The Social service profession has an increasingly high turnover rate that is close to over 30% according to Child Welfare Information Gateway. Why is the turnover/burnout rate so high for social work focusing on child welfare? This research paper will focus on answering the above question along with giving a brief history on the social work career. This paper will also contain information on what social workers do on a daily basis, the public perception of them while discussing the many division and salary of this profession. The profession and practice of social work is fairly new and it is said that it was developed from 3 strands. Within this career, one will be subject to make very hard and tough decisions that have the ability to change a person and/or their families lives. There isn’t one day that is the same in this profession. The stress of having such a big role to play wears down on the people who work this profession along with the people they help as well. All help that they do is good help even if it doesn’t appear to be. Working in a career like this does lead to high burnout and turnover rates with most people leaving this profession for good. Many states have tried to help make his situation better by lowering the case loads and raising up the salary. The negative perception that the media presents on social work persuade the general population which adds more stress to social workers.
