The stars shone brightly above the port village of Mercedi, reflecting in the harbor as they traveled their path across the midnight sky. Schools of colorful fish swam through streaks of pale moonlight beneath the calm waves. Small, wooden rowboats parted the gentle waters carrying flame-flickering lanterns held by grinning villagers. Beyond the boats,toward the horizon, loud cracks made way for brilliantly colored explosions, erupting in different shapes and designs. The floating audience oohed and aahed at the spectacular show. All this, Alexandria Klein could see from the only window of Mrs. Malum’s Home for Abandoned and Lonely Children. Malum’s silver-buckled black heels made small dents in the splintery, wood floor. She had a tall stick-like figure which held up a head and face, permanently plastered with the same disgusted expression. A tight bun of gray hair perched at the crown of her head matched the piercing eyes behind the spectacles dangling at the tip of her crooked nose. Tucked into a gray, wool skirt that reached halfway down her shins, was a black sweater that seemed much too big for her thin, frail body.
