The Synthesis of Knowledge
"Society values mental labor more highly than manual labor." This is a claim that Ruth Hubbard makes in her essay "Science, Facts, and Feminism." This claim suggests that those who are the thinkers, the innovators, the inventors, and the great minds are highly valued by society; however, those who are the doers, the laborers, the hand-crafters, and the workers are not valued as greatly. Hubbard implies that society regards mental labor as more important than manual labor because it requires more specifically human qualities. Knowledge making is one of these specifically human qualities. Mental laborers and manual laborers are distinguished by this knowledge making process.
For Hubbard’s claim to have meaning, there are assumptions that must underpin the claim. First, society must value labor. Labor must be something usable in society. A distinction between manual labor and mental labor must exist. A line must be drawn as to what makes mental labor mental and manual labor manual. There exists a specifically human quality, like knowledge making, which classifies the mental and manual laborers. Labor must exist in society to place value upon it. One also must assume that the more knowledge making ability one has, the more successful one can potentially be. These assumptions must be accounted for, for the claim to have any validity.
This claim, to me, explains what can be said about the value of knowledge making and experience. Knowledge making is valued greatly by society and society values those who posses this knowledge making ability. Knowledge comes from personal experience and these experiences make that person more intelligent. One makes a decision, and then one learns from the consequences of that decision resulting in more apprehension. An example of building knowledge making is when a small child touches a hot pan on the stove and gets burnt. This child’s knowledge making has increased and the child knows to never touch a pan on the stove without proper protection.
Book knowledge is another important element. This type of knowledge can be defined from what results in a college degree, a doctorate, or just a secondary degree of education. One must have base comprehension of empirical insight. Mental laborers have this intuitive synthesis of knowledge where manual laborers do not posses as much. An example of this book knowledge is taking a course in trigonometry and how it affects future comprehension. With trigonometry learned, mathematical calculus can be more easily learned.
Unskilled laborers are the first to lose their jobs when new technology is introduced to an industry. With the introduction of the of the cotton picker in 1944, costs to pick cotton decreased by more than eighty percent (Moses 6). Landowners still had their farms and even higher profit margins, but Black cotton pickers lost their jobs. Similarly, assembly line workers have begun to lose their jobs because robots can do their job faster and more efficiently (Moses 8). To prevent the unemployment of Black people in this field and other labor intensive jobs alike, technology must be adopted, and algebra must be used to do so. These effects include destruction of the environment, alteration of gene structures in plants and animals, water contamination, and an upset of nature’s delicate balance. This article is an impassioned plea to the world to understand the threat and demand the information necessary to make an informed consent on use of these deadly substances.
Schnitzler’s stream of consciousness style of writing is extremely effective in conveying the onslaughts of hysteric thoughts. Not only does it help that he intertwines Else’s thoughts with the dialogue she partakes in, but he also contrasts her thoughts with each word or action she says or performs. This technique allows the readers to see the different internal conflicts she feels and how her thoughts fall deeper and deeper into hysteria the more she forces herself to comply with her family’s matters. Overall, Fräulein Else is an impressive, vivid depiction of the loss of innocence and confusion present in an inexperienced, young maiden Schnitzler presents through his writing.
Sex trafficking is a term that covers a range of activities. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines it as “a modern-day form of slavery in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is under the age of 18 years” (The Campaign 1). Victims of sex trafficking may be forced to do any number of activities to earn money for their traffickers. These include “prostitution, pornography, stripping, live-sex shows, mail-order brides, military prostitution and sex tourism” (10). Wherever there is demand for the sexual exploitation of a certain type of individual, such as teenage girls, young boys or children, traffickers will find people to meet that demand. Unfortunately, this puts innocent people in situations where they are taken advantage of.
Rachel Carson’s work Silent Spring, while it dramatizes the situation and events, also provides information on how society has suffered losses from the use of pesticides in recent years. She focuses highly on the irreversible damage to wildlife and the danger these new pesticides pose to humans. With Carson’s background and knack for writing, this piece was excellently written to exact a specific response from the uninformed reader. This piece does a bit of a poor job at balancing the gains and losses between pesticides and the welfare to humankind. Her purpose appears more wavering towards an impassioned plea for action against the use of these new insecticides than an informed piece striving to enlighten the population.
Rachel Cernansky said “His group’s study also found that conventionally grown farm crops are four times more likely than organic crops to contain pesticide residues.” Other people will say when you grow organic food they are helping out the environment. “Research is beginning to show organic foods can be better—and not only for the people who eat it. Growing foods organically also can help the environment, new data show.” Maybe the organic food people grow will not have the right fertilizer and will grow unhealthy for people. Rachel Cernansky says “For instance, organic fruits, vegetables and other crops must not have been treated with synthetic fertilizers, certain pesticides or sewage sludge.” Some people will say that a plant or animal will not have a disease but what if someone forgets to check that animal if they had a diseases and a person eats it than that person will get a disease. Rachel Cernansky says “Meat, eggs and milk must come from animals that have been raised according to specific health and welfare standards. Also, farmers may not treat these animals with antibiotics or growth hormones and must raise them on organic feed. Products with multiple ingredients must contain 95 percent or more organic content.” Other people might say that there are not any pesticides or diseases in any types of foods but there is diseases and pesticides in organic
In this introduction part of the book, “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, the author describes the destruction of the delicate balance of nature by human interference, especially by the wholesale use of insecticides. She carefully explains what is the balance of nature and how it is maintained naturally. Further, she informs the reader of the ways chemical poisons upset that balance and thereby kill life.
There is this Chinese saying that my father always tells me: “I have tasted more salt than you have rice.” The rice symbolizes the whole experience and the salt, being wisdom, is what you learned from the experiences. The size of a single grain of salt is far smaller compared to a grain of rice. If one consumed more salt than another’s rice, then according to this saying, someone that is older than another will have more wisdom than that another’s experiences in total. This idiom is usually used when an elder, usually a wise member of a Chinese community, is teaching a young one a lesson. So why do people value and gather experience so much? Marx delineates between the division of labor in society and in manufacture. He argues that many (or most) societies are structured with different roles for different people, “caused by differences of sex and age, a division that is consequently based on a purely physiological function” (Cap 392). This is because “different communities find different means of production … which … calls forth the mutual exchange of products” (Cap 393). An example might be that young men hunt and other groups perform other duties, and the community will share these goods. On the other hand, Marx claims that the division of labor in manufacture is purely a construct of capitalism. First, there is no reason that it would result from natural differences, such as physiology. Furthermore, the division “within the workshop implies the undisputed authority of the capitalist over men” (Cap 395), whereas, in the social division of labor, the workers “acknowledge no other authority but that of competition” (Cap 395). The division of labor in manufacture is only a particular organization within the natural division of different industries. While social roles may be normal, Marx holds firmly that capitalism is not natural, neutral, or inevitable.
