The theme of M.T. Anderson’s, Feed, is consumerism and its impact on a society or a group of people. Feed gives a glimpse of a future that hits a little too close to home. With almost everyone in the novel having what is called a “feed”, a device that directly connects consumers to all markets, consumerism is at an all time high. With just a thought, anything from any corner of the earth can be easily obtained. There are no boundaries when it comes to the “feed”, they stream commercials and advertisements constantly, always trying to sell. After the devastating loss of Violet, the girl without a feed that he fell for, Titus’s unflinching draw towards consumerism is highlighted, “I ordered the draft pants from Multitude. It was a real bargain.
I ordered another pair. I ordered pair after pair. I ordered them all in the same color. They were slate. I was ordering them as quickly as I could. I put in my address again and again...I ordered pants after pants. I put tracking orders on them. I tracked each one. I could feel them moving through the system. Spreading out for me, in the dead of night, I could feel credit deducted..I could feel them in orbit. I could feel them in circulation all around me like blood in my veins” (294). The entire novel was Titus changing, slowly and subtly, at the hands of Violet. As he and Violet got closer, Titus’s need to buy decreased as a result of Violets fighting of the system. However, all the work was undone following Violet’s death. This shows that despite the progress made within Titus and regardless of his newfound outlook on life, he cannot resist consumerism. The quote and the symbolic meaning behind it, accentuate the theme of consumerism and how it affects the consumers (aka Titus). If I were to rename the novel based on the theme I would name it “Consume” because of how quickly everyone in the novel eats up the aggressive advertising and marketing techniques being imposed on them.
Televistas is relatable to modern audiences as it depicts common love stories shown on television in present day portraying the same plot. Dawe raises awareness here, highlighting the influence of television and how we have changed consequently. Dawe’s argument is raised with “Fortunes smiled between commercials” detailing his revolt of televised advertisements. Coincidingly “dreams were swapped, and futures planned” suggests the powerful negative influence of television on our lives; encouraging the purchase of irrelevant materials. The use of big brand tags such as “Samboy” and “Cheezels” implements the idea of increased consumerism of fashionable items, due to televised advertising. In today’s world, technology and current norms drive a large portion of everyday life that the vocabulary becomes a common universal language. For example, if you don’t know or understand something, just “google” or ask “siri” about it, write a “blog” about a recent experience, or witnessed the latest “post” that has received over 1.6K “likes”. Since the feed is implanted into the brains of the population, there is an inability to escape the control of the feed. When describing the feed, Titus says ‘There 's nothing but the feed telling you, this is the music you heard. This is the music you missed. This is what is new. Listen.” In this description it is observed that the feed is constantly running, forcing you to enjoy an item or idea. This relationship between the feed almost extinguishes consumer’s free thought and providing them an allusion of what they desire. I agree that feed is implanting itself into the populations mind and providing them with thoughts and ideas rather than letting them think for themselves, because throughout the novel, the population is constantly changing its appearance and clothes to match the new trends arising, providing more money for the corporations which created the feed. Furthermore, the feed often distracts a person from their surrounding and fills their minds with marketing. When Titus first saw Violet, he said “Her face, it was like, I don 't know, it was beautiful. It just, it wasn 't the way--I guess it wasn 't just the way it looked like, but also how she was standing. With her arm. I just started at her. Everyone is in a consumer’s hypnosis, even if you think you are not. When you go to a store and pick one brand over the other, you are now under their spell. The spell/ hypnosis is how companies get you to buy there things over other companies and keep you hooked. Either through commercials or offering something that you think will make your life better by what they tell you. For example, you go to the store and you need to buy water, once you get to the lane and look, there is 10 different types of water you can buy. You go pick one either because the picture is better or you seen the commercial the other day and you want it. During the length of this paper we will talk about two important writers, Kalle Lasn the writer of “The Cult You’re in” and Benoit Denizet-Lewis writer of “ The Man Behind Abercrombie & Fitch”. They both talk about similar topics that go hand and hand with each other, they talk about the consumers “Dream”, how companies recruit the consumers, who cult members really are, how people are forced to wear something they don’t want, and about slackers.

This quote shows our real world, and the people that spend money, but they forget about the value of money. Nowadays people want more that they have. They forget how many things they have, and how much money they spend. Most people when they see other people having something better, and in that moment they want to have it also. Also, people forget how hard they got that money, but how easily and quickly they spend it. In the article “The treadmill of consumption” by Roberts, he says that people are willing to go into debt to buy certain products and brands. That is right that people can do crazy things to buy certain goods.

This is shown when Mr. Pym worries more about money and reputation then his employees, when Whimsey informs him of the drug dealing in his office. “But Mr. Pym was past helping anybody. The top figures in the drug ring, like Mr. Pym and the manufacturers, are motivated by an ambition for more money. These people will even lie, steal, ruin lives, and even murder to protect their income. To Sayers, the root problem in society is materialism, which is a theme she addressed in this novel frequently.
