The Techniques Used by Shakespeare to Keep the Audience in Interested in Romeo and Juliet

The prologue reveals that there are two rich and powerful families

with so much hatred for each other described as an ''ancient grudge''.

It is also said that a boy has been given birth in one family and in

the other family, a girl. Furthermore, the girl and the boy will be

''star crossed'' lovers, meaning something tragic and disastrous is

bound to result from their love.

The characters develop throughout the play by changing their attitudes

and their impressions. For example, Romeo changes his attitude when

catastrophe (in the form of Tybalt) strikes his friend Mercuitio. The

relationship between Juliet and her parents also changes, when

contrast obedient passive Lord Capulet (Juliet's father) ask's her to

wed Count Paris when unbeknown to him, she is already married to

Romeo, so she refuses her father. He responds shouting at Juliet

rejecting Count Paris ''either marry Count Paris or you shall be a

pauper sitting on the streets begging''. It has become absolutely

worse for Juliet for there it has come to the point where she has to

choose, what's more marry Count Paris or else suicide (kill herself)

nevertheless just then she goes to Friar Lawrence as a last resort and

ask's for his opinion. Her loyalties change, because initially when

Juliet had told the Nurse that she required marrying Romeo and that

she desperately needed her support, so as a result the nurse had

supported Juliet. Conversely that very same Nurse thoughtfully advised

Juliet to comply with her parents desires illuminating her true

feeling and getting on with her life. Romeo ...

This play also deals with the idea of fate like many of Shakespeare's

other plays. The fate caused by the circumstances of the feuding

families predicted that these two would not be able to live together

with the complete happiness of their families. The deaths of Mercutio

and Tybalt resulted partly from the marriage, not to mention the

deaths of Romeo and Juliet. It seems that although they did so much to

stay together, fate would not allow it.

Conclusion

This play is so popular during the past years and decades. And however

there is evidence that this play is still popular because of the

characters like Romeo who has become universal for a lady's man and

Juliet for a man's lady and their dialogues and the balcony scene is

known as the place where the two lovers confessed their true love.
