I will be going through one central theme in a non-fiction narrative called The Boys in the Boat, written by an American author Daniel James Brown. The five central themes of this narrative are perseverance, teamwork, hope, fidelity, and discipline. The central theme I will be talking about is perseverance. Throughout this entire book there are many points of perseverance, ranging from small levels of perseverance like just making it through the day, to high levels like winning the gold at the 1936 Olympics for rowing despite all the odds that were stacked against you. As previously mentioned, Boy's, Brown Displays an overwhelming amount of perseverance throughout the life of Joe Rantz, a boy born just a few months before the start of World …show more content…
War I. Rantz was born in Spokane Washington, to his mother and father. The amount of perseverance that Joe will go through in his life is nearly unbelievable. One might say that Joe either has the best or worst luck in the world. See at a very young age Joe lost his mother to lung cancer. Losing someone that close that early on in life is already hard, but on top of all this Joe’s father had a very guttural reaction to the passing of his wife. Joe’s father had packed his bags and set out across the American Canadian border, in the meantime Rantz was put on a train to live with his older brother Fred, and his wife. Through a lot of this time Joe had experienced a preathla of emotional roller coasters in his life but things would seem to get better, then worse, then better again. One of the biggest moments of perseverance in Joe’s life is when he was kicked out of his own home by his step-mother, Thula.
At only thirteen years of age, Joe was forced to go out on his own. Of course Joe wasn’t just out in the open all alone, he had a little guidance from his father before being sent out alone. Despite the terrible position Joe was put in he persevered. He chopped wood so that he had some sort of roof over his head, one that would provide a place to sleep. On top of that Joe helped out the local cookhouse, where he was repaid in food for his service. “...he trudged down the wagon road to the cook house” (36) This is a sort of milestone of perseverance for Joe, for this was the first big time he was set up to almost fail, just to still succeed. Another big point of perseverance in Joe’s life was when he was left behind again by his family in Sequim. During this time Joe was only fifteen years old, and had high school to attend to. So Joe was forced to yet again survive on his own, gathering money and going to school. The worst part about all this was the great depression. So Joe went through a great level of perseverance in surviving on his own, in high school, during the great depression. “... This unflagging resilience - this readiness to bounce back, to keep coming, to persist in the face of resistance…”
(139). The greatest thing that Joe persevered was the 1936 Olympic rowing competition. Not only the Olympic one though, every single one of the competitions before the Olympics. Joe, and the others in the boat had persevered through the several races before Poughkeepsie, the Poughkeepsie competition, and the Olympic preliminaries, all leading up to the finals. “It was neck and neck now… The three boats stormed towards the finish line” (350) In the final Olympic race the boys were set up against several other countries, arguably the toughest being Germany. They boys were also put in a starting position which would have them going directly against the wind. So while battling wind resistance for a good chunk of the race, the were still able to catch up to Germany and gain enough leverage to still end up winning the gold. This level of perseverance was so great that it can very well be called one of the most inspiring parts in the entire book. In conclusion, Boy’s, Brown has a lot of moments of perseverance, and the ones listed above are only a fraction of what this book shows off. What the boys had to go through was so brutally hard that it really is amazing. But the one who showed the most perseverance was easily Joe. Joe had such a difficult life leading up to the Olympics that it’s really amazing how he kept it all together. This book contains so many examples of perseverance that one could argue that is what the book was meant for, perseverance.
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
The Boys in the Boat gave me a little shock. Actually, I have had a little expectation to read an English book before, so I was so excited and worried. However, the book describes very elaborately, with lots of words I haven’t seen before, what the rowers did. I realized that there were lots of words I don’t know. Moreover, it was hard to memorize the descriptive words because those are too many. Nevertheless, by reading the book again and again, it is getting better, and even it is fun now. I like the feeling that I’m learning the vocabulary every day by just reading instead of memorizing. Anyway, I have learned a lot of words from the The Boys in the Boat, and I like the story in the The boys in the Boat. One of the elements that makes me
Every book has a theme, a main idea that is carried throughout the story, and most novels have more than one. Main ideas are threads that weave the story together. Ideas like friendship or love often are used to tell the story. Witness by Karen Hesse has an obvious theme of racism; however, love, hate, and sacrifice are woven into the plot with sacrifice being the most important.
In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.
Theme is the moral of the story. There can be 1 for an entire book or many in one book. Bravery helps people stand strong for what is right even when times are tough. is my thematic statement. Our scene is when Bod is on the big rock and the Jacks are telling him why they need to kill him and who they are. Bravery is the theme here because he shows that he will stand up ever when he is afraid. And when he is face to face with the people that want to kill him, he doesn’t run away. One of the Quotes that I believe shows bravery is , “‘you’ve not faded’ said liza ‘anyone could find you.’ ‘Good,’ said Bod. ‘I want them to find me’”. I believe this shows bravery because he is standing up to the jacks even though he might die. Another quote that
There were many themes illustrated throughout the memoir, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael beah. These themes include survival/resilience despite great suffering, the loss of innocence, the importance of family/heritage, the power of hope and dreams, the effects of injustice on the individual, and the importance of social and political responsibility. Every theme listed has a great meaning, and the author puts them in there for the readers to analyze and take with them when they finish reading the book.
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The story “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison displays a few specific themes through the story which are easy to depict. A few themes from this story are, first racism and finding his self identity, then the danger of fighting stereotype with stereotype, and last blindness. These themes play an important role in the story to better help the reader understand it.
“Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . . ” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,... ...
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
Another is plan ahead on your escape. There were only two obvious themes to this story. CharacterizationThere are two characters that should be put in characterization. The first one is Milma. She is the leader of the resistance in Dorado. She is in her early thirties.
After reading the story of “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” I realized that the theme, or moral of a story, is that all people need to be brave at some point in their life. I think the lesson was well portrayed because the story’s author, Rudyard Kipling, had been able to clearly show that the protagonist, Rikki-tikki, represented bravery, while the antagonist, Nagaina, represented fearfulness. Since Nagaina failed, I think that Kipling was trying to show that if you do not stand up for yourself you will fail. Of course, other people could have other themes as well, such as saying, “A team is like a hydra, if you cut off one head, two more grow back,” because of Rikki-tikki’s
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.

For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
