A View from the Bridge is written by Arthur Miller. Miller became interested in the work and lives of the communities of dock workers and Longshoremen of New York’s Brooklyn Harbor, and where he had himself previously worked. In 1947, he was told an interesting story about another longshoreman in the area who had snitched to the Immigration Bureau on his own relatives. The Longshoreman was attempting to prevent the marriage between one of the brothers and his niece. Eight years later, in 1955, A View from the Bridge, based on the story of that same Longshoreman, was produced. Miller intended for the play to be a Greek tragedy.
The play tells the story of Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman working in the New York docks. His wife, Beatrice’s cousins seek refuge as illegal immigrants from Italy. Trouble begins when his niece, Catherine becomes attracted to the younger of the two immigrants, Rodolfo and Eddie’s desires for his niece drives him to his own destruction. The play is set in New York in the 1950s in an Italian immigrant community. This essay will explore the different meanings of the title and how it is significant.
The bridge is a metaphor. A bridge connects two places together but keeps them separate. It shows you ‘a’ view from where you are, you can see in front of you and behind you. It is the bridge in New York which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, two different communities which are connected but are kept apart.
The characters: Eddie, Catherine, Beatrice, Marco, Rodolfo and Alfieri make bridges or connections between other characters. Catherine is trying to build bridges; her growing up is a bridge as well. For example, the audience sees Catherine crossing the bridge from a girl to a woman. This is shown by t...

In conclusion, the effective title of the play ‘A View from the Bridge’ is significant as it gives different views to people as if the characters stepped on the bridge. I believe that the main reason for the naming of the play as ‘A View from the Bridge’ is the obvious metaphor of Arthur Miller’s perspective. The play shows us the Italian and American way of life and a bridge between characters. Alfieri is in many ways like Arthur Miller, when he first heard the tale of the longshoreman, he is the teller of an incredible story that he cannot change. Arthur Miller demonstrates life and corruption on the docks and streets in the Italian-American community. The area can be viewed from the bridge, and as the title says ‘a’ view, it is like Arthur Miller showing his objective view and perspective of the play.
The film tells two distinct stories. The first story is a light hearted ethnic comedy about the growing friendship between an Italian American (Bruno, a man with little positive to say about illegal immigrants finds himself working with one in this film) and a Mexican immigrant (Ignacio) both struggling with their co-dependency for each other and the stronger need for a paycheck. The second story tells us about just how uncertain the life of a migrant worker can be.
In the essay “A View From the Bridge” by Cherokee McDonald, descriptive words are used to describe the little boy fishing and the fish he caught. All this happened on a little bridge, but I bet it is a moment that this guy will not soon forget. “... As I neared the crest, I saw the kid.”
This whole play by Arthur Miller shows how our community will turn on each other to save ourselves no matter if it’s right or wrong and it’s true in our society today. It also shows how a good man regained his happiness and holiness by standing up for what’s right against the lies and sacrificed himself for the truth.
Within A View from the Bridge and Ethan Frome the main protagonists are tragic figures. The origin of a tragedy comes from Greece, where the basis of the idea was a drama in which the protagonist is overcome by some superior force or extreme circumstance; this usually resulted in either disaster or death. As is true to most Greek tragedies the ending of the shown before the downfall itself. Most victims of tragedy were written to be of a high stature such as royalty, yet both Ethan Frome and Eddie Carbone were ordinary men who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Arthur Miller said in his famous essay ""Tragedy of the Common Man", Arthur Miller states, "I believe that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in the highest sense that kings were."₅ In both texts, both Ethan Frome and Eddie Carbone reactions are determined by themselves as a character with the external factors acting as a catalyst to initiate their downfall.
The first path it symbolizes is the crossing of many individuals from countryside to the city, in their hope to become wealthy. However these men are tricked to go over the bridge because they do not see the terrible factories which hide behind them. The other symbol of the bridge is that it is inviting the workers to come back to nature and leave the factories behind. The Romantics enjoyed nature and wanted other people to come back and be humbled by it. The bridge plays a pivotal role in this

Reading and understanding literature is not as easy as it sounds. Being able to dissect each piece of information and connect it to the overall theme of the story takes lots of rereading and critical thinking. Reading the story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” takes lots of critical thinking and understanding the literature in a different point of view than the average reader would. The theme of this particular story quickly came to mind after initially concluding the reading, the author is trying to convey that nobody can escape death and how thoughts in the mind are so substantial in the consciousness that it can take over the reality. The author comes to this theme by incorporating specific literary elements such a symbol, irony, and narration. These are important because they make up the theme by bringing the necessary elements together.
In the time of William Shakespeare where courtship and romance were often overshadowed by the need to marry for social betterment and to ensure inheritance, emerges a couple from Much Ado About Nothing, Hero and Claudio, who must not only grow as a couple, who faces deception and slander, but as individuals. Out of the couple, Claudio, a brave soldier respected by some of the highest ranked men during his time, Prince Don Pedro and the Governor of Messina, Leonato, has the most growing to do. Throughout the play, Claudio’s transformation from an immature, love-struck boy who believes gossip and allows himself to easily be manipulated is seen when he blossoms into a mature young man who admits to his mistakes and actually has the capacity to love the girl he has longed for.

In 1872, Charles Crocker, a railroad entrepreneur, called for a bridge that connected the Golden Gate Strait. The strait, approximately 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, is the entrance to San Francisco Bay, which is in California, from the Pacific Ocean. By 1916, Michael M. O'Shaughnessy, a San Francisco City Engineer, was asked by city officials to see if it was possible to build a bridge that crossed the strait. While most engineers claimed that a bridge was not able to be built and that it would cost about $100 million, Joseph Baermann Strauss claimed that a bridge would be easily built and would only cost about $25 to $30 million. After the long process of having the bridge design approved for constructing, on January 5, 1933, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge had begun (“Golden Gate Bridge Research Library”). The main constructors included Joseph Baermann Strauss, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis. Strauss had hired Irving Morrow to design small features for the bridge like pedestrian walkways and streetlamps. Morrow also made the bridge look luxurious by using a style called art deco (“Irving Morrow” and “Art Deco”). Since Morrow was to design the Bridge, he knew that it would play a significant role on its display in regards to its surroundings. As of today, “the color blends perfectly with the changing season tints of the spans’ natural setting against the San Francisco skyline and the Marin hills” (“Golden Gate Bridge Research Library”). Meanwhile, Charles Ellis was the engineering expert. He was later accused by Strauss of wasting money and time by working on equations of forces at the Golden Gate Bridge. Ellis was then told not to go back to construct the bridge. Ellis could not drop out of the project because he w...
