Food security is an urgent subject that has been extensively debated in scientific fields. Considering the main definition of food security already presented, food insecurity exists when people do not have condition to ensure their food security. Despite the fact that food insecurity is usually associated with hunger, underweight, and undernourishment, we can assume that food insecurity is also related to nutritional disorders like overweight and obesity.
Given the needs of the world population for food, ensuring food security for humanity is a global challenge that needs attention. Approximately one billion people are fighting against hunger (FAO 2013), and approximately 2 billion are overweight (Patel 2008), meaning that nearly half of the world has some abnormality feed. So, it is possible to consider that the global food system is not aligned to global food needs (De Schutter 2011). India, for example, is a country with alarming portions of its population with food anomalies, both in terms of overweight/obesity and hunger/undernourishment (Doak et al. 2005; Stein et al. 2005).
The alarming increase in the consumption of unhealthy food products (e.g. soft drinks and processed foods with high levels of salt, fat, sodium and sugar) brings concerns related to global food security, malnutrition, and public health. Evidence indicates that the growth in consumption of such "unhealthy" foods has been higher in low and middle income countries (LMICs) than in high income countries (HICs) (Stuckler et al. 2012). Thus, it is reasonable to assume that the negative effects of the high intake of such foods, considering the aggravation of the nutritional anomalies arising from food insecurity will severely increase in developing countries.
Despite the fact that one of the main goals of the millennium is the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015 (United Nations 2013), many developing nations are still facing severe problems of hunger and undernourishment. Indeed, the global performance in combating hunger needs better delineated actions aiming to fight this reality (FAO 2010a). Evidences show that some countries, mostly African and Asian countries, have insufficient performance in their fight against hunger, undernourishment, and underweight diagnoses (FAO 2010b). Despite the efforts of humanity fighting global scenario, in 2011-2013 about 842 million people were suffering from chronic hunger (FAO 2013b). Thus, about 65% of the world’s population that suffers from hunger lives in seven countries (India, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Ethiopia) (FAO 2010a). African and Asian countries are those with the worst conditions in terms of food security as well as the worst progress towards achieving the millennium goal related to eradicate hunger (FAO 2013b; FAO 2010b).

The United States Department of Agriculture defines food unsecurity as the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food, is limited or uncertain for a household. Food insecurity also does not always mean that the household has nothing to eat. More simply stated it is the struggle to provide nutritional food for ones family and/or self. The people that suffer from food insecurity are not all living below the poverty line. In 2012 49.0 million people were considered food insecure in the United States of those 46.5 million were in poverty (Hunger & Poverty Statistics, 2012). Food insecurity can be defined in paragraph 3 by “[having] difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources. This 12.7% of American citizens also contains another group - children. Aged 10-17, 6.8 million adolescents struggle with a food insecurity. There have been several years of cuts to the social programs designed to help these people, along with the Great Recession continuing to leave an impact on the U.S. economy (para. 6). Under the Obama administration, $8.6 billion was cut from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps. From 1993-2001 under the Clinton administration, former President Bill Clinton’s administration “gutted the welfare system” (para. 15). Because of these budget cuts, the families who rely on food assistance from the government have been allotted less throughout the years. From a sociological perspective, the concepts of sociological imagination, class stratification, and social location are in effect when it comes to child hunger in the United States. There are many problems confronting our global food system. One of them is that the food is not distributed fairly or evenly in the world. Recent figures estimate that 316 million Africans, or approximately 35 percent of the continent's total population, is undernourished. Although hunger in Africa is hardly new, it now occurs in a world that has more than enough food to feed all its citizens. Moreover, while Africa's population is growing rapidly, it still has ample fertile land for growing food. Hunger therefore reflects not absolute food scarcity but rather people's lack of access to resources—whether at the individual, house-hold, comunity, or national leve that are needed to produce or purchase adequate food supplies. Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles. This essay will discuss the significance of the problem, a range of possible strategies to solve the problem, and go into detail on a select few that will correlate and work together to solve different factors of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
There are those that believe our planet has reached its maximum capacity to sustain humanity and we need to reduce our population to rectify it. It is also said that our planet is well capable of providing both the nutrition and caloric needs for humanity, both now and into the future as well. Regardless of where one’s opinion of the facts fall between these two arguments, global food security is not where it should be. Uneven development could be argued to be a cause of this. But it is not the only issue affecting the planet.
The United Nations recently published a list of goals they hope to accomplish by 2030 called the Sustainable Development Goals. These goals will replace the Millennium Development Goals, which were set in 2000, when they expire at the end of 2015. Some of these goals include ending poverty, promoting gender equality, and improving water and sanitation conditions.
