Chapter Notes: The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway Chapter 1 • Jack Barnes tells the reader about Robert Cohn, a middleweight boxing champion of Princeton who is a Jew and has a girl named Frances. • Both of them live in Paris. • Frances is determined to marry Cohn now that she’s getting old and her looks are fading. Chapter 2 • In winter Cohn goes to America to publish a book that is successful. • When he returns to Paris, he goes to Jack’s office and asks him to come with him to South America. • Jake says no. • He then has a drink with Cohn to try to drive him away • Cohn starts whining about Paris and wanting to travel but Jack still says no • Jack gets back to work and Cohn stays around the office to chill • After Jack is done …show more content…
with work he and Cohn have a drink Chapter 3 • Jack sees a cute prostitute named Georgette, and invites her to dinner. • They leave in a taxi and she makes a move but he says no that he is sick • At dinner he tells her about WWI and that he got an injury of a sexual nature. • Frances, Cohn and a few others come by and invite them to go dancing. • The club is hot and a woman named Brett enters with a bunch of guys. • Jake talks to Brett and decide to leave, Jake leaves some money for the prostitute • They find a cab, and she tells him that she’s miserable. Chapter 4 • They kiss but Brett stops • She says she loves him but they cant date • She bring up Jack’s injury from the war and Jake dismisses it • Both of them head to a café for drinks • At the café a man called Mippipopolous and Brett have a conversation about Paris • Jake decides to go home and tells Brett that he will see her next evening • Jake can’t sleep • He starts to cry • Later in the night Brett comes along drunk as a skunk and chats before leaving again Chapter 5 • The next morning he gets up and goes to his office • He and Robert then go out to lunch. • Cohn asks Jake about Brett • She is going through a divorce, and is now also engaged to a guy named Mike Campbell. • Jake met Brett when she worked in hospital during WWI. • Cohn admits that Jake is his best friend. Chapter 6 • Brett stands Jake up • Jake heads to a café where he meets Harvey Stone. • Robert shows up and Harvey leaves • He’s struggling to write a novel. • Frances arrives and starts to pick on Cohn • She tells Jake she thinks he will break up with her • He heads back to his flat. Chapter 7 • He finds out that that Brett and Mippipopolus came by and would return in an hour. • Brett shows up and tells him she’s vacationing to Spain • They leave for dinner and dance • He drops her off before he heads home. Chapter 8 • Frances is in Britain and Cohn is also vacationing • Jake plans to vacation to Spain with a friend named Bill Gorton by the end of June. • The two friends then leave and go to a little restaurant and eat. • They meet up later with Brett and Mike • Mike is very drunk and him and Brett go home • Jake and Bill go watch a fight Chapter 9 • Bill and Jake go to meet Cohn in a town called Bayonne in Spain • Brett and Mike decide to join them • Jake walks Brett back to her hotel at her request • Jake finds out that she was in San Sebastian with Cohn. • Brett apparently fooled around with Cohn • Bill and Jake take a train to Spain, and when they arrive at the station and meet Cohn. Chapter 10 • Jake can speak Spanish well and a lot better than Bill or Cohn • Cohn is unaware that Jake knows about Brett in him in San Sebastian • Cohn and Jake decide to check and see if Brett and Mike have arrived • They end up not showing up because they stayed in San Sebastian • Jake receives a telegram saying that they have decided to spend the night in San Sebastian. • Jake buys bus tickets to take a ride up to Burguete, where they are going to fish. • Cohn flakes on them and says he’s going to meet up Brett and Mike in San Sebastian Chapter 11 • Everyone inside the bus is drinking wine • They arrive at an inn. • They have a meal, and then head off to bed. Chapter 12 • The next day, they decide walk to the Irati River to start fishing • Jake tells Bill that he was in love with Brett for a long time • They spend the next few days having fun with a man named Harris. Chapter 13 • Brett and Mike plan to rejoin Jake and Bill in Pamplona with Cohn comes along too • They all finally get their hotel, the Montoya Hotel in Pamplona.
• Jake is excited for the bull-fights, since he really likes bull-fighting • Jake finds dinner that night pleasant, mostly because of Brett Chapter 14 • Jake can’t sleep because he is preoccupied of thoughts regarding Brett. • He then starts thinking about how some of the group acted when they were drunk • Jake goes to confess at a catholic church. • Brett gets her fortune told by gypsies Chapter 15 • The Fiesta of San Fermin starts • The streets are full of people and tourists • Jake is pushed into a wine shop • Cohn’s passed out in the back of a shop • Jake ends up sleeping in Cohn’s room • He wakes up and finds bulls to running into the bull ring • Everyone seats themselves for the bull-fight • Bill and Jake get front row seats, and closely watch a man called Romero during his performance • Brett watches Romero in awe and starts to be all gaga over him Chapter 16 • Jake heads to a café to meet everyone • He runs into romero and a is introduced to a bull fighting critic • Brett asks Jake for an introduction • Romero starts flirting with Brett constantly • Mike and Cohn almost start to fight inside the cafe • Jake and Brett start talking by
themselves • She asks Jake if he still loves her. He says yes. • She then tells to Jake that she’s in love with Romero. • She asks for his help in finding Romero. Chapter 17 • Cohn shows up angry and wants to know where Brett is but Jake won't tell him. • Cohn completely decks Jake and Mike • Cohn says he’s leaving and asks Jake to forgive him • Jake makes it in time to see the running of the bulls and a man is killed by a bull • Jake runs into Bill and Mike and they tell him that Cohn had beat up Romero when he caught him and Brett together • Brett is taking care of Romero Chapter 18 • Brett shows up and tells everyone how Romero’s doing • Brett asks Jake to watch Mike for her • Jake is extremely drunk finds mike on his way back to his room • Mike tells him that Brett has left town with Romero. Chapter 19 • Jake says he needs a vacation by himself now • The three stop for one last drink • Jake gets two telegrams from Brett asking for his help • He rides to Madrid on a train to find her • He gets to her hotel and she tells him that she broke up with Romero. • Brett and Jake have lunch then they take a ride around the city • She keeps talking about how good they could be together • Jake, probably tired of her BS just tells her that it’s "pretty to think so."
