Bees are flying insects that are closely related to wasps and ants. Bees are know for there major role in pollination and producing honey and beeswax. Bees are apart of the superfamily apoidea or clade. There are almost 20,000 different species of bees in seven families. Bees are found in every continent except for Antarctica.
Bees have a life span of 1-10months. Some bees species including honey bees bumblebees and stingless bees live in colonies. Bees feed on nectar and pollen. The nectar and pollen contain proteins and a their nutrients. Bee pollination is important for plant reproduction. Bees can range from stingless bee to Megachile Pluto, the largest species of leaf cutter bee.
The most common bees in the bother hemisphere are the hail tidal or sweat bees, they are small and most times mistaken for flies or wasps. The vertebrate predators of bees are birds and insect predators are bee wolves and the dragonflies. Apiculture (beekeeping) is being practiced for years, since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greek. Bees also produce Royal jelly and propolis. Bees have appeared in various mythology and folklore. Bees differ from there closely related group, wasp by having branched or bristles, combs on the fore limbs for cleaning their antenna, limb structure and hind wings.
