He gained the respect and acceptance of the football players in order to encourage their unity. He knew that only through their unity could they succeed. It is not the mere challenge that Boone faced that gained merit; it was what he succeeded in doing that was the real important achievement, succeeding to prove to the community that they could indeed be united.
The Titans were flawless, in the sense that they were greater than the gods. They could not be killed, and thus they were invincible. Their universe was ruled with absolute power. The football team of T.C. Williams High School were the Titans of Alexandra, Virginia. Their football field was their universe and with such power, they controlled the field with merciless victory. This did not mean that the players were perfect, rather that together, unified perfection was achieved. In the film Remember the Titans, many social issues became points of focus, with racism predominantly being mentioned above all else.
