Although Piaget and his famed clinical method started within the realm of cognitive psychology, in the 1920’s, Piaget became a prime influence toward the beginning of organizational psychology. In the United States during the industrial revolution, there was a series of experiments with about 20,000 workers at Western Electric Company in Hawthorne, Illinois. A company who was already known for caring about the welfare of their employees wanted to run a trial of two sets of offices: one room as the control group, and the other to run experiments. Each of the stages performs on different principles, but “integrates and transforms the previous one as it comes into being” as the individual progresses to “adult intellectual functioning” (Feldman, 2004, p. 178). These stages are what were came to be known as Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development. The first stage was noted as the sensorimotor stage. As Feldman states, “What makes sensorimotor construction so remarkable is that it is not built from a previous system but rather from a set of natural reflexes with which the newborn comes into the world” (p. 197). With time progressing, the infant refines their movement with external stimuli. Also, if anyone has been with an infant, they quickly learn how the baby will gain the knowledge how if they repeat a particular action is rewarded, the more likely the action will be repeated. During this stage, the infant maintains the concept where the object of their attention no longer exists once it leaves the baby’s line of sight or sound. After the infant matures at this stage, they realize the object of attention still exists once it goes beyond the infant’s line-of-sight. In his theory of cognitive development, Piaget presents four stages of mental development: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. This is when individuals start using operations and replace intuitive reasoning with logical reasoning in concrete circumstances. Preoperational stage starts around age two through seven when the child enters pre-school level, begins talking in two word sentences and is beginning to experience “a more complete understanding of object permanence where the child's image-based thinking improves and develops with a capacity called representation and de-centration in which the child advances from centration to a more objective way of perceiving the world.”(para.1)
After the first month the baby moves onto the second sub-stage which is primary circular reactions,and lasts until the baby is about four months old. During this stage the baby will repeat certain things that bring them pleasure and desired outcomes. Babies will begin to see that a pattern of events is connected and will begin to expect the second event after the first event has happened.
He called this the sensorimotor period. There are six sub-stages in the sensorimotor stage. The first sub stage is simple reflex. This is an involuntary reaction that happens without the use of any thought. For example, when a baby sucks on something that is put into their mouth or when a baby jumps when startled by a loud noise. The second sub-stage is primary circular reactions. This reaction occurs at the age of one to four months old. This is when babies start to coordinate separate actions into single actions, when a baby puts their thumb in their mouth to suck on it. The Third sub-stage is secondary circular reaction and occurs between the ages four to eight month old. In this stage children become aware of things beyond their own body and start reacting to the outside world. The fourth sub-stage is called coordination of secondary circular reactions, and this is when the baby is eight months old to a year. The baby begins to develop goal directed behavior. Preoperational- During this stage, children around ages 2-7 begin to learn and use language. They start to understand meaning behind words, and their mental actions but they are unable to think “backwards” or truly understand why others do what they do; they cannot process others point of views. Also, they start to “pretend play”.
Piaget was firm in his concept of these stages. He was convinced that a person had to progress from one stage to the next, that this was a natural biological process influenced by the environment and experiences. Biology limits the point in time, but the environment determines the quality of development.
