In the Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson describes the class struggles between the wealthy and underprivileged individuals in the society. The upper class men in the novel are represented as very smart and wealthy, whereas the lower classmen are represented to have a lower education and live in a low standard of living. Benedict Cumberbatch said that “Upper class to me means you are either born into wealth or you’re royalty” The higher class individuals feel as if they are of royalty to the lower class and do not associate with any lower class individuals so it will not ruin or hurt their reputation. There are many examples in the novel that talks about how the upper class individuals treat the lower class poorly or just avoids them.
In the beginning of the novel a little eight year old girl was walking down a narrow street in front of a building that was near the center of the neighborhood until a disfigured man bumped into her causing her to fall down. Mr. Utterson and Mr. Ensfield and the little girl’s family decide to black mail the mysterious man to have him pay one hundred pounds for knocking the girl down. The mysterious man walked through a strange door and reappeared with a check and it signed by a respected third party Dr. Henry Jekyll. The crowd around the girl was astonished to see that he had money and they were all making sure that the check was valid. After questioning him; the man tells them that his name is Mr. Hyde and he walks off. The Strange door in the example represents a nice and average neighborhood that has some shady parts to it. In the Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there are many examples of social class struggles. Robert Louis Stevenson describes how it is harder to live as a member of the lower class than in the upper class. This novel shows that each class has a different attitude towards life. The upper class individuals feel that the lower class should treat them like kings and queens because of how much money and power they have. The poorer lower class people work for the upper classmen because they need the money to survive and to take care of their kids. The upper class does not want to associate with anyone who does not have a large amount of money and who you are not the brightest student. In our world’s history the upper class will always be on top of the lower class.
In his essay “Land of Opportunity” James W. Loewen details the ignorance that most American students have towards class structure. He bemoans the fact that most textbooks completely ignore the issue of class, and when it does it is usually only mentions middle class in order to make the point that America is a “middle class country. This is particularly grievous to Loewen because he believes, “Social class is probably the single most important variable in society. From womb to tomb, it correlates with almost all other social characteristics of people that we can measure.” Loewen simply believes that social class usually determine the paths that a person will take in life. It seems to be beneficial for the elite or dominant group to exercise their power over the less fortunate by putting obstacles in social mobility. Fussell puts in perspective that Americans need to realize that we all have a membership in a certain class. The author made me realize that I am a part of the mid proletarian class, the class that works everyday living off a day to day check (my mom was a hairstylist). Given the type of work my mother did, shaped how I was identified as a person I could say it most definitely impacted my view and status. I agree that humans reveal their class just by the way they behave for instance, Studs Terkel interviewed a woman and in this midst of the interview he poses the question, “What are your thoughts about social classes in the country” (Fussell, pg. 16) you can tell she was hesitant with slight enraged about the topic being brought up because she mentions that they should dismiss the term “social class”. Texts are a representation of their context and this is evident in Robert Stevenson’s novella: “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, where many values of late nineteenth century Victorian England values were reflected through the themes of the novel using language and structural features. These values included: technological advances, reputation and masculinity and are demonstrated in the text through literary and structure devices as well as the characterisation of the main character.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a classic story published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is about a man who transforms between two personae: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This novel focuses on Mr. Utterson, a lawyer and friend of Dr. Jekyll’s. The novel starts with John Utterson talking with his other friend who has just witnessed an odd situation. A man identified as Hyde run over a girl, only to pay off her family later with a check from Dr. Jekyll. This situation is made even stranger since Jekyll’s will has recently been changed. Mr. Hyde now stands to inherit everything. Mr. Utterson believing that the two men are separate people, thinks that the cruel Mr. Hyde is some how blackmailing Dr. Jekyll. Mr. Utterson questions Dr. Jekyll about Hyde, but Jekyll tells him to mind his own business. Unfortunately, Mr. Utterson cannot do that. A year later, Mr. Hyde attacks someone else: he beats a man with a cane, causing the man’s death. The police involve Mr. Utterson because he knew the victim. Mr. Utterson takes them to Mr. Hyde’s apartment, where they find the murder weapon, which is a gift that Mr. Utterson himself gave to Dr. Jekyll. Mr.
The reader is drawn to the plot of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde through the literary devices Stevenson employs. Foreshadowing displays the sense of mystery throughout the novel, the foreshadowing of the actions of Mr. Hyde leaves the reader wondering what will happen next. The ironic nature of Dr. Jekyll relates to the reader as a person, no person is completely perfect and Dr. Jekyll exhibits the natural wants and desires of humans. The irony behind Mr. Hyde adds an enigmatic side to the plot. These two devices expose the readers to the complexity of the novel and reveal the inner meaning of the hidden details.
Social classes have been around since the beginning of time. Most people are lead to believe that rich people live in beautiful and extravagant homes, throw luxurious parties and do not give a damn about keeping it a secret. The poor people are happy to have a roof over their heads and have food on the table and will work their asses off to make a penny. The higher the class that someone is in, the better that person’s life is perceived to be and vice-versa. There is old money versus new money, which determines which side of town one lives on. Everyone knows the difference in social classes and is able to see where most people fit in. In the classic novel, The Great Gatsby, the reader is exposed to many things that show a difference in social class that sadly, still exist in today. Most people have a dream of being in a certain class; whether they ever get to experience it or not, the dream is there. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, shows how social class plays a theme in the story.
Class for the purpose of this paper is the concept that those who are better off are of what can be considered to be upper class and those that lack financial means are of the lower class. Mantsios says that there is an absence of discussion in reference to the distinctions of classes (697). In a study performed by Susan Ostrander, in regards to the term “upper class” one woman responded “‘I hate to use the word ‘class.’ We are responsible, fortunate people, old families, the people who have something’” (697). Yet it appears to be opposite that those who are in this lower class realize the plight they suffer. As one student from Fremont High School noted, “‘The owners of the sewing factories need laborers. Correct…It’s not going be their own kids… You’re ghetto,’ said Fortino unrelentingly to her. ‘So Sew!’”(Kozol 645). The student who knew that he was more than likely to be stuff in his place was willing to point out this fault of the system. This topic which more than likely the well-off woman would stray from rather because she had life easier than Fortino will in his lifetime.
Society today is split in many different ways: the smart and the dumb, the pretty and the ugly, the popular and the awkward, and of course the rich and the poor. This key difference has led to many areas of conflict among the population. The rich and the poor often have different views on issues, and have different problems within their lives. Moral decay and materialism are two issues prevalent among the wealthy, while things such as socio-economic class conflict and the American dream may be more important to those without money. Ethics and responsibilities are an area of thought for both classes, with noblesse oblige leaning more towards the wealthy.
The members of theses higher levels are seen as groups of people that commonly interact with each other and in take each other’s opinions and concerns into account when formulating a decision. Stratification across the states has created a divide between classes. It has allowed the upper class to solely remain with the upper class, while the working class only associates with the working class. It has caused people to only feel comfortable within their own class. Stratification has allowed people to see others as those to be feared or as those to be ignored.
