I elected to do my term paper on the sociological impact of nanotechnology and biotechnology (commonly called “bionics”) because of the vast potential for advances in medicine, space exploration and technology. These are but a few of the areas which will surely be affected by the development of new and never before imagined processes and engineered materials which have the power to change the way every aspect of one’s life is lived. I will generally focus on the Structural-Functional and Social-Conflict approaches for the majority of the paper, but will touch on some of the aspects as seen by the Symbolic-Interaction approach when considering the implications of the subject on society, as well.
First things first, what exactly are nanotechnology and biotechnology? There has been some less than mild discussion of late about what constitutes legitimate nanotechnology, and suffice it to say that it doesn’t include things like laundry detergents, chemical additives, makeup micro-beads or anything of the like that may be claimed by some companies that are looking for an advantage over their competitors. Also, neither of these growing scientific disciplines includes any of the many terrifying, often alien technologies that swarm and smother, seek and destroy, or otherwise attempt to eradicate the human race from the face of the earth, ad nauseam. Nanotechnology refers to a field of applied science and technology whose theme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecular scale, generally 100 nanometres or smaller, and the fabrication of devices or materials that lie within that size range.

However though, If regulated correctly by companies such as NanoSafe as well as the government nanotechnology can still be one of the biggest innovations in human history and change the path of this worlds future for the better.
Science that deals with study of materials or any particles that is so small and measured in nanometer scale is called “Nanoscience”. Study about very small particles and its chemical and physical changes at nanoscale is not an easy business. Nanotechnology studies the big picture of those small particles, manipulates them to advance new devices and materials. The name “nanotechnology” was created in year 1974 (Nowack & Bucheli, 2007). But the concept of manipulating Nano particles has been around for centuries mainly in crafting examples are 4th century Lycurgus cup, 13th-18th centuries Damascus saber blades and etc., (Miller et al.,2013). Introduction of nanotechnology was to attain multiple benefits to society in many areas like energy production and conservation, pollution clean-up and medicine. The danger that tags along with this benefiting science does need to be understood before their usage becomes prevalent. Environmental scientists who are concerned about health of organisms and hazard to environment are researching and accessing about toxicity, distribution and fate of the nanoparticles that is released into the environment.
According to the (National Nanotechnology Coordination Office) nanotechnology “is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the Nano scale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers.”
What is Nanotechnology? “Nanotechnology is the manipulation or self-assembly of individual atoms, molecules, or molecular clusters into structures to create materials and devices with new or vastly different properties. Nanotechnology can work from the top down (which means reducing the size of the smallest structures to the nanoscale… or the bottom up (which involves manipulating individual atoms and molecules into nanostructures and more closely resembles chemistry or biology)” (Joseph & Morrison, 2006, p.3, para. 2).

At the time, bigger was better to mass-produce this new up and coming “transportation technology”. Nanotechnology is a big buzz-word in the realms of science and technology at the moment, and the trend looks set to increase exponentially. In an earth that is full of cell phones, laptops, PC’s, palm pilots, flat screen televisions, I-pods, EZ pass, and many other gizmos and gadgets, it is hard to imagine our universe becoming even more high-tech. Biotechnology is a new emerging interdisciplinary branch of biology and chemistry. It is mainly associated with research and development. This branch is a combination of life science with technology. In the mid twentieth century, the basic research has been done in this fields and agriculture and now it is developing very fast due to ongoing world food security. This branch was started with innovation of fermentative microorganisms by Louis Pasteur - the father of biotechnology. Many years ago, people used biotechnology but were limited with resources and the new technology. They produced wines, beers, and cheese without giving a formal name “Biotechnology.” Today, many nations invest lots of money in medical research to find cure for different diseases and to solve environmental problems. Many pharmaceutical, therapeutics, and chemical companies such as BASF, Chelsea and Endo are centrally located in Charlotte, NC as well as variety of manufacture and research companies which are located in research triangle area. These companies are not only bringing local jobs and focusing on different sectors of the field but how are they helping our society from medical and environment perspective.
