In the 19th century, they were having an internal war. Free the slaves or keep them enslaved. The slaves and the north wanted them to be free, but the South and slave owners did not want them free. The slaves wanted to be free, do they do it peacefully or aggressively. People might disagree because the are slave owners and the slave do all the work for them. Of course they do not want them to be free. The slaves make them more money. Douglass continues to describe the severity of the manipulation of Christianity. Slave owners use generations of slavery and mental control to convert slaves to the belief God sanctions and supports slavery. They teach that, “ man may properly be a slave; that the relation of master and slave is ordained by God” (Douglass 13). In 1863 Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves” within rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free”. “The right to have a slave implies the right in some one to make a slave; that right must be equal and mutual, and this would resolve society into a state of perpetual war.” Senator William Steward, an anti-slavery supporter, issued this claim in his “There is a Higher Law than the Constitution” speech. Steward, like all abolitionist, viewed all of man as equals. This equality came from the “higher law” that is the Bible. Since all men were created by God then all men were equals in God’s eyes. Abolitionist believed that whites had no more right to make a slave out of a African American than the African American had to make a slave out of a white man.

In his book The Columbian Orator in 1797, Caleb Bingham refers to a conversation between a slave and a master. In part of the dialogue, the master says that “it is in the order of providence that one man should become subservient to another.” The slave responds that “the robber who puts a pistol to your breast may make just the same plea. Providence gives him a power over your life and property.” This dialogue states an essential concept that the slavery is not natural because that is just a kind of power to make that happen just like a person who puts a gun to somebody’s breast.

What is freedom? This question is easy enough to answer today. To many, the concept of freedom we have now is a quality of life free from the constraints of a person or a government. In America today, the thought of living a life in which one was “owned” by another person, seems incomprehensible. Until 1865 however, freedom was a concept that many African Americans only dreamed of. Throughout early American Literature freedom and the desire to be free has been written and spoken about by many. Insight into how an African-American slave views freedom and what sparks their desire to receive it can be found in any of the “Slave Narratives” of early American literature, from Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustav Vassa, the African published in 1789, to Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself which was published in 1845. Phillis Wheatley’s poetry and letters and Martin R. Delany’s speech Political Destiny of the Colored Race in the American Continent also contain examples of the African-American slaves’ concepts of freedom; all the similarities and differences among them.
We are Northern Abolitionist seeking request from all Northerners to come together and help free negroes from the atrocious acts of the Southerners. As you all may have heard, a compromise had just been passed yesterday called The Fugitive Slave Law, where the government to heavily assist slaveowners recovering runaway negroes. This has made it harder for us to free slaverunners due to government having more weapons and technology than anyone else. There will be penalties given if caught assisting or hiding negroes. We have been assisted runaway slaves back to 1786, when the first organized group, Quakers, was assembled to help assist slaves escaped. We help free negroes because Southerner slaveowners are inhumane and unfair to negroes.

Morgan argues that many historians seem to ignore writing about the early development of American freedom simply because it was shaped by the rise of slavery. It seems ironic that while one group of people is trying to break the mold and become liberated, that same group is making others confined and shattering their respectability.
