Without stress life is empty. No matter where we go stress will be there always. Stress is a big problem for college students. The first year of college is a new adventure, but there is few challenges to on the way. On a college campus, student’s life change — behavior, academic performance, career or major choice, and values. Faced with many kind of common stress, managing stress, finance, academic performance, symptoms of stress, stress and mental stress. "You can determine how you use your time or by default, let others plan it for you," says Beverly Coggins. This can pull minds out of the stressful day, so it have time to “replenish your energy” (hbr.org). Students should always review the progress, and whether they approached their goals (hbr.org). No one is perfect, don’t always shoot for perfection, because it will only add on stress. To handle stress, talk to someone about your problems, one of the worst way to handle stress is to hold the feelings in. There are also psychologists on campus to help students with their needs. According to the College Health website, “No one is immune from stress, but those entering the ivory towers of college are particularly vulnerable to it.” Attending college for the first time gave me a feeling of displacement, nonetheless, I maintained my sense of priority, I am here to learn, here to excel, and here to focus on my objective.
Stress is an important problem faced by many college students, especially first year students, and it can have a large impact on college freshmen. For example, according to Hirsch and Keniston (1970), about half of first year students do not graduate from college due to dropping out (p. 1-20). Also, David Leonhardt (2009) agrees that the United States excels at putting “teenagers in college, but only half of students who enroll end up with a bachelor’s degree” (p. 1). In addition, the level of stress seems to increase each year. For instance, the National Health Ministries (2006) claim that many college students have become “more overwhelmed and stressed” than the student generation of the last fifteen years (p. 2).
While many first year college students are over stressed and constantly in a state of panic or fear, I was able to teach my brain how to relax and keep stress to a minimum. It is because of this that my first year of college has been relatively easier then
First semester college freshman battle stress, depression, and anxiety caused by the transition from high school to college. Adaptation alone is a stressful series of occurring events, and to adapt to their [freshman] surrounding environment, an individual must manage problems, challenges, and demands in his or her daily life (Dyson 2). The transition from high school to a major university is portrayed as the process of growing into adulthood from youth. On top of being unfamiliar with college life, many freshmen second guess their academic abilities and whether or not they can meet the expatiations of their over zealous parents. Rachael Dyson asserts, freshmen students are challenged by an individual’s personal security, need for acceptance, need for comfort, and social support system (Dyson 2). Stress generally occurs when demands placed on an individual surpass his or her ability to endure. Many freshmen students rely on mom and dad for physical and emotional support. Without the help of their parents, some students poorly adjust to university life, “as noted thus far, the need to adjust to a new situation, the experience of stress, and the use of different types of coping strategies may be related to the experience of physical and psychological symptoms in individuals”(Dyson 4). Generalized stress is defined as a condition of psychological stimulation that results when external strain surpasses a person’s adaptive abilities. Academic stress is studied comprehensively as a significant factor in college student adjustment ( Brown 1).
College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.
Since, college students tend to have a lot on their hands with balancing finals, family, and working; might be too much to handle. It can build up stress which can also build up anxiety. Students in poverty can relate to the stress because the affordability of college can put pressure onto themselves and family members trying to save extra cash so their children can earn a degree and a better education that they wish they had in their young adult life.
The pressures students face are much greater than previous years in high school. The need to meet new people, find a high paying job, and extracurriculars all play a role in elevating stress levels on college campuses. Now, JHU freshman can add worrying about fall semester grades to that list of never ending reasons of why students are so stressed. According to Ross et al., stress levels in college have been increasing dramatically and over 75% college students feel stressed about grades (4). Hopkins is notorious for its competitive academic environment, and students often feel even more stressed than those in the survey.
Going to college can be an exciting new experience that can challenge a person more than he or she thought was possible. Attending college, especially for the first time, can be a very stressful time in a person’s life. Some of the stress that is associated with attending college are living in a new place, having to meet new people, having new responsibilities, and of course the homework that goes along with taking classes. If a person does not learn to cope with these stressors in a healthy way, that person may become very overwhelmed and possibly depressed (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2010) .To keep one’s body and mind safe from the overexposure of stress, they can practice the following techniques.
Time management is one of the most crucial factors to college success for every student in college. Firstly, while living on campus, time usually isn’t an issue to students because they live on school grounds. There are many advantages that come with time and one of them is getting to class on time. However, this is actually the opposite for commuters because getting to class on time is quite a struggle. They have to struggle to wake up earlier than usual in order to use the public transportation. Students living on campus also have more access to on-site facilities because they don’t have to worry about going home so there is no time limit on how long they occupy these areas. An example is staying in the library because this is where you can get help from tutors on subjects you are struggling with. Also, they can use the writing center for as long as it is open without worrying about time. In contrast, commuters are limited to the use of these facilities because they have to take time into consideration while staying at the library or work...
It is no doubt that stress is a huge part of a college student’s life, with them having to work, deal with family, go to classes, and handle anything else that life throws at them. Dealing with stress can be extremely harmful to one’s body, and can take a huge toll on anyone. There isn’t any way to magically never see stress in our lives, but there is many different ways to help cope in ways of handing stress. There are many different ways to cope with stress some methods that are helpful, others being not as beneficial to you. Stress is something that I happen to face quite often especially this year with having to deal with lots of hardships, but in knowing how to cope with stress wont only help me but help out classmates go through college
Stress comes in many shapes and forms, it comes with the job of being human. My sources of stress come from the major parts of my life; academic pressure, social settings, and time management. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
