Historical Fiction Book Report Book Title: The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Author: John Boyne Publisher: Ember Copyright Date: 2006 Number of Pages: 216 Genre: Fiction Novel Point of View: The narrator’s point of view in the story is 3rd person omniscient which is when the narrator describes feelings from most of the people in the story and not one person. Setting: The setting of the story takes place in Germany during the Holocaust. In the story the family lives in Berlin, Germany which is a very large city in Germany. As history shows us Berlin was partially taken by the Nazi’s and was the split between the Nazi’s territory and the USSR, US, and Great Britain territory. The family moved out of the city and into wide open land called the “Out-With”. Main Character: The main character in the story is named Bruno. Bruno is a 9 year old boy who lives in a family of four. He has a dad and mom which he calls them mother and father and he has a sister named Gretel. Bruno is a curious and adventurous child. He is curious and adventurous because when his parents told him not to go far from the house, he still went far and found the fence that lead to a concentration camp. He also believes he is adventurous and he wants to become an explorer when he grows up. He is also out-going because he meets a friend named Shmuel that is in the camp and Bruno isn’t afraid to talk to him. Conflict or Problem: The biggest conflict in the story is Bruno and his family moving and him being forced to live in the “Out-With” lifestyle. Bruno doesn’t want to leave his friends and his neighborhood of Berlin. They are moving because their father needs to help the Nazi’s in one of their bases. As you may know many people, not only kids, don’t like moving. T... ... middle of paper ... ...ing of the door to a gunshot. Theme: The main theme of the story is friendship. Friendship has everything to do with Bruno’s life. In the beginning when the family was moving Bruno was very upset because he and his friends planned out their life and that was coming to an end. When Bruno searched his new land he found a friend named Shmuel. The whole story evolves around Bruno and Shmuel’s friendship and how close they are. This shows that their friendship was the main theme of the story. Recommendation: I would absolutely recommend this story to a friend. I think this story was very likeable and make people share feeling with Bruno. When he climbed under the fence I was very nervous for Bruno. This book can change many peoples feelings and have them keep their eyes on the book. This is why I would recommend this book to a friend who is at least 10-11 years old.
I would recommend this book to those people who like to read science fiction books. I like this book because it always kept you hanging and always made you want to keep reading ahead. The only bad thing is that this book is one of those books where the story does not end the quest that the boy is on doesn’t get finished so u have to by the book to find out what happens next.
It all begins simply enough. Nine-year-old Bruno has to suddenly leave a familiar and beloved home where he could slide five floors down on a fine banister, and move with his parents and his twelve year old sister Gretel to a place called ‘Out With', where Father was going to be doing a very important job. ‘ The Fury' had dined with them the week before, and after that Bruno's father was given a brand new assignment, and as Bruno's mother told him, he would now have to wear a grander uniform than the one he had been wearing. So the family, with their entourage of staff and servants, leaves bustling Berlin. Sadly for Bruno, he has to also leave behind his three best friends, not to mention his beloved grandparents; he has to move far away to a much smaller, sequestered house with only Gretel (whom he thinks of as a Hopeless Case) for company. From his bedroom window, homesick Bruno can see groups of people in the distance, all in striped pyjamas moving about slowly behind a tall and endless wire fence. And because Bruno loves exploring, he soon sets out to find out more, although when he had asked his father who the people in the striped pyjamas were, his father had said that they were not people. The language and structure of this novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by the Irish writer John Boyne, labelled as young adult fiction in early editions, is deceptively simple. But this is definitely a book that adults must read; it is a fable set in living history that will jolt readers of all ages.
Point of View: The story is told from the third person omniscient point of view.
Later that day, Bruno began exploring the fenced place that divided their family’s property and the compound next door. He felt like he was walking for hours, then he saw a young boy around his age. The boy, Shmuel, lives on the other side of that fence. Shmuel talks to Bruno about how he use to live right above his father’s watch store, but then the soldiers came and took his family to a single room and they were forced to share with lots of other strange people. Then after awhile of being there they brought them to the camp,

Without a point of view, the plot is nonexistent. Point of view impacts every part of the plot. The plot is determined on what and especially how the story is noticed, visualized, and captured. Rather the story is told through first, second or third person, you will always be aware of a specific tone or mood of the story, since each and every standpoint has a different
Bruno wanted to go out and explore but his mother had told him not to so Bruno went when his mother wasn’t home then he met Shmuel. In the movie I saw that Bruno was playing on the swing and saw the side door half open and was curious so he went in the back garden to explore but his mother saw him and stopped him. From this I can infer that Bruno’s mother did not Bruno going in the back garden because the Jewish worker comes from there and because the house is close to a concentration camp. I know because the Nazis and German people blamed the Jews for the loss of World War I, and thought that all Jewish people should be killed. The movie showed that when Bruno’s mother left for town he went out to the back door to explore and eventually he
Instead there were abundance of people in groups, staring at the ground , looking all melancholic and they all had one thing in common: They were all terribly skinny and their eyes were sunken as well as having shaved heads. Bruno looked everywhere and didn’t like it at all, he wanted to go home but he promised Shmuel that he’d help out finding his father. As they started to look for clues they got caught up in a never ending march. That’s when Bruno wanted to really go home and told Shmuel to walk him t the fence but at that exact moment the soldiers started pushing all the people who were marching and pushed them into a room. Bruno was never seen again after

There Bruno meets and befriends Shmuel an 8-year-old Jewish boy, who is a prisoner in one the Nazi concentration camps, near Bruno’s new home. In the beginning we can see how Bruno’s life is so different from Shmuel’s. Bruno seems to have a very normal happy life. He gets to play all day, he gets to study, and most importantly he is free. Unaware of what is happening around him. Unlike Bruno, Shmuel is an unhappy boy who was separated from his mother
