The play focuses on the love story between Romeo and Juliet but it also shows the subplot of the rivalry between their two families (the Montagues and the Capulets). Creating more tension and problems for the young couple. This subplot affected the story as a whole because without the rivaling families Romeo and Juliet would have most likely gotten married and would not have died in the end of the play.
