William Faulkner said, “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed.”. This is an example of the theme stand up for what is right, which is expressed in the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. In this book this theme stand up for what is right is very important. One example is when Stacey plans revenge on the school bus kids by getting the bus stuck in a ditch they made. Stacey says “I’ll show y’all how we’re gonna keep that but from splashing us” (Pg 50). This is proving the theme because the school bus kids didn’t do anything to them so why should they be splashing them and making fun of them. The Logan kids and T.J. did what they thought was right by
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
These examples of courage can help motivate people to stand up for their friends and family.
It takes courage to stand up for your convictions, especially if you know there will be consequences. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel by Mildred D. Taylor tells the story of a young girl named Cassie Logan. Cassie is a girl in 1933 who stands up for the rights of her family and friends. She proves her courage by standing up for her brother, Little Man, getting revenge on the bus full of white children, and standing up against Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie follows through with her convictions, knowing there may be consequences.
...o everyday use, such as Mama and Maggie have rightly done. Both of these short stories express the importance of standing up for what is right, regardless that one’s action may go unnoticed or that one may be faced with the difficult decision of choosing one daughter over the other. A person’s integrity and character develops every time a person stands up for what he or she believes in. Standing up for what is right is a good deed, and people should always stand firm for what is right because despite the possible losses, there is much more to be gained. .
In the novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie is forced to accept the racial segregation in Mississippi in the year 1933, and she learns the hard life of being an african american child in a country run by white americans. For example, when cassie was in Strawberry she accidentally bumps into Lillian Jean, a young, white girl, she is then forced to apologize to her, and if that was not enough Lillian jean also wants Cassie to get on the sidewalk, so she tries to grab cassie's arm, and she fails the attempt but Mr Simms “caught it from behind, painfully twisting it and shoved me off the sidewalk into the road[...] You ‘pologize to Miz Lillian jean” he says. In my opinion, this was just a terrible thing to do to a young
This household had very little to live on, but kept trying and trying and never gave up. In the story Papa may have worked all day twenty-four seven and was frequently gone for long periods of time, but he did it because he loved them and would do anything in order to survive. Papa’s actions motivate people to work hard to achieve a good life for their family. During this book you are also inspired to treat all people equally. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry expresses this by showing you what white people did to blacks and how the Blacks felt about being blamed for everything. This makes you want to treat all people equally because it makes you stop and think about how you would feel if you were in the shoes of the person being blamed most times when they did
Atticus Finch says, “The one thing that doesn 't abide by majority rule is a person 's conscience” (Lee 99). In other words, people make personal decisions about themselves independently of other’s opinions. In the same way, Martin Luther King Jr. pricks the conscience by addressing issues surrounding the civil rights movement. He urges Americans to reflect and decide for themselves what they believe is right and wrong. In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” King uses rhetorical devices to dramatically convey his arguments about the purpose of the government as well as the non segregational rights, moral responsibilities, and violent nature of the governed, ideas which are still relevant today.
This theme is the driving force behind the two films 12 Angry Men, written by Reginald Rose, and A Time to Kill, written by John Grisham. In 12 Angry Men, courage is represented mostly by Juror 8, who stood alone in a supposed open-and-shut case and defended his ideas with evidence and reason. Similarly, Jake Brigance from A Time to Kill accepted the challenge to defend Carl Lee Hailey, an African American man who murdered two white men who were going to court for raping his daughter. These are two prime examples as to how courage can be utilized to both express one’s opinion, but to help those in need.
Take a stand for your rights. The author is trying to explain that without the constant need for change, there will be no change. They’ll be stuck in an endless cycle of racism and oppression. In this day and age, social has become more racist and has profiled certain religions and racists deeming them murders, terrorist, and thugs, when in reality we are just humans trying to survive by any means necessary. “I wanna do something.”-”Protest, riot, I don’t care.”--”And neither did talking!””I did everything right and it still didn’t make a difference.I’ve gotten death threats, cops harassed my family, somebody shot into my house, all kinds of shit. And for what? Justice Khalil won’t get? They don’t give a fuck about us, so fine. I no longer give a fuck.” (389-390) Starr took a stand to fight back for justice. She had gone out and tried to create change after talking didn’t help her. These books need to be in the curriculum because it empowers people to take a stand and fight for
A deer in headlights is petrified of the vehicle coming toward it, Eckels realized this fear when a Tyrannosaurus rex stands but one hundred yards away from him in Ray Bradbury’s A Sound of Thunder. This short story was one of many of Bradbury’s successful tales, made popular by his vivid descriptive capabilities influencing the setting in his stories. In this story particularly he demonstrates his abilities of creating a great settings as he takes the reader on a journey back in time with three hunters, including the main character “Eckles”, accompanied by a guide to hunt a Tyrannosaurus rex. The purpose of setting is to let the reader know where and when the story is taking place and under what circumstances. Setting can be used to influence the story in many ways and often times will have a rippling effect on many other literary elements such as plot, character development, and theme. Bradbury emphasizes the setting of the story by use of figurative language and imagery; a close look at many of the details in A Sound of Thunder reveals how setting can be
“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake,” said Martin Luther King (“Never, never”). Many of us know Martin for his powerful words and his inspirational speeches. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s childhood and life experiences led him to become a student of non-violent activism, to receive numerous awards and honors, and to greatly impact our society.
In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor, Jeremy showed Stacey that not all white children are rude and blunt to black children and in return Stacey was actually showing Jeremy that it pays off to be nice. Even when Lillian Jean told Jeremy to stay away from Stacey that did not stop the friends from getting together. Even when Papa and T.J told Stacey that Jermey that did not stop him from anything. That proves that kindness will always win in the end.
In “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury, the protagonist, Eckels, makes a costly mistake which leads to a major consequence. By disregarding the instructions given to him while hunting a Tyrannosaurus rex through the use of a time machine, the planned trip to the past takes a considerable turn for the worse. In this essay, one of Bradbury’s most important tools, descriptive language, will be expanded upon. The concrete details and descriptive language that are used throughout the story are extremely important as they build other craft tools such as mood, but also allow readers to visualize and become part of the story. The descriptive language that is included throughout the story is highly relevant for all readers. It not only focuses the

We are taught not to back down, and to stand up for what we believe in, even if that's not what everyone else thinks. We are shown that we can't back down form the things that are important to us, while we shouldn’t sacrifice our lives for the majority of things, we should still stand up for them. And while we may not always agree with the consequences, or if we believed that our actions, don’t deserve consequences, there are times when you need to accept them, whether you like it or not.
