This is a response to the video The Thousand and One Nights. The Thousand and One Nights is a book of stories. One of the main characters in the story was Scheherazade. Scheherazade is queen, storyteller, the wife of Shahryar, and the daughter of Vizier. The premise of the story is when faced with a challenge, for things to change sometimes someone has to step up and do something different.
The Thousand and One Nights been adapted in recent times. An example of this is Martin Luther King. During a time of injustice and violence, Martin Luther King a leader, activist, and humanitarian took it upon himself to address the problems of the world (racism). Martin Luther King goal was to protect the people and to eliminate the violence; as
a result creating change.
Elie and Liesel live and survive during the time of World War II. Both characters face the harsh reality of the terrible period of time they are living in. The memoir, Night and the movie, “The Book Thief” share similarities and dissimilarities that make Elie and Liesel both stand out. Due to the loss of family, determination to live, and fear helps both of them survive the war, but depends on the different reactions, mistreated for different reasons, and hope.

The book explains how it felt to be in a concentration camp, and how it changed a person so much you couldn’t tell the difference between the dead and the living. Elie Wiesel is the author and he was only around 15 when this story happened, so this is his story and how the events in the story changed him. So in the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character , Elie, is affected by the events in the book such as losing faith, becoming immune to death, and emotionally changing throughout the course of the book.
The novel Night demonstrates that the human spirit can be affected by the power of false hope, by religion, and that one will do whatever it will take to survive for oneself and family.
Night by Elie Wiesel is a novelization of the struggles that were faced during the Holocaust. This novel is written to teach one that it is important to take action when injustice is seen. Wiesel uses first person point of view, imagery, and symbolism to display the ways one can be able to stand for what they believe in. He tells the reader how one impact the society they live in and that if no one takes action against injustice for the better then nothing will improve and society will not change. Wiesel says, “I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminal’s flesh. Had I changed that much? So fast? Remorse began to gnaw at me. All I could think was: I shall never forgive them for this” (Wiesel 39). He depicts that it should be difficult for humans to tolerate any injustice that they see. Shahrazad is seen as a heroic figure throughout the Nights because she comes up with a well thought out plan to stop King Shahrayar’s killing spree and spare the lives of the women who would eventually fall into the king’s trap. Shahrazad was very intelligent, she knew what was happening to the women who married the king then disappeared the day after and wanted to put a stop to it. She told her father that she wanted to marry the king so that she could “either succeed in saving the people or perish and die like the rest” (1182). She was not very sure if her plan would work but she would even die trying to save the lives of her people. To complete her mission she would tell a story, more exciting than the first, to King Shahrayar every night to keep him entertained so that he would not just spare her life, but the lives of others as well.
Elie is the main dynamic character throughout Night, leaving the story deeply changed by his horrendous experiences. As an author, Elie Wiesel refuses to let people forget about the Holocaust. His ultimate “dark time” caused his eyes to see one final truth: no matter how much agony it may entail, he must share his story with the world. Otherwise, history might repeat itself. It is safe to say that Elie Wiesel has surpassed his goal.

Whenever a female character is introduced, however, the assumption is that she will be a strong lead that challenges the patriarchal values. The authors of The Thousand and One Nights and Medea use their female centered stories to prove their contrasting beliefs on the role of women not only in literature, but also in society. A story with a female main character can be seen as empowering, but this is not always the case, as seen when comparing and contrasting Medea and The Thousand and One Nights.

By knowing all this, Shahrazad is able to come up with a brilliant plan and uses it in a cunning way so that she is able to convince the king to cease killing the women. By use of sexual advancements, sly stories, and the help of her sister, Dinarzad, she is able to successfully follow through with her plan. A main factor driving her is her compassion and drive to help other people in need. The Thousand and One Nights is an intriguing story that will keep readers on their toes, and like King Shahrayar, keep coming back for the rest of the story.
After reading the directions and topic for this paper, I was extremely eager to get started. Adolescence is a stage of life that is very critical for a person. Speaking from my own experience, I know that the teenage years are a difficult part of life and during these years, one experiences a rollercoaster of different emotions, obstacles, and decision-making. The Thousand and One Nights is a collection of stories within a story that introduces us to King Shahrayar. In a quick summary, King Shahrayar is originally considered to be a good king, but after his wife starts to involve herself in adulterous behavior, he executes her and vows to himself that he will never be deceived by women as long as he shall live. King Shahrayar does this by marrying a different virgin every night, only to have her killed that next morning. During this time, the kingdom is filled with dead women whom have been victims of King Shahrayar and their morning parents. It is only until the king’s loyal vizier’s (assistant to the king) daughter, Shahrazad, volunteers to marry the king in attempt to teach him a couple lessons.

The opening story in the collection is "King Schahriar and his Brother", and it is a story about how the king of the Persian Empire turned to cruelty and violence after finding out his lover had committed adultery. Despite the king being the main character, we have an array of different, interesting characters such as the Grand Vizier, and his daughter, Scheherazade, who is the "hero" of the story.
