The South vs The South book review
The purpose of this book is to tell us what happened in The Civil war era. The theme of the book is to teach about slavery. In addition, it talks about how slaves were treated. The civil war started April 12, 1861 and ended May 9, 1865. Abraham Lincoln thought slavery was wrong and worked hard to liberate the slaves.
The author is mostly talking about the slaves, and that they were abused or persecuted. The slaves tried to run away, to live freely. The owners were not going to be a problem, it was the slave patrolmen because they would catch the slaves and sale them or kill them. The owners used the slaves to help work the cotton gin and to working the fields picking cotton. “One eve of the civil war, when slaves made up only 12.7 percent of its population, the Border south grew almost none of the south’s cotton, sugar, and rice.” (Freehling p19) “Allegedly, only blacks could perform so-called nigger work under the brutal southern sun.”(Freehling p21) Once the civil war was over it was getting closer to freeing the slaves.

Prior to the 1950s, very little research had been done on the history and nature of the United States’ policies toward and relationships with African Americans, particularly in the South. To most historians, white domination and unequal treatment of Negroes were assumed to be constants of the political and social landscapes since the nation’s conception. Prominent Southern historian C. Vann Woodward, however, permanently changed history’s naïve understanding of race in America through his book entitled The Strange Career of Jim Crow. His provocative thesis explored evidence that had previously been overlooked by historians and gave a fresh foundation for more research on the topic of racial policies of the United States.
The Civil War, beginning in 1861 and ending in 1865, was a notorious event in American history for many influential reasons. Among them was the war 's conclusive role in determining a united or divided American nation, its efforts to successfully abolish the slavery institution and bring victory to the northern states. This Civil War was first inspired by the unsettling differences that divided the northern and southern states over the power that resided in the hands of the national government to constrain slavery from taking place within the territories. There was only one victor in the Civil War. Due to the lack of resources, plethora of weaknesses, and disorganized leadership the Southern States possessed in comparison to the Northern States,
When Timothy was a little child, the Civil War was occurring, but it did not affect him or his family’s life until after the Civil War has ended. At the age of four years old, Abraham Lincoln became president to the United States. The Civil War consisted of two sides: Union and Confederates. The Union fought for the freedom of slaves, while the confederates wanted to keep slavery. The South consisted with m...
South Carolina was one of the only states in which the black slaves and abolitionists outnumbered their oppressors. Denmark Vesey’s slave revolt consisted of over nine-thousand armed slaves, free blacks, and abolitionists, that would have absolutely devastated society in South Carolina for slave owners, and could have quite possibly been a major step towards the abolishment of slavery in the United states. Robertson succeeded in describing the harsh conditions of slaves in pre-civil war Charleston, South Carolina. This book also helped me to understand the distinctions between the different groups. These groups including the black slaves, free blacks, extreme abolitionists, and the pro-slavery communities.
1. The insight that each of these sources offers into slave life in the antebellum South is how slaves lived, worked, and were treated by their masters. The narratives talk about their nature of work, culture, and family in their passages. For example, in Solomon Northup 's passage he describes how he worked in the cotton field. Northup said that "An ordinary day 's work is considered two hundred pounds. A slave who is accustomed to picking, is punished, if he or she brings less quantity than that," (214). Northup explains how much cotton slaves had to bring from the cotton field and if a slave brought less or more weight than their previous weight ins then the slave is whipped because they were either slacking or have no been working to their
Imagine a historian, author of an award-winning dissertation and several books. He is an experienced lecturer and respected scholar; he is at the forefront of his field. His research methodology sets the bar for other academicians. He is so highly esteemed, in fact, that an article he has prepared is to be presented to and discussed by the United States’ oldest and largest society of professional historians. These are precisely the circumstances in which Ulrich B. Phillips wrote his 1928 essay, “The Central Theme of Southern History.” In this treatise he set forth a thesis which on its face is not revolutionary: that the cause behind which the South stood unified was not slavery, as such, but white supremacy. Over the course of fourteen elegantly written pages, Phillips advances his thesis with evidence from a variety of primary sources gleaned from his years of research. All of his reasoning and experience add weight to his distillation of Southern history into this one fairly simple idea, an idea so deceptively simple that it invites further study.
The Civil War was the bloodiest, most devestating war that has ever been fought on American soil. It began on April 12, 1861, at 4:30 in the morning. The main reason that the war was fought was because Southern states believed that they should have the right to use African-Americans as slaves, and the Northern States opposed that belief.
Between 1800 and 1860 slavery in the American South had become a ‘peculiar institution’ during these times. Although it may have seemed that the worst was over when it came to slavery, it had just begun. The time gap within 1800 and 1860 had slavery at an all time high from what it looks like. As soon as the cotton production had become a long staple trade source it gave more reason for slavery to exist. Varieties of slavery were instituted as well, especially once international slave trading was banned in America after 1808, they had to think of a way to keep it going – which they did. Nonetheless, slavery in the American South had never declined; it may have just come to a halt for a long while, but during this time between 1800 and 1860, it shows it could have been at an all time high.
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as president of the United States of America, the repercussions of which led to civil war. However it was not only Lincoln’s election that led to civil war but also the slavery debate between the northern and southern states and the state of the economy in the United States. Together with the election of Lincoln these caused a split, both politically and ideologically, between the North and South states which manifested into what is now refereed to as the American Civil War.
The author goes on to describe antebellum slavery. During this time he describes slavery as a massive expansion. He expresses this knowledge through numbers of slaves and overwhelming facts. At this time cotton boosted the economy of all the slave states, cotton producing or not. Cotton created an intense demand for slave labor and therefore slave prices rose to an all time high. Slave trading was very traumatic for the slaves, being separated from the only thing they knew. Some lived on plantations under a watchful eye and others worked right beside their owners. Slaves on large plantations usually worked in gangs, and there were better positions to work then others. Some gangs were separated into groups of lighter work, consisting of men and woman. Other gangs weren't so lucky and were assigned to hard labor.
War is in many circumstances is the only solution between two opposing forces when dealing with great difficulties . The American Civil War was no different than any other war but could be separated from others due to the role that African Americans took in configuring the direction of the conflict and aftermath of the Civil War.The period between the 1861 and 1870 is the essential time frame to analyze the development of the Antebellum Era to the apex of eruption of the warfare during the War between the states, followed by the age of Reconstruction which altered history to form America today. The President of the Union, Abraham Lincoln believed that any measure should be taken to preserve the Union, while the South believed in the power of the individual confederate states. African Americans were active participants,
Compare the two texts an extract from Black Boy by Richard Wright and A Brief Introduction To The History Of The Deep South for:
The Civil War was a war between the North and the South after several states in the south seceded after Lincoln's Presidency. The war first started off as states rights but as the war went on and progressed the war was fighting to end slavery. African Americans had an important impact on the Civil War.
Most people believe that it was over slavery when in fact it started over state’s rights and taxes. There is documentation that proves this for instance when Abraham said, “I have no purpose, directly, or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists.” He even used African Americans as spies or contrabands - confiscated enemy property to help him in the war. You see, "property" was still attached to them. Eventually, slavery’ became a more central part of the war. That’s when Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1869, but the Confederacy was unaffected, making it more difficult for slaves in the Confederacy to be free. At this point, many history books begin to falter. They forget to mention that the slaves had a prominent role in their freedom, not just by Lincoln. They had to make an extremely complicated decision: to either leave for the Union states, risk getting caught, and severely punished or stay and still be property. Those who chose freedom chose to pass that on to their descendants. They paved the way for people like me to be brought up
The Civil War was the fundamental event in America's historical realization. The war fixed two necessary questions which left it unclear by the revolution. The war all started because of rigid differences between the freemen and the slave states over the power of the national government to ban slavery in the regions that had not became states yet. The American Civil War was the biggest and by far the most vicious battle in the Western world between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the beginning of World War I in 1914. Northern victory was the war that preserved the United States as one nation and broken the foundation of slavery that had separated the country from its beginning (James McPherson, 2013).
