The Slight Edge Main Takeaways I’ve never been the type of person to buy into, or even read, many self-help books; however, I really appreciated reading this book. The few previous experiences I’ve had with them seemed very hard to apply to my life. What I think this book did differently was show that although you won’t see results right away, in whatever it is you do, if you do the little things right (or wrong) every day, you will see positive (or negative) results over time. I think one of the most powerful moments of the book was when he mentioned how many people today want to go from planting, directly to harvesting, instead of planting, cultivating, and then harvesting. I see this in my own life as a referee in Junior hockey. I feel as if I am always striving for that level, and sometimes want to be working that next level, even if I am not ready for it. This example of not …show more content…
I really liked his statement that, “Luck is preparedness that eventually creates opportunity.” This stuck with me because I thought about how in officiating, many people get opportunities on higher level games if someone gets hurt. The people that make the most out of those opportunities are the ones who are the most prepared. Many of the officials who do well on these games tend to stay at the higher level at which they were given an opportunity. Perhaps the most powerful takeaway I had from the book would be the concept of being the average of your five best friends in terms of income, health, finances and many other aspects of life. I’ve never thought about the fact that the people you spend the most time with can really influence the way I carry myself, what I say, how I think, and many other aspects of my life. When I took a step back and looked at whom I spent the most time with, and then looked at the median income of the job I want in the future, the income was $3,000 off. This proved to me that this was a fairly accurate
I believe the most important concept that I gained from reading the book was to remain faithful, in good times and in bad. Walking blindly can be very terrifying, but God always has a plan for each and every one of us. At times, the plan remains unseen, and that should not deter or slow me on the path that my heart is yearning
I have only read four books my entire life for school, but this is one is the best I have read. There were numerous things that I learned from the book. The one that hit me the hardest was it's hard to see people living in shame because they can cover it up really well, almost like it doesn’t bother them at all. I grew up in a middle class family and simply didn't understand what it meant to be so broke that you are ashamed to be around people who have money. The thought never crossed my mind, ever.
After reading this book I think the difference it makes in life is too continuing go for greatness. No matter how bad it may seem right now in life Wes Moore proved that you can still become something great in life. A quote I took from this book was “Failing doesn't make us a failure. But not trying to do better, to be better, does make us fools.” (Moore) I know people who have given up on a lot of things in life because of bumps in the road. I would say this book changes how I look at the lives of others, but in two different ways. One way would be that be can change their life arounds even if they grew up that way. The second would be that sometimes you need to break off from people that might not help you grow in
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
Other than how this book personally encouraged me and discouraged me, it was eye opening to see such a coincidence of birthdates among all-star hockey players and how Bill Gates just happened to be born in the wake of computer technology. It is also very shocking to see the racial demographics behind plane crashes and the relationship between math, rice, and Asian people. I am glad that I was able to read this book because despite the limits it places on success, it provides a better understanding of the possible reasons why some people become outliers while other remain average.
This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
I think that the most important thing I got from this book, is the relacom concepts. I found if I translate almost every line of a scene, the intentions reveal themselves, and the delivery of line, is much more convincing. Another concept that I have always wanted to express, but couldn’t find the words, is the idea of ethno-centricity. I can’t remember which chapter it was in, but it explained that everyone thinks their own world is the center, and to properly build a character, sometimes you must lose this ethno-centiricity.
I think students should read this book because it teaches about friendship. They give you an idea on what you should do and what not to do. Friends don’t give out other people's secrets.
Self-help books today is a multi-billion dollar industry because they are able to attract readers who seek to self-improve with the promise of delivering recipe's to success and self improvement and this has kept readers reading in vain. Self-help books attract vulnerable people by appealing to their weaknesses, using significant titles like "How to think like a Millionaire, with subtitles, The Success Secrets of Ten millionaires asking Do you really want to be a millionaire? Wealth is not relied upon luck; this remarkable book has captured the essence that has led to success. Now you have the opportunity of achieving your own dreams." (Poissant) We are talkin...
Another part of the book that influences me is the focus part he tells of how a British politician by the name of Winston Churchill focused on his goal and completed it. Its influences me to find a goal and focus on it till I succeed, this can be something small as catching a bass
The script of On the Verge is one of great abstractness. The play itself is quite funny and light at face value, with yetis and cannibals making appearances. Beyond these lighthearted instances, the script takes deeper meaning with references to woman’s rights and character symbolism.
The biggest insight I got in this book is about relationships and love. This whole point will be focused on the tenth Tuesday with Morrie, where they talk about marriage. Morrie goes on to explain how our generation is with love and relationships. He explains the real realities of it all.
I feel that I didn't really learn too much from this book. But what I did learn is how much witnessing a crime or knowing about a crime can affect your life. I never knew what kind of power that the mob can have over people's lives. It was interesting to learn this, and it makes me feel lucky ...
One of the main points that I think comes out of this book, is one
Have you ever walked by the “Self-Help” section in the bookstore? I have. What’s more, I even bought quite a few books that assured to help me lose weight, think positive and grow rich. Even though they are very inspiring and exciting to read, as my experience showed, it did not go further than that. Dr. Jim Taylor questions the extent of reliance on the self-help books for personal improvements: People are still looking for honest to goodness ways to change. let’s be really frank here, as George Carlin has also observed, “If you’re reading it in a book, folks, it ain’t self-help. It’s help.” But help is okay too as long as it actually, well, helps. Unfortunately, change has gotten a bad rap because of the self-help manufacturing; it has become a parody of itself and many of its leading supporters… (“Personal Growth: Is the Self-Help Industry a Freud?”). The self-help industry is in high demand because it privileges to provide the greatest value of personal growth and learning to individuals beyond a college education.
