It all began when someone left the window open. David Chen has only owned his house for one week. It was a tall dark house. David didn’t question why the price was so low. The house was tall and green. The nearest house was almost 12 miles away. David Chen is a pretty strong guy. But David is short too. Freddy didn’t want to disagree with David so he went along with the decision of buying the house. David and Fred were drinking tea as they saw the bird fly by. “Would you look at that? That bird flew right out of the house,” Fred exclaimed. “The window is open up there. I’ll go close it,” David responded. Once David shut the window he looked at wall. There were birds painted on it. However, David noticed a bird had gone missing from the wall. His pants suddenly grew heavy. In David’s mind he heard a voice saying “Must be pretty ironic how that bird flew out of here.” David shrugged it off and went to drink tea with Fred. That night, when Fred was in bed he heard a bird. “David! Wake up I’m scared,” Fred whimpered. David looked at Fred and shook his head. “How did I end up with him?” David thought. In the morning Fred woke up David by yelling, “CLEANING DAY!” David said he’d clean the first and second floor. Fred had to clean the third-floor bedroom. When David was halfway done through the first floor he heard Fred scream. David could hear a similar sound to nails scratching a chalkboard. David rushed up the long dark stairs. As soon as David got into the room all the noise had stopped. Fred was on the ground, andthere was blood smeared over his shirt. David slung Fred’s arm over his shoulder and helped him out of the room. David suddenly stopped. On the wall, one of the birds was coming off and was flying. It was unbelievable the ... ... middle of paper ... ...d David and swooped down directly at him. The birds gnawed at his shirt and chewed bits of his flesh until David could speak no more. The birds took David’s body back to Brundan. Brundan ripped the skeleton out of David’s body. “Well, I’m going to eat this in the hole. Minions! Go hide on the wall!” Two months had passed since David Chen and his friend Fred had been murdered by Brundan. No one knew about David Chen and Fred’s disappearances. Brundan was hiding in the woods waiting for his next victim. The next day a man approached the house with another man in a suit. Brundan listened to what they spoke about. “It’s a done deal sir! The house is yours,” the man in the suit said. “Great! But the name is Kevin,Kevin Box,” the other man replied. A mischievous smile grew on Brundan’s face. Brundan turned to a crow next to him and whispered, “Tell them we have a visitor."
When she was gone, he lay for some time staring at the water stains on the gray walls. Descending from the top moulding, long icicle shapes had been etched by leaks and, directly over his bed on the ceiling, another leak had made a fierce bird with spread wings. It had an icicle crosswise in its beak and there were smaller icicles depending from its wings and tail. It had been there since his childhood and had always irritated him and sometimes had frightened him. He had often had the illusion that it was in motion about to descend mysteriously and set the icicle on his head. He closed his eyes and thought: I won't have to look at it for many more days. And presently he went to sleep. (93)

The story “A Brutal Murder in a Public Place” by Joyce Carol Oates follows a person in an airport who hears a small bird but cannot seem to find it. Oates uses imagery and symbolism between the narrator and the bird to show how trapped and overlooked the narrator truly feels.
Thesis: Glaspell utilized the image of a bird to juxtapose/compare/contrast the death of Mrs. Wright’s canary to the death of Mrs. Wright’s soul.

The darkness of her bedroom crept into her body. As time progressed the sounds of the evening grew louder leaving her in a state of fear. Amongst the dark room she would see the shadow of someone standing outside her bedroom window. She didn’t know why someone would want to hurt her. Afraid to tell her parents she found refuge underneath the sheets of her bed. After several sleepless nights she spoke to her mother about the mysterious person outside her window. Her mother shrugged it off and told her that no one was there and not to worry. Her mother believed that this was either her imagination or eating too close to her bedtime. However, Elyn was determined to catch this mysterious man. Next, she enlisted the help of her brother Warren. Frightened they hid in the closet waiting to capture the bandit. Unfortunately, this heroic attempt was unsuccessful as the bandit never revealed himself to anyone but her. Soon it became apparent to everyone that no one was outside her window. But, these feelings of a watchful eye never fled her. As a result, Elyn spent many nights terrified underneath her sheets only falling a sleeping from
Thomas lived with his family in a two story house in Windy Hill. He had a little brother names Frankie and a dog named Max. One autumn morning, Thomas jumped out of bed and stared out the window at the quiet cobblestone streets below. Leaves the colors of a brilliant sunset glided and danced along the streets edge, playing a rustling tune. Thomas smiled, he couldn’t wait to see the vending trucks pulling up outside, and the town folks hurrying about as they prepared the streets for the Festival Of Ghouls.
I was most impressed by David’s strength, determination and bravery to outlast his mother’s beatings throughout the book. For instance, when his mother tried to burn him on the stove, Dave was determined not to let her do this to him. What he decided to do to try and stop her was to keep her
All he can think about is his wife sleeping with other men and does not even consider that she was just merely mentioning people she considered acquaintances. The cage is described as a “large black wrought-iron cage”, creating the picture that the cage is like a jail. The one time the parrot cage door was left open, the husband tries to fly out but he runs into something and a pain flares in his head. The location of the cage also drives the husband/parrot crazy. The cage is placed so that the husband/parrot can only slightly see into the bedroom but he can’t completely see what his wife is doing. This is a representation of how when the husband was alive, he could not see what his wife was up to even though he had a good idea of what she was probably doing. The husband states that he learned a lesson the one time he tried to fly out. The lesson he learned was his wife’s pain and tears. She wept and her tears touched her husband. Throughout the story the husband learns more about his wife as a parrot than when he was actually alive as her husband. By having a different perspective, people learn to see and learn more. The wife does not realize that her husband is trapped in a parrot’s body, allowing herself to open up in front of him. Through this perspective, the husband learns more than he ever did by trying to spy on his
“What is that?” Jan asked. Her daughter came flying through the house with something tiny in her hand. The daughter ignored Jan who was sitting at the kitchen table and beelined straight to her husband. “We have to go to the store!” the daughter demanded. While as small argument ensued between her husband and her daughter, Jan strained to see the small object in her daughter’s hand. She was quickly able to determine what it was and let out a shriek of terror. “GET IT OUT!” Jan demanded. “But mom” said the daughter. “NO BUTS!” Jan sharply replied. In her daughters’ hand was a little bird with no feathers.
Time slowed. Men surrounded our bed and glared down at us. There was a collective breath. Then they reached for us. I tried to fight, but it only loosened my hold on Phibe, and she was ripped out of my arms like a doll from a child. My screams were probably heard all the way across the sea, in the old English town that I’d left for a better life. Phibe reached for me, her screams matching my own, but the man that held her snatched her arm back. There was a stomach-churning crack. Phibe screamed until her voice
The place where I feel the most comfortable, and show my personality, is my bedroom. This is the place where I can really be myself and do what I want; it’s the place I come home to, and wake up every day. My room makes me feel comfortable because it is my own space. My house is always crazy, with my dog barking, and my siblings running around making noise, my room is the only place in the house where I can come and relax without caring about everything else, the only place that I can go to clear my mind.
