The first written constitution of the United States was The Articles of Confederation.. The Articles of Confederation failed because they did not have a strong central government. They was various problems and weaknesses with the articles of confederation, which is why we have the U.S. Constitution. One of the biggest weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation was that power was only granted to the central government on a goodwill basis from the states.
