Most books try to leave you with something good right? Everyone dies, but in this book it is a little different. In the middle of discouragement there is a spark of hope. In the book The Spectacular Now by Tim Sharp the main character's name is Sutter. Sutter is a high school senior in Oklahoma City. Sutter is a very laid back guy and a alcoholic party animal. At the beginning, he has a girlfriend named Cassidy. Although he is a good guy, we do not blame her for leaving him. He later on meets this new girl named Aimee. He ends up falling for her in the process of helping her. Aimee starts getting Sutter to take risks and make commitments. Sutter talks about his flasks a lot because it is always around him. Just how it is for us to pull out our cell phones and get on social media. When things start to get intense he pulls out his phone “Good thing I have the trusty flask” (36). In this book, we can see the flask in action when he starts dating Aimee. Aimee is the complete opposite of his ex Cassidy. Aimee is nerdy, super shy, and plain looking. She tries to get close to him and tries to go out her ways just to please Sutter. He tries to help her change and build confidence. Aimee notices how important his flask is to him so she starts doing it just so they can have something in common. Sutter knows he has an alcoholic problem. In fact, he tries to quit at one point. At the end of the book, Sutter has decided to embrace alcohol as his one and only relationship in life. Basically, the flask represents his only friend and his future. He rather spend the rest of his life holding a cold hard container filled with alcohol rather than a girl who loves him.
