A true friend. For many, this is a concept that is easily personified but boundlessly difficult to explain. However, Michel de Montaigne, in his essay Of Friendship, attempts to clarify this relationship. Essentially, he states that true friendship occurs when both souls enjoy the connection and wish to have the relationship grow. Although this sounds much like love, de Montaigne claims the key difference is that passion is not constantly a factor among friends. This can be taken to mean that a friendship is a relationship that is chosen willfully, and cherished as much as a lover. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, there is much evidence of such a relationship between the titular Hamlet and Horatio. The most compelling of this evidence is contained within Hamlet’s reaction to Horatio’s arrival in 3.2.
This encounter takes place directly prior to the “play-within-a-play” plot that Hamlet devises to ascertain Claudius’ guilt. In terms of local significance, this is when Hamlet makes Horatio aware of his plan, as well as an accomplice by asking him to observe Claudius. During the reenactment of the Murder of Gonzago, Hamlet is shown to lose most of his control and succumb to his passion, especially after Claudius’ reaction to the poison in the ear. Clearly excited before the play as well, Hamlet manages to maintain in control of his emotions here. This contrast of emotional control is depicted very clearly by Derek Jacobi. In that version Patrick Stewart’s Claudius exits the scene more calmly than expected, but Hamlet displays a madness that is witnessed by many in the audience.

Friendship is an idea that is easily forgotten and difficult to conceptualize. It is one thing to call another a friend, but a true friend is a completely different matter. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this issue is addressed through the relationship of Hamlet and Horatio. Amidst all of the madness of the surrounding plot, this true friendship never wavered and remained true up until and after Hamlet’s death.
Throughout the story, Horatio is continuously shown as the voice of reason and clarity. He is the authority figure and it is through him that we see the truth behind the actions of Hamlet and the others. Throughout literature, there a character who provides a moral compass for other characters. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Horatio’s character seems fairly simple: somewhat of a “yes-man” to Hamlet, often agreeing with anything Hamlet says. However, at the end of the play we understand his significance, as he is one of the last survivors. This transition is unexpected because for most of the play, Horatio is a reserved character and doesn’t speak very often. Despite this, it is clear that Horatio and Hamlet’s friendship is extremely deep, and Hamlet trusts Horatio more than anybody. At first, the relationship is one of a prince and an advisor, but as the play goes on we realize they are in fact close friends. Horatio is much more than a “yes-man” to Hamlet, even though this may not be visible for most of the play. This friendship is due to three of Horatio’s characteristics: trustworthiness, loyalty, and admiration, which make him an ideal friend to Hamlet. These traits also inspire confidence in Horatio from other characters in the play. Even Shakespeare shows that he values Horatio by allowing him to survive at the end of the play.

There are many ways to interpret Hamlet 's relationship with Horatio. Most obviously, Horatio is the only person in the play that Hamlet trusts. He is the only one who knows for certain that Hamlet 's madness is an act, the one person Hamlet confides in personally, and the one whom bids Hamlet goodnight upon his death. Considering his conflicts with his family, Horatio is the only "family" Hamlet has. He understands that Horatio is very rational and thoughtful, yet not overly pensieve like himself. As the play continues, Horatio questions Hamlet 's judgment twice. Once is when Hamlet tells him of a letter from King Claudius that he has found in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern 's pack, telling the King of England that he must have Hamlet killed. The second instance is when Hamlet tells Horatio that he will fight Laertes, son of Polonius, who Hamlet killed earlier in the play. Horatio loves Hamlet with all his heart, but he is directed by a more sensible disposition, which makes him to speak the truth to Hamlet, despite the fact that Hamlet never once takes Horatio 's warnings. The character of Hamlet is very prestigious, but he has many shortcomings. In many cases, he shows that he is all words and no action. He waits until the very last minute to take a course of action. Hamlet realizes this, and he wishes that he had the characteristics of Fortinbras, Laertes, and Horatio.

The further you get into the plot, however, it is quite clear that there is one strong supporting character that shapes the role of the main character of the story. When Prince Hamlet, the main character learns that his uncle Claudius was the person who had killed his father, Prince Hamlet becomes enraged by this and vouches to honor his father's death by slaying his uncle for his wrongdoing. Prince Hamlet is further enraged and disgusted by the acts of his mother, Queen Gertrude who has most hastily agreed to marry the brother of the former king of Denmark. When this occurs, we begin to see the mental constitution of Prince Hamlet unravel. As the play progresses, we further see the toll that all of this plays on the main character when he begins to doubt whether or not the apparition that he is seen is really that of his father or not and begins to think that the specter is possibly evil in some way or another.

The perfection of Hamlet’s character has been called in question - perhaps by those who do not understand it. The character of Hamlet stands by itself.
