Allowing students to be able to sleep more would be very beneficial to attendance, academic scores, and the student’s energy! It also talks about how even students reading the article can step up and show their opinion to their school district about school starting times! in the article it states,” Your body isn't just on a later schedule though— your brain also needs more total hours of sleep (about 9.25 a night) to function at its best. To sum up, if schools start earlier, it would be helping more than 60% of all students to get a sufficient amount of sleep! However, many people may argue that making the school starting time later would take away from time that you could use for extracurricular activities, such as sports or learning and instrument! This is not the case, because how can you do an after school activity if you too sleepy to even do it? It’s been scientifically proven that most kids tend to play sports better after getting a good rest, than kids who didn’t. For example, would you want to play more after sleeping and getting you energy back, or without sleeping, or rest? Most people would say they would like some rest, as it gives them some energy. In the end, if students could sleep more before school, they would be better in their studies, they would be less tardy and absent, and they would have more energy to do other things. Denby suggests that these films can be classifies as revenge fanaticism, created by the “nerds” that were bullied throughout high school. He also draws a connection to the Littleton shooters, proposing the idea that Klebold and Harris must have forgotten the plot twist in real life. There were many things that I evaluated throughout the time I read this book, but I found it very intriguing to look deeper into who Amelia was as a person before she got involved with the Maggies. Amelia was the girl who was always found with a stack of books in her arms waiting to be read and re-read. She was never one to be clandestine and hide things from her best friend or her mother. Amelia’s image is best stated in a quote that the author makes about Amelia’s life and how people viewed her as a person. Kimberly pronounces, “Amelia wasn’t the kind of girl people hated. She was smart and pretty and athletic. A girl people might have been jealous of, if she wasn’t so fundamentally modest. She didn’t go around trying to draw attention to herself the way Sylvia did. If the start time of schools is pushed back, then the end time of school would likely be pushed back in order to make up for lost class time. If the end time of school is pushed back, then after school activities would need to be pushed back as well, leaving teenagers getting to their homes later in the evening which would to lead them going to sleep later. This argument undeniably valid, and there is no easy way around it. In order to not lose academic time, a compromise must be implemented. The start times of schools must be pushed back in order to allow teens to live healthy lifestyles, but the end time of schools does not have to be. Instead of pushing the whole day back an hour or two to compensate for losing the first hour or two, just push the start time back. This may seem counterintuitive because it would lead to schools losing class time. To make up for the lost time, schools should extend their year. Schools should add on an extra week or so, depending on how much school time was lost to the later start time, so that no class time would actually be lost. This compromise allows for better mental health of students as well as increased safety on the roads. Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
Most students have a hard time coming to school, maybe it is because they don’t like learning, or maybe because it is boring. Or, is the student’s hatred toward school because it starts way too early in the morning. Class attendance improved, and there were fewer visits to the health center for fatigue-related complaints. Plus, the number of students who said they felt unhappy, depressed, annoyed or irritated dropped significantly.” This clearly demonstrates that student’s attitudes changed toward the idea of going to school after the school time was delayed. You can say this because after the delay in school time started, the attendance went up which means that students wanted to show up at school. Students also felt that they were not as depressed as when the middle school starting time was earlier. You may be thinking that if the school time is delayed, children may start staying up later at night. This is not really true because going to school is a lot of work and it also requires a lot of homework to be done. Most students are tired by the end of school, and even more tired after they are done with all of their homework. Children will definitely want to go to bed early to get a full night's rest, this is because students will take advantage of this since school starts early in the morning. Even if they do go to bed late, it would probably be because of after school activities and a lot of homework, not because the children wanted to stay up late on purpose.
