The questions i'm trying to answer is how does ancient culture continues to shape the modern world. My claim i'm trying to state is being GREEDY is bad because it causes very bad consequences.GREED causes bad consequences by you taking something that isn't your's like the fox in "The Fox Swollen Fox", the fox ate a sandwich and didn't ask before taking the sandwich and eating it. The consequences that the fox had was he got stuck in the tree that the sandwich was in. Some fables a bad consequence can also affect just one character. Another example, is "The Swollen Fox", the fox was GREEDY in the story the fox saw a sandwich in a tree and didn't even ask anybody first before eating it and after the fox ate the sandwich the fox got stuck in the tree and couldn't get out of the tree because he was to fat because he ate the sandwich GREEDILY so when another fox passed by he told the fox stuck in the tree that he was foolish because he did not think before he acted to make that decision that's another consequence that another story has. It is clear that we still do need this lesson today because some people in the world take things before asking if they can use it or have the …show more content…
This lesson can still be used today in the modern world because you don't need to be jealous just because you don't get invited to a wedding or anything like my friend I didn't get to invited her to my birthday and she got jealous because I invited my other friends to my party but not
That’s why it is such a reoccurring theme in the Odyssey. For instance, on the island of Helios’s cattle, one of Odysseus’s starving men said, “better to open your lungs to the sea than to waste away to skin and bones.” Here, all of the men were starving and greed came over them. They killed and ate the cattle knowing that they would die later. This shows that the Greeks looked down upon greed and even thought that you could be killed if you were greedy. While still on their boats before entering the cyclops’s cave, Odysseus said, “let’s see what else this man has to offer.” Odysseus declined taking the cheese that was outside the cave and went inside to get more goods. This resulted in a huge portion of his crew dying. Yet again, the Greeks believed bad things would happen if you’re greedy. Back in Ithaca Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, bumped into a table and a suitor said, “Nudge my table will you, you nosing rat.” The suitor has been filled with thoughts of riches and has been eating free for months. Days later, Odysseus kills that man along with all of the other suitors proving that nearly every act of greed in the Odyssey is followed by death and despair. Now you have seen that the Greeks wanted nothing to do with greed, let’s go over all the archetypes that have been shown
Greed Economics: The uplifting or debilitating effect of the excessive desire of gain on the production, consumption and distribution of goods and services.
...and “shame”. Being able to develop this values will build a character strong enough to control your temper in hard, circumstantial situations, and what’s even more important, itll guide you through the correct path between choosing whats best vs. what’s the right thing to do.
The similar theme of justice throughout Inferno and King Lear both depict the eventual consequence of ones actions throughout their existence. Often causing more harm than good, the actions in which they preform tends to damage them more than the action itself. In William Shakespeare King Lear, King Lear decides to disown Cordelia, the youngest of three daughters from owning any part of his kingdom due to the fact that Lear wanted to see which daughter loved him more in which Cordelia replied, “Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave, My heart into my mouth: I love your majesty, According to my bond; nor more nor less.” (Shakespeare 9) Although C...
It is often said that money is the root of all evil. The Robber Barons of the late 19th century proved this theory without fail. They showed that greed can overtake morals if the conditions are right. It
The theme of this fable is a valuable lesson that teaches to not betray a person be with them why be their enemy when you can be their friend and things will not be so bad in other word. Do not betray people for something else or they will get there revenge sooner or
...Throughout the literary eras we can see stories containing anything evil from monsters to murderers to even ordinary men. However, no matter what type of evil these stories contain whether it is physical like the monsters in Beowulf, internal like the men in the Pardoner’s Tale or a combination of both like the witches and ambition in Macbeth, it is still greatly influential in the plot of the story and can only lead to the one end result of evil: death.
Throughout history it is known that fairy tales were written to teach children lessons about life in a way they could understand and that is fun and unique. Authors of fairy tales put simple lessons into the stories so the children could understand them easily while reading. Whether this be a lesson to be nice to all people, like in Cinderella, or to not judge someone by their appearance, like in Donkey Skin, both by Charles Perrault. Each fairytale has a moral that can be found throughout reading the stories that teach children right from wrong while letting them use their imaginations to discover that moral. The good and the bad lets them express their thoughts openly, rather it be their negative thoughts through the villian or their
In life and in fairytales there are always those that try to harm others or put them down, and fairytales teach children that those who do that do not succeed in the long run. The story of the Pied Piper is a perfect example of this. The people in the city of Hamelin refused to pay the Pied Piper even though they had promised. Because of this the Pied Piper led the children of the village away with his magical music (Young). As one can see this story shows how those that do wrong will be punished for their wrong and cruel acti...
Through the quote from Norma, Richard Matheson further proves the point that greedy behavior is a problem that does happen in society. Also, Norma represents people who are usually good, but are influenced easily by physical things, such as money.
The completely greed-based society is just but an orgy of sin. Extreme and radical changes must be made for one to be able to avoid evil. The human mind is very powerful and is able to distinguish what is good and bad. This is associated with the freedom to choose between what right and what is wrong. One can only control external if evil if he or she can defeat the evil within him or her. Confession is the best way to do away with the internal evil.
Since time immemorial, people have been trying to institutionalize moral values. love kindness, patience, contentment are just a few out of the plethora of positive traits. However, mankind being imperfect beings can never achieve perfection. Of all the vices that human possess, greed could be said to be the most influential. It is the distinct opposite of contentment and the very trait that has cause the fall of many countries. Perhaps most disturbing is that fact that greed has also torn apart countless families who would have otherwise been living in happiness. Indeed, one may say that greed is worthy to be one of the greatest sins. Yet there are those who proclaim that greed is necessary for mankind to evolve and rise above themselves. Such is the paradox of our time.
Greed, being a key human condition, has shaped society from the very start. In fact, some scholars believe that greed was the first major milestone of human success, when the first human wondered why he/she had to scrounge around for necessities; it is a part of being human to be greedy. Wanting a new car, to be loved by another, or to desire the feeling of well doing when feeding the needy, these are all factions of greed...
We all know there is right and wrong, and that we should focus on doing what is right. However, in many cases such as these two provided to us for this assignment, choosing good has some serious consequences. Unfortunately, life gives us difficult situations, and some cannot always avoid the negative outcomes or side effects that come with the positive action. As individuals, we should strive to avoid evil, and seek good. Although the situations had some negative consequences, in these cases, the good actions were taken according to the principle of double
Greed is so powerful in a person that it has the ability to destroy them, their friends, and family relationships. I have lived in the poorest country my first nine years, so when I was adopted, my mom gave me everything I ever wanted, everything I ever needed. However, using myself as an example, I was so mesmerized of the materialistic things that were available, that I stole. I took something that was not mine because I felt greedy. I felt like I needed that object for whatever reason. My mom tore my butt when I got home and I never thought of steeling because of my own selfish need of wanting. Not to mention how greed made me afraid. It made me afraid because I knew what I did was wrong. People are constantly being bombarded with images of things that we believe will make us happy and the selfish thoughts of greed makes us wanting more. For example, the iPhone 6 Plus came out September of 2015, now there is iPhone 7 which has new camera zoom, ear pods, and better quality. However, the week before it was released, everyone talked about wanting it because it’s the new “cool” thing. However, what people fail to understand is that the reason they want
