In “The Stranger Beside Me”, by Ann Rule, she discusses the once loving man Ted Bundy who suffered from a series of events in his early life causing him to develop into one of the most deadly and fascinating serial killers known to man. In the Washington and Oregon state area, Bundy went on a killing spree throughout the 1970’s, targeting young college women who fitted a specific look. He would visit populated areas and prey on victims, killing for the thrill of pleasure. During the book Ann Rule discusses the damage that Bundy had caused to so many families and people during his reign of terror. I’ll be examining the reasoning and motives that caused Bundy to react in such a psychotic and violent way.

Typically having long dark hair parted down the middle, white, thin, and single. All of the bodies in Colorado that were found had been hit with a blunt object, raped, and sodomized. Bundy had been arrested when he was in Colorado for suspicion of burglary. He had turned his lights off to run through stop signs in the area. When the police searched his tan Volkswagen bug, he had an ice pick, handcuffs, crowbar, and pantyhose with eye holes cut out and other suspicious items. Taken to the police station, Bundy was picked out by an eye witness named Carol DaRonch who had been kidnapped by Bundy disguised as a police officer. While Bundy had gotten her into his car with consent he attempted to put handcuffs on Daronch to keep her in the car. Escaping from the struggle she was taken to the police department told the police the whole story. Police powdered down the handcuffs to check for latent fingerprints. Once Bundy was identified he was charged with attempted kidnapping. Sentenced to 15 years in prison Bundy soon broke out of prison by jumping out a bathroom window, he was caught a week later. For the second time Bundy had broken out of the Colorado prison and fled to Tallahassee, Florida. After he moved, many series of sorority house murders occurred. Blaming pornography as the cause of his fix on killing young women, some believe he killed more than 100 women simply because of psychopathic and sociopathic characteristics. Other psychologists have attempted to diagnose Bundy, but everyone has changed their mind from multi-personality disorder to schizophrenia. Bundy was given a very belittling childhood growing up. Living a lie his entire life and dealing with multiple losses could have been seen as a cause of the obsession. Evidence had all been linked to him who gave investigators no doubt of Bundy being responsible for the murders. Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers the world has ever seen, and will be known as one of the most clever and evil killers of all time. I personally believe as many do the same, he was a horrific man who did terrible things in an unspeakable manner. I am very grateful for reading this book to broaden my horizons and fully understand not all people may seem what they truly are and be careful when traveling to unknown
