The great problem of the Twentieth Century was the color line. W.E.B Du Bois has written about this color line to help readers better understand the struggle for African Americans. I have pinpointed four chapters from “The Soul of Black Folk,” that I feel demonstrate the difficulties with the color line, and relate to the forethought. I discuss Du Bois views of Booker T. Washington, poverty for African Americans. In addition, I discuss African American religion, and elaborate on the story of the black and white man who both pursues education.
When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their ideas and views are the things that will be addressed in this essay.
Many of the issues of the color line are a direct derivative of colonialism in the colonies. On one hand through the idea of the problem of the color line DuBois calls our attention to the uncultured imbalances of authority, capital, opportunity and access between whites and African Americans. It also nurtures Du Bois’ right to argue that the oppressed, of necessity, will rise up in confrontation. Certainly, he anticipated wars of emancipation like the riots in Wilmington more aggressive than the imperialist wars of conquest (which in a way is a direct imitation of the time of colonialism).
After slavery ended, many hoped for a changed America. However, this was not so easy, as slavery left an undeniable mark on the country. One problem ended, but new problems arose as blacks and whites put up “color lines” which led to interior identity struggles. These struggles perpetuated inequality further and led W. E. B. Du Bois to believe that the only way to lift “the Veil” would be through continuing to fight not only for freedom, but for liberty - for all. Others offered different proposals on societal race roles, but all recognized that “double consciousness” of both the individual and the nation was a problem that desperately needed to be solved.

Among W.E.B. Du Bois’ contributions to black liberation was his psycho- philosophical notion of double-consciousness, or twoness, which Du Bois used to explain African-American strife to his largely white readership. A contemporary of Du Bois, late 19th century poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, described by Cornell English professor George B. Hutchinson as “the poet laureate of black America,” depicted the African-American’s struggle in terms similar to Du Bois’. This paper analyzes Du Bois’ understanding of black twoness and then applies twoness’ alleged effects to Dunbar’s poetry, ultimately attempting to reveal Dunbar and Du Bois’ mutual conception of black bondage.

Even though the ideal of liberty demanded for its attainment powerful means, and even though Fifteenth Amendment gave them freedom, identity will hide and distinct the black community making white community resistant to the black problems and with their ignorance. Du Bois explains the tension between two different identities doesn’t stop at the looking at the problem itself he implements how African American community needs to realize that knowing where they stand and importance of becoming educated. Also, white community need to clearer perception of the African American is meaning of progress. It not only attempting to reach self-conscious after years of captivity, but also trying to merge two conflicting identities into one ultimately better one. Even though Du Bois was ahead of his time he knew the importance of stepping stone and construction of whole structure instead of just focusing on cultural itself. In the period after Reconstruction the position of African Americans in southern American society steadily deteriorated. After 1877 the possibilities of advancements for African Americans disappeared almost completely. African Americans experienced a loss of voting rights and political power created by methods of terrorization such as lynching. The remaining political and economic gains that were made during reconstruction were eventually whittled away by Southern legislation. By the 1900s African Americans had almost no access to political, social, or economic power. Shortly after this Jim Crow laws began to emerge, segregating blacks and whites. This dramatic transition from African American power to powerlessness after reconstruction gave birth to two important leaders in the African American community, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. Although these two remarkable men were both in search of a common goal, their roads leading to this goal were significantly different. This is most evident in the two most important documents of the men’s careers: Booker T. Washington’s, “1895 Atlanta Exposition Speech” and W.E.B. DuBois’ response to this, “The Souls of Black Folks.” These two men were both dedicated to solving the difficult problems African Americans experienced in the post reconstruction south. Both DuBois and Washington wanted economic prosperity for African Americans but they differed on what would be done to achieve this. Both men focused on education as a key to the improvement of black life but they differed on the form education should take. The true difference in these men’s extremely different routes to better the lives of African Americans after reconstruction was a product of their extremely different backgrounds. In this essay I will examine the documents, “1895 Atlanta Exposition Speech” by Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois’, “The Souls of Black Folks” in order to determine the paths that each of these men took towards the advancement of African Americans, and the reasons behind these methods.
Though each article has its differences in style, perspective, and concerns, all three reinforce the idea that race relations in the 1930s and 1940s, especially in the South, were in dire need of work. Whether the issue was how African Americans were viewed, treated, or thought of in American life, the main point that seems to come through in each author’s work is that on the whole, things needed to change from the prejudiced and stereotypical behaviors of southern America and, to a greater extent, the country as a whole. Race relations were not a high point in history, and it is a shame things did not get better sooner than they did. Du Bois, Wright, and Myrdal showed the state of the world after the Reconstruction era and before the Civil Rights movement, which was harsh and controversial yet had a big impact on American life and American history.
The differences of their philosophies were clearly shown in their writings—Booker T. Washington’s “Up from slavery” and Du Bois’s “The Souls of Black Folk”. Before we analyze the similarities and differences of both of the leaders, we have to look at their early life experiences as it can be an important factor on how and where they get their inspiration for their philosophies. Booker T. Washington was an influential leader during his time and a philosopher that always addressed the philosophy of self-help, racial unity and accommodation. The Souls is composed of essays by W.E.B Du Bois in the early 20th Centuries. "The Souls of Black Folk" was very significant work to African Americans, because of his courage to stand up for blacks.
