James Choke is one of the hardest kids in his school. Nobody messes around with him. One day he reaches his boiling point at the hands of a girl in his classroom, as she continues to ridicule his overweight mother, he does what he thinks is the right thing and defends his mother by hitting the girl. The girls face is then cut open and James runs out of his class but his teacher attempts to stop him but gets pushed over in the process. Before James can get home and tell his mother what had happened, he finds that she had passed away in her armchair by overdosing on prescription medication and alcahol. One day he discovers an unmarked journal with no name, which depicts sadistic animal torture experiments, boasts of arson fires, and the planning for the serial killings of three women. Duncan decides to make amends for his failure last summer by tracking down the owner of the journal by using clues left hidden in the diary. After talking with his friend Vinny, Duncan decides to turn the journal over to the police, but they do not take him seriously, so he decides to get help from Vinny, do some research at the local library, and find out where the killer works and lives so they can prove to the police the diary is for real. But in the process when Duncan finds the house of the serial killer, he decides to take a look in it but unfortunately at that very time the serial killer appears and chases Duncan to the subway station. They get into fight there and they both fell on the subway tracks in the station where they get hit by the train. Duncan luckily survives but the serial killer dies.
Growing up, Charlie faced two difficult loses that changed his life by getting him admitted in the hospital. As a young boy, he lost his aunt in a car accident, and in middle school, he lost his best friend who shot himself. That Fall, Charlie walks through the doors his first day of highschool, and he sees how all the people he used to talk to and hang out with treat him like he’s not there. While in English class, Mr. Anderson, Charlie’s English teacher, notices that Charlie knew the correct answer, but he did not want to speak up and let his voice be heard. The movie ends with Charlie reading aloud his final letter to his friend, “This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story, you are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder, when you were listening to that song” (Chbosky). The now sober James still must face the criminal charges that he has no memory of receiving after he is released from the rehab center. He receives three months in jail, but he believes that Leonard has something to do with the reduced sentence since James believes that he was to serve three years. Shortly before leaving the clinic, Frey admits to beating a man and possibly killing him after he forced himself on James. He is relieved to get that off his chest and is released a day later. The book ends with James at a bar with his brother, who picked him up from the treatment facility, and the bartender throwing away an alcoholic beverage at James’s request after he looked and smelled it.

Unfortunately Stanley’s sent to Camp Green Lake for a crime he did not commit. You’d never fully understand the novel Holes by Louis Sachar until you’ve read it, the end of the novel was kind of surprising, but I feel more details should have used about involving when Zero comes home at the end.

During the film James has to make some tough decisions. When Bob first arrives into James life Bob is injured. James had to take him to the vet. During the vet visit James was forced to make a very important choice. He had to choose to stay at the vet and miss his mandatory appointment with his drug counselor, or skip the vet to make the appointment. James chooses to help Bob and stay at the vet. This shows that James is putting more important things before himself and he is learning to care about more than just drugs. With another mouth to feed James is desperate to have a job so he can take care of Bob. James is a singer, he plays music on the streets, but doesn't make that much money. Because of the lack of payment in this career James finds different odds and ends jobs to do. He doesn't give up, even when obstacles get in his way.
