Disability is more than just a dictionary definition. Many types of disabilities are portrayed in “The House of D”, but only one character is truly disabled by definition. The incapacities of the characters are much more than a physical or mental condition that reduces the use of the body or mind. The disabilities are also very intertwined between each character, and Tommy is the center. Being in the center of the handicaps Tommy develops a noose around his neck, which will slowly tighten with time and the happening of events. Tommy’s noose is first tightened with the death of his father, and that is where Caroline or Mrs. Warshaw first develops her own handicap. Tommy’s mother’s handicap directly effects Tommy through his relationship with her. Her handicap is her inability to move forward after Mr. Warshaw’s death. He did not realize it, but he had spread himself far too thin. As Tommy wanted to grow his relationship with Melissa, he took away time from Pappas and Caroline. The night of the dance is the night Tommy felt choked and need to release himself. That night Pappas and Tommy’s mother felt replaced. Pappass realized that Tommy was growing up and in desperate effort to stop it Pappass stole a bike that the both wanted. As a result of Pappass’s actions Tommy’s responsibility for Pappass immediately returned. With Tommy getting expelled and Caroline’s over dose Tommy is being choked. By running to Paris Tommy only cuts the ties to the noose, but still being restricted by the knot he never got rid of. That knot is and always was tommy’s true disability. At the beginning of the novel Tom has just been paroled from prison serving time for killing a man in a fight. Tom feels he was merely defending himself. He feels no guilt or shame about killing the man and would do it again under the same conditions. Tom's morals allowed him to justify the killing. These morals were instilled in him by his family especially from the strength and love of his mother. Tom is looking forward to "laying one foot down in front of another." At this point in he story Tom has his physiological needs met and is going home to his family to meet his needs of safety and security love belonging.
The Moving Beyond Pity & Inspiration: Disability as a social Justice Issue by Eli Clare took place on April 16, 2014. Thinking about disability before this lecture I feel like I had a general idea of the things Eli spoke about. I attended a school were more than half of the students had a disability. The terms and stereotypes he mentioned I ha heard since sixth grade.
During the colonial era, Europeans viewed disability in a surprisingly similar way to the indigenous people they encountered upon first arriving in North America. Physical abnormalities such as limps or missing limbs were considered quite common, frequently occurring as a result of the labor necessary for survival. Most physical disabilities were ignored. People were viewed as disabled only if they were unable to perform labor, similar to how Native Americans viewed one to be disabled when they were unable to contribute something meaningful to the community. Disabled people were prohibited from attempting the voyage across the Atlantic, as they would have been unlikely to survive the journey. As more Europeans arrived and settlements began to grow, however, their willingness to accept and accommodate those they considered disabled increased significantly. Those who were unable to take care of themselves were often cared for by their families, and eventually looked after by the community in which they were born. Laws were drafted that were designed to protect those with mental or cognitive disabilities from legal repercussions should they be unable to understand the law or understand their actions. Disabilities can come in many forms and can cause many attributes of a person to shift or change over the course of time. Webster’s Dictionary defines disability as “a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities,” as well as, “a disadvantage of handicap, especially one imposed or recognized by the law.” In the short story by Flannery O’Connor, “Good Country People,” we can see described one such person. Joy-Hulga shows both mental and physical conditions of her disability, but also the bravery to overcome her disability. Flannery O’Connor does a fine job showing the readers the difficulties of living with and overcoming a disability.
In 1972, Geraldo Rivera with the help of Dr. Michael Wilkin of Staten Island's Willowbrook State School gained access to the institution and filmed the deplorable conditions the residents were living in. Now 25 years later the documentary reflects on four survivors of Staten Island's Willowbrook State School and their families. The family members give testimonials on how it felt to discover that their child had a disability, leave their loved ones in an institution, and the quality of care and services provided. The film also focuses on the progress made by the members that now live in group homes and the quality of their lives.
In Douglas Baynton’s Disability and the Justification of Inequality in America, he draws attention to the fact that, historically, people used disabilities as a justification for the discrimination of minority groups in America. He uses examples of certain societal groups who faced discrimination not simply because they were disabled, but because they did not pass for “normal.” Noting that being abnormal has been historically categorized as being disabled, he details how the mere “concept of disability had been used to justify discrimination against other groups by attributing disability to them” (Baynton 33). Utilizing historical references of such phenomenon within the social context of racism, sexism, and immigration status, Baynton emphasizes his point that if we are ever to better the way our society treats these groups we must first come forth with a much improved historical understanding of how disability was used to justify such discrimination. Spoken of defective individuals and defective races, “both were placed in hierarchies constructed on the basis of whether they were seen as ‘improvable’ or not capable of being educated, cured, or civilized. Whether it was individual atavism or a group’s lack of evolutionary development, the common element in all was the presence or attribution of disability” (Baynton 35). In other words, historically speaking, our society has chosen to categorize and label people using preconceived notions of disability to justify discrimination of persons due to their race, gender, or being that of a minority group.
The hardships of living with a disability are communicated using minor characters as props and how they are misconceived as being unintelligent or even abnormal. For example, a waitress suggests that Raymond is a “very clever boy”. Fascinatingly, she is the only minor character who treats Raymond with respect and sympathy, in contrast to Charlie and the general public who evidently takes advantage of his condition. In addition, the mise-en-scene composed of high key lighting and a wide-angle shot creates an ambient atmosphere, which makes it seem as if Raymond is unique, in contrast to abnormal or strange.(Cinematheque, 2010, p. 1). This conversation with the waitress shows that Ray’s disability makes him unique, in a positive way, especially because the general public seem to be uneducated about mental disabilities in this film; this is evidently shown where a man is seen screaming as Raymond, as he stands in the middle of a busy intersection. As a result, the director breaks down these misconceptions and generalisations about the, as if he is reprimanding that the disabled are a part of our society and that they should be treated with respect.

Disabilities. Many people don’t realize how lucky they are. They feel like they are hard done by and complain about all sorts of things, when they don’t realize the agonies that some people have to go through just to make it through the day. I will be comparing two different instances of disabilities. One from a book called The Miracle Worker, where a girl named Helen has had a disease that left her blind and deaf. And the other from the movie The piano, where the main character Sylvia, has been mute since she was 6 years old. I will talk about how the people around the one impaired were effected, how the person impaired was treated, and how they overcame their disability.

Disability: Any person who has a mental or physical deterioration that initially limits one or more major everyday life activities. Millions of people all over the world, are faced with discrimination, the con of being unprotected by the law, and are not able to participate in the human rights everyone is meant to have. For hundreds of years, humans with disabilities are constantly referred to as different, retarded, or weird. They have been stripped of their basic human rights; born free and are equal in dignity and rights, have the right to life, shall not be a victim of torture or cruelty, right to own property, free in opinion and expression, freedom of taking part in government, right in general education, and right of employment opportunities. People with disabilities are still people, they are people with hearts and they are actual physical beings; people with disabilities do their best to live every day to their fullest, yet that is still not enough for others. I feel like as a whole, humans are generally uncomfortable with people who have disabilities. Let’s think of it this way, people live their life every day in their normal lives and then they come across a person with a disability and suddenly their life is interrupted, like it is such a barrier in their flow of life to come across someone different from themselves.
