The stories The Tell-Tale Heart and The Yellow Wallpaper have very similar characteristics including that both protagonists suffer from mental illnesses. Another similarity is that the point of view of both stories is written using first-person narration. In order to accurately convey the nature of a character’s madness, it is necessary to use first-person narration. Therefore, the reader can clearly see into the character’s thoughts and emotions, which creates a more detailed story. You will witness the importance of using first-person narration in the following stories.
To begin with The Tell-Tale Heart is a story written by Edgar Allan Poe, about a man that had convinced himself that an elderly man’s injured eye was evil due to its blue glow. He was so convinced that the eye was evil that he planned to remove the eye in the man’s sleep. He went into the man’s room several times while he was sleeping. Unfortunately, one night the man awoke from his sleep and the protagonist felt the need to take the elderly man’s life in order to get rid of the evil. He then buried him under the floor boards in the kitchen. A few moments later the police arrived on a disturbance call and ask to search the home. They had completed the search and found no sign of foul play. He invited the police officers to stay for refreshment. During the conversation the protagonist begins to imagine the sound of the old man’s heart beat, it grew louder and louder until he final confessed to the unsuspecting officers. This story was written in the first-person so that the reader may hear the thoughts of the character allowing the reader to experience all sides of the character.

In The Yellow Wallpaper the protagonist tell us what she is experiencing every night with the woman trapped inside the wallpaper and how she keeps her up at night along with the feelings she has towards her illness.
In conclusion, there are different points of view for various genres of literature. However, when the plot involves internal conflict like the mental illness shown in these two stories, it is important to narrate in the first person. This ensures that the reader perceives the story the way it was intended by the author. Using first person point of view for these two stories was critical for creating the suspense in the story and also making them interesting literature.
