The story of Juliet and her Romeo is one that is commonly known throughout the world. The tale of their romance and even their tragic deaths have been a staple over the centuries in literature and even just society. A major theme among this play was the recurrent discussion of death and fate. From the start of the play, in the prologue, the audience knows the two lovers are destined to die. Fate appears in how Juliet chose to love the one person she was meant to hate showing how it was meant for them to be together. The idea that their names are what leads them to their deaths takes a major role in the play. Throughout William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the constant discussion of death and fate shows how Shakespeare tied in the ideals of Renaissance into his writing and how this drew the focus of the play towards …show more content…
Since “they actively decide to be the mortal instruments of their own destiny” (401) they are choosing their own fate. Further this allows the audience to see how they could have tried to fight their fight, yet instead they chose to succumb to their doom. In the Renaissance time period many people saw the view of death and focus on it to be a very paganistic view of death. Meaning that the view of death was thought of to go against the religion of the state, even if that said person was Catholic. Therefore, when Shakespeare incorporated these views into Romeo and Juliet he took on a paganistic side during his time period. However, it was said that, “These religious and philosophical notions of death also combine with death as the crucial, crowning element of tragedy as a literary genre” (401). This shows how while it was not commonly used in discussion the idea of death was critical to writing a tragedy. Overall this revolving theme of death throughout the play ties in the idea of death during the Renaissance and how it impacted the
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a story of two young lovers. These two hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet belong to feuding families. The family feud causes them to keep their love a secret and therefore only Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence know of their love. Romeo and Juliet are able to look past the feud and let themselves fall in mad love with the other. They let themselves do almost anything for the other and at times it seems like too much to do, even for the one they love. Although fate and character traits play a key role in the play, ultimately Rome and Juliet’s personal choices lead to their downfall.Fate originates all of the conflicts in Romeo and Juliet, from when they met until they die.
Inevitable Death in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet it is clear that fate plays a large part. There are many references in the play that refer to bad luck or misfortune, but it is argued that the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are equally the fault of human error. The characters each have weaknesses that could be to blame like anger, ambition or ill judgement. Also some characters had premonitions or bad feelings that something bad would happen but they never did anything to stop this.
There are many forces in the tragic play of Romeo and Juliet that are keeping the two young, passionate lovers apart, all emanating from one main reason. In this essay I will discuss these as well as how love, in the end, may have been the cause that led to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Their strong attraction to each other, which some call fate, determines where their forbidden love will take them.
Fate is the controlling force of the events that lead up to, and cause, the deaths of Rome and Juliet. It is no coincidence that Romeo meets the Capulet servant and is invited to the party. Fate brought him to the house of the Capel?s where he was destined to meet his future wife, Juliet. At the risk of being killed, the two lovers married their supposed loathéd enemy and consummated the marriage without even the slightest hint of detection from anyone who did not know of the wedding. Unfortunately, their sweet success would be short lived and their lives would be a downward spiral staring with Romeo?s banishment and ending with their deaths. Taking into consideration that Romeo and Juliet are predetermined to meet, love and die together, fate is clearly the dominant force of the play.
In efforts to overcome such hindrances to their love, Juliet feigns her death as planned. However, as a result of miscommunication, Romeo takes the news seriously, and thus, being propelled by zealous devotion, both use death as the key to unity. A variety of themes are implicated throughout the play. Fate, in particular, is well demonstrated. By using the motif of stars and characters such as Friar Lawrence, Juliet, and Romeo, Shakespeare truly and masterfully conveys that fate is the inevitable, unalterable and omnipotent force that controls all actions unto their consequences.
Juliet is also the only child. She is loved by her parents and is very
Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, depicts an ancient feud ended by a pair of star-crossed lovers’ deaths. A lord and lady from warring families seek a forbidden love with guidance from a friar and nurse. Due to a tragic course of mischances and fateful errors, their attempt of eloping led the lovers to a tragic end. Because of rash decisions, the four characters are torn apart by miscalculating events and misunderstandings. Ultimately, the four characters encounter a heartbreaking ending, as a result of their hastiness.
The death of the two lovers in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet seems preventable. Misinformed characters spur a series of unfortunate and ill-timed events that lead to Romeo and Juliet taking their own lives. The audience is constantly aware of Romeo and Juliet’s looming death and always hold knowledge that the characters do not. Shakespeare incorporates this dramatic irony in numerous places in the play which keeps the audience on edge and gives the same sense of fate that the characters experience

The subject of death is one of the most prominent elements found in both modern and traditional literatures, and it often plays a significant role in the development of the plot. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is no exception to this norm. In this play, a pair of star-crossed lovers finds themselves married despite an ancient family feud. As the play proceeds as a story of love, the reader quickly realizes through Shakespeare’s subtle usages of foreshadowing and dialogue that death is inevitable for the two young lovers. In a later film interpretation of the play, director Franco Zeffirelli also tries to capture the inevitability of Romeo and Juliet’s death by using sound.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tells the tragic story of two young star-crossed lovers whose fates are inevitable. This poetic play reaches a theatrical crescendo in Act 3 Scene 1, a pivotal turning point that leads to the ultimate tragedy of the play. This play incorporates plot, language devices and aesthetic features to explore themes on the forcefulness of love and the inevitability of fate. Shakespeare applies literary devices to portray the instinctive and strong attraction between Romeo and Juliet. Elements of aesthetic features are also included to further create a text that exquisitely expresses the heartbreak of forbidden love and devastating tragedy.

William Shakespeare’s most recognized play, Romeo and Juliet, has inspired and moved audiences for centuries. It is a story of two kids of opposing houses falling in love, only to be torn apart by destiny, and end up taking their own lives so they can truly be together. While the ending seems to be of the sick twists of fate, there seems to be a more austere underlying cause. Romeo and Juliet did not die at the hands of destiny, it was their foolish and immature decisions that led them to their tragic end.
