Everywhere you go, teens seem to be glued to their phones, tablets, or computers. Technology is an addiction that does not seem to be going away any time soon. According to the Washington Post, teens can spend up to seven or more hours on their digital devices a day and the usage is still increasing. Not surprisingly enough, more than a third of all teenagers own a cellphone, ranging from a smart phone or just a plain old-school flip phone. But can spending all that time on their computers and smart devices be such a bad thing? Today’s easy access, always on world presents a wealth of opportunity for teens as students, but also challenges them to retain them essential humanity and unique personalities.
The internet is home to all the known knowledge throughout the world. With an estimated 634 million websites available (Royals) everything simply seems to be found by typing in the desired information in any popular search engines available and an answer will immediately pop up. As stated on Google, on average per day, a billion different items are searched on their search engine alone. With that type of search power, teenagers all over can be opened up to a new range of information that are sparking many controversies of its use in education.
Education boards and schools all over the country are now developing ways in which technology is used for educational purposes. Schools all over are beginning new ways of keeping up with this fast paced world by implementing iPads and SMART boards. As new technologies are placed, teachers are beginning to realize a trend of increased educational performance. This new wave of technology usage in schools gives hope to the American public of improved national education.

There’s no telling how drastically technology will change us as humans. The world is an ever-changing place with new gizmos and high-tech equipment being produced every day. How will the future youth handle the tech expansions? It’s a question that almost no one can be quite sure of. We hope that this new technology will be used wisely without being abused.

Twenge’s article maintains the argument that, while many people have different ideas about the cause for the change in teen attitudes in recent years, she believes that smartphones are greatly to blame. The 21st century teens take all of the resources available at our fingertips for granted. We get upset when an app or a song takes too long to load because that is all we have ever known. A comedian, Louis C. K., uses an example of airplanes to further explain how much we take for granted. We complain about the plane not boarding, in what we think, is a timely fashion and having to sit on board waiting for takeoff when we should be thankful that we are sitting in a chair, with WiFi, in the sky, above the clouds. As a fellow teen, in my daily life, I use technology constantly. Either in school or outside of school. I feel teens rely on today’s technology to heavily that it may be having harmful affects on teens. The youth of today are constantly engaged in technological advancements. technology promote nonstop communication and instant gratification. whether through cell phones, gaming systems, laptops, or i pods. are these technological advancements a good thing? The growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth because it isolates individuals from reality, hinders communication, and effects the teens learning ability.
Teens may be technologically savvy, important in a culture reliant on technology, but have fewer skills in dealing with real people. The economic divide pushes those without financial means further from those with internet access and the latest gadgets. How did we survive as teenagers without cell phones and texting? Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system.
