Edgar Allan Poe uses many brilliant writing strategies to create a strong atmosphere of fear and dread in his short story, The Tell-Tale Heart. By constantly having the reader claim his sanity, Edgar inflicts dread into the reader’s minds. The narrator sporadically reminds us that he isn’t mad, in one instance as the narrator is explaining how he’s shining the light into the old man’s eye he proclaims, “And now have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but over-acuteness of the senses” (Poe 305). While his goal is simply to assert he isn’t mad, he instead causes anxiety to encapsulate the reader’s mind. Also, by having to emphasize his rationality he emphasizes the terror going on throughout the story. Towards the end of the
story when the narrator goes completely crazy and screeches: “here! –it is the beating of his hideous heart!” (Poe 306). This not only proves his insanity but also enthralls the reader’s mind with fear of other people in this world who are as unstable as the narrator. Edgar also uses dramatic irony to craft an atmosphere of fright. The narrator dramatically utters: “I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he passed the night” (Poe 303). He talks about how nice he was to the old man in the morning, yet the readers know that the night before he would stay there gawking at the old man. The narrator also imposes fear through dramatic irony by saying: “Upon the eighth night I was more than usually cautious in opening the door” (Poe 304). This example of dramatic irony hints that this will be the night that he is going to murder the old man, but the old man still has no idea what will happen. Because the reader knows the old man will get killed but cannot forewarn him, fear is imposed. Edgar Allan Poe creates an environment of complete terror and distress by using dramatic irony and making the narrator endlessly claim he is sane.

The narrator, in this story, adds to the overall effect of horror by continually stressing to the reader that he or she is not mad, and tries to convince us of that fact by how carefully this brutal crime was planned and executed. The point of view helps communicate that the theme is madness to the audience because from the beginning the narrator uses repetition, onomatopoeias, similes, hyperboles, metaphors and irony.
In “The Tell Tale Heart” Edgar Allan Poe builds up suspense by guiding us through the darkness that dwells inside his character’s heart and mind. Poe masterfully demonstrates the theme of guilt and its relationship to the narrator’s madness. In this classic gothic tale, guilt is not simply present in the insistently beating heart. It insinuates itself earlier in the story through the old man’s eye and slowly takes over the theme without remorse. Through his writing, Poe directly attributes the narrator’s guilt to his inability to admit his illness and offers his obsession with imaginary events - The eye’s ability to see inside his soul and the sound of a beating heart- as plausible causes for the madness that plagues him. After reading the story, the audience is left wondering whether the guilt created the madness, or vice versa.

Through these elements we can easily see how guilt, an emotion, can be more powerful than insanity. Even the most demented criminal has feelings of guilt, if not remorse, for what he has done. This is shown exquisitely in Poe's writing. All three elements were used to their extreme to convey the theme. The balance of the elements is such that some flow into others. It is sometimes hard to distinguish one from another. Poe's usage of these elements shows his mastery not only over the pen, but over the mind as well.
