The Shark Swimmers Essay
In the story, “The Shark Swimmers,” starts with how most kids are when they are young. The three boys are innocent just going to their favorite show on the beach admiring the cutest girl in their school. The author, Melissa Fraterrigo, is known for many other books including her novel Glory Days (Melissa). She is also known for her short story collection The Longest Pregnancy (Melissa). Her fiction and nonfiction has appeared in more than forty literary journals and anthologies from Shebnandoah and The Massachusetts Review to storySouth, and Notre Dame Review (Melissa).
The main characters in this story are, Brad, who we find out very soon is head over heels for Mariona, who is the second main character and the best shark swimmer and the cutest girl in their school. Although all of them are in love with Mariona you can tell Brad is in love with her the most because in the first interaction between Brad and Mariona he says, “Does this mean you want to grab a burger with me? (Fraterrigo 5). This comes right after Mariona says, “A beautiful woman will fall in love with you” (Fraterrigo 5). There are two supporting characters in this story named Tim and Derrick. We don’t get to know much about them other than Tim’s parents are about to get

divorced which ends up not happening at first and Derrick is told he is to invent a new car, which this is all told by Mariona. This story mainly takes place on the beach at the Shark Swimmers show and at the boardwalk on the beach as found out throughout the story. Mariona is a part of her parent’s shark swimmers show however, she wants to quit and become a fortune teller, which is why she predicted all of this for Brad, Tim, and Derrick. As we find out further in the story she is a pretty good fortune teller. Just days after Mariona told Tim his fortune the guys asked him if his parents decided to get divorced and he told them that, “…. the divorce papers had been put away and that his parents had decided to remain together” (Fraterrigo 6). After this happened the boys became Mariona’s biggest fans. They soon realized that Mariona was dissatisfied with her life as a shark swimmer and dreamed of a life where she worked on land. One day they were talking to Dana, another classmate of theirs, who told them Mariona would draw hearts on her binders and she said that, “She would line the outside of the heart with a thick band or add lacy trimmings.
She always added M + J.” (Fraterrigo 6). Knowing this all the boys thought she had a boyfriend and Brad was the one that took this the hardest. This is the start of the downfall of Brad. Brad had been devastated with this news and even said, “Damn her” (Fraterrigo 8). One day Brad had snuck off one day without telling the rest of the guys where he was going so they followed him to see what he was doing. They followed him all the way to this house, which ended up being Mariona’s
house. They saw Mariona’s mother answer the door and, “she scooped Brad into her arms and we watched him kiss her, his hands playing with the hem of her dress” (Fraterrigo 9). They were in shock at what they just saw and wondered when Brad had meet her mother or when this all started, however they were also impressed. I have two theories on why this happened: either he was doing this as a way to get back at Mariona or one day he went there looking for her and her mother caught feelings for like her husband was not giving her attention anymore. They wanted to ask Brad a million questions but the decided to keep this a secret. They also wondered why this was happening because Mariona’s parents were still married. Weeks later Mariona had quit swimming in the show and her mother had announced that she was pregnant. The boys could not help but think about what they saw and that there could be a link between this pregnancy and Brad. At this point Mariona was just in a T-shirt and shorts at the showing carrying buckets of fish and watching the show like everyone else. I think that when Mariona found out she was pregnant she saw it as a way out of this life she did not want. Mariona’s mother decided to have a water birth in the ocean and they made it happen at the same time as a Saturday show. On the day of the birth Brad was acting very weird that day saying that swimming with the sharks was “… nothing special” and “Anyone can do it” (Fraterrigo 11). When Mariona’s mother gave birth, they released the sharks and suddenly Brad ran to the water to swim with the sharks causing everyone to go crazy. The doctor dropped the baby, and everyone rushed to save Brad and the baby. The baby ended up being stillborn and it was already dead when it was birthed. “Brad was fined for obstructing the performance and was forbidden from attending future shows” (Fraterrigo 13). This all happen as they were Juniors in high school and after this incident Brad started smoking cigarettes. One of the nights after this happened they saw Brad at the boardwalk and “He offered us cigarettes from his own pack, but only Derrick was brave enough to try one” (Fraterrigo 14). This is probably how Brad numbed some of the pain he felt when he knew he could not be with Mariona. The boys still wondered if the baby was Brad’s however, no one wanted to ask because Brad did not know that they knew about him and Mariona’s mother. Eventually, Mariona started performing again when they were all going into their senior year. I am sure she did this to make her parents feel better about the whole situation. Later in the summer they snuck into Mariona’s final show not knowing what would happen in that show. They still do not know how it happen a few think that Mariona purposely threw herself off the shark however, others believe that she misplaced her foot. Since she was a very good fortune teller I think she knew this was going to happen so that is why she tried to defend herself right away trying to change the inevitable. Either way she fell of the shark and tried to get away and even punched the shark right under the eye. “It only took one bite, one chunk of flesh before releasing its jaw and leaving Mariona in the water, inhaling frantically on her back” (Fraterrigo 16-17). After that happened everyone found out that Mariona had lost her left foot up to her ankle. “Later that summer, we found out Brad impregnated a girl one town over” (Fraterrigo 17). He more than likely started sleeping around when he knew about Mariona and her boyfriend which is a normal reaction for some guys. As you can see finding out about Mariona and her boyfriend earlier in the story was definitely the fall of Brad from being innocent. One day the Dad of the girl came to Brad demanding he marry her and after that he left town, and no one ever saw him again. Which I believe did not really surprise anyone that was looking at the path he was taking in his life. For years after Mariona lost her foot she would still show up to the shows with her boyfriend wearing a prosthetic foot. She also opened up her own fortune telling booth however, the boys never visited her there. The shark swimmers show was never the same after Mariona’s final show and eventually her parents became too old to do the show anymore and they stopped performing. Eventually, Mariona moved away with her boyfriend and the boys can only imagine that, “Mariona has her own little girl now and that she takes her swimming in the ocean and together they float on their backs looking up at the sky” (Fraterrigo 17). Mariona’s final show will always remain in the boy’s minds as they sat there and just watched what happened to her. “We watched the ambulances scream on the sand, saw her mother hysterically wailing as her husband carried Mariona out of the water and onto the land, his daughter’s blood cloaking his arm and torso, streaks dribbling from his swimsuit down his own legs” (Fraterrigo 17-18). They will never forget Mariona’s ghostly white face as she had already fainted. They were sitting there with photos of Mariona for her to sign but when it all happened they no longer cared about keeping her photo safe and almost lost them to the wind. This was a great story and it really kept you involved the whole time not knowing what was going to happen next. It shows what love can do to someone when they find out that they cannot have the one they have fallen for. Once Brad found out she had a boyfriend it made him go into a bad spiral that messed up his life and turned him from an innocent boy to a delinquent. This story also shows us how life can change in a split second as it did for Mariona’s mother, who lost her baby to death, and Mariona, who lost her foot to the shark. Overall, I would recommend this story to anyone that loves short stories with a true meaning to the story.
As Stephen Covey once declared, “Just as we develop our physical muscles through overcoming opposition- such as lifting weight- we develop our character muscles by overcoming challenges and adversity.” This may seem like no sweat, but in reality it is laborious to do. Nevertheless, there are many people who embody this quote in our everyday lives and even in literature. The short story The Truth About Sharks by Joan Bauer, depicts such a person. In this anecdote, the experience that the protagonist, Beth faced, taught her to stand up for herself and therefore feel empowered. She went from a sullen teenager who was unable to stand up to her uncle and one who felt insecure in the shadow of her cousin, to someone with the confidence to rise above. The Truth About Sharks portrays a vital change that happened to Beth as a result of her being falsely accused of shoplifting and the challenges she faced to clear her name. This article renders a dynamic change that occurred in the main character, Beth who demonstrated the theme stand up for what you think is right.
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
The novel "I'm Not Scared" explores the playful and interesting world of childhood through the eyes of a nine year old kid. In the hot, dry summer of 1978, Michele, the main character, and his friends have nothing better to do than play new games and dares. Their small town Aqua Treverse only occupies four houses. Michele and his friends usually ride on their bikes across the deserted countryside, while the adults stay indoors shielding from the enormous heat. This gives the children the freedom to do anything they want.
The main characters are Vera, Michael, and Ferdinand Vanek. The play begins with Ferdinand entering the party of Vera and Michael. As the story line progresses, Vera and Michael continue describing their many material possessions and showing off their supposed glamour. All throughout the commentary on their accolades, they also openly criticize Ferdinand in every aspect of his life. They claim to do so only because they like him and because he is their best friend. In the end, Ferdinand begins inching towards the door, and Vera and Michael start to go hysterical at the thought of Ferdinand leaving. Finally, when he sits back down, Vera and Michael resume their "normal" chatter.
John Cheever in “The Swimmer” uses much symbolism for his character and the voyage that this story must take. Neddy Merrill, the speaker of “The Swimmer” represents in the beginning of the piece the model of the American male of the time period in which the story was written. As the story progresses, however, symbolism is substituted for references to the nature of Cheever’s character. To be more specific, Neddy Merrill is the perfect example of the wealthy, suburban man of high status. As the story unravels, however he becomes none of those things and instead undergoes a transformation and tragedy that give insight, through symbolism and surrealism, the American’s male’s conception of life and legacy.
An English naturalist Charles Darwin (1802-1882) developed a theory of biological evolution. He studied variation in plants and animals during his five years’ voyage around the world in the 19th century. Darwin studied hundreds of species, which he researches variations between locations. His theory states that all species of organism arise and develop through natural selection. Natural selection is the process of organisms that adapt to their surrounding environment, which tend to survive and produce more offspring. Killer whales are remarked to have evolutionary links from land dwelling organisms, millions of years ago. This paper will display the evolution and natural selection of the killer whale.
The main characters in this book are Jennie, Paul, Emily, Hillary, Jared, and Ansley. All the main characters are juniors in high school. Jennie is part of the awesome threesome. She always gets good grades on tests even if she doesn’t study. People envy her for that. Paul is also know as Paul Classified because no one knows anything about him, they don’t even know his middle name. Jennie likes Paul and she flirts with him all the time. Emily and Hillary are part of the awesome threesome too. Jared and Ansley are boyfriend and girlfriend. They both dislike Jennie because she is so popular and intelligent.
The definition of story is “an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment,” and both of these novels take this term to heart. Using their stories to hide their pain and emotions, it is easier to come up with a majestic tale then to tell the cold hard truth. In Life of Pi the author says, “That’s what fiction is about, isn't it, the selective transforming of reality? The twisting of it to bring out its essence,” (vi) and that is something both Edward Bloom and Pi Patel doesn’t. Despite Life of Pi and Big Fish’s obvious differences, they have one thing in common they both revolve around the topic of story telling. The novels are about struggling to come to terms with reality and being stuck
“The water was crystal-clear and calm. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling with them, relaxing on my board with my right hand on the nose of the board and my left arm dangling in the cool water.” She writes in her book ‘Soul Surfer’. “I remember thinking, ‘I hope the surf picks up soon…’ when suddenly there was a flash of gray.” Bethany Hamilton’s life changed forever Halloween morning of 2003. The picture perfect morning was put to a halt when a fourteen foot tiger shark severed Bethany’s arm below her shoulder. At just thirteen years old, her dreams of becoming a professional surfer were seemed to be ripped from her grasp. Bethany pushed through her hard times with her strong, resilient ambition to do what
Based on an actual incident in 1853, Ivan Doig’s The Sea Runners chronicles about the escape of four Swedish indentured servants from a fur trade fort in 1850’s Russian-America. As the story unfolds and in order to seek opportunity in the new world, many Europeans, including four Swedes sign on to an indenture with the Russian-American Company (RAC) in New Archangel located in what is modern-day Sitka, Alaska. After two years, the four Swedes have enough of it and plot their escape. After stealing supplies and a native canoe, they set off for the U.S. city of Astoria, 1000 uncharted miles south. They face many adversaries, including storms, rocks, angry Russians and Koloshes (name given by the Russians to the indigenous people along the coast).
There is a large cast of characters including the priest Sarastro (a very serious, proselytizing basso), the Queen of the Night (a mean, angry, scheming coloratura), and her daughter, the beautiful and courageous Pamina. There is the handsome hero, Tamino, on the quintessential road trip, and his cohort in misadventure, the bird seller, Papageno. Papageno ultimately finds his Papagena (who starts out disguised as a crone), Tamino ultimately wins Pamina, Sarastro presumably wins a passle of converts, and everyone goes home humming the catchy Mozart melodies. It is all presented in a plot complicated by a dragon, a threesome of warbling ladies in service to the Queen of the Night, another threesome of boy-angels, even a bully - Monostatos, guard for the Queen. It is lightened by such elements as locked lips, charmed animals, and, of course, a magic flute.

Killer whales live in almost every ocean. Though they are often found in cold, coastal waters, killer whales can be found from the polar regions to the Equator. The killer whale is a carnivor. These different groups may prey on different animals and use different techniques to catch them. Killer whales hunt in deadly pods which consist of family groups of up to 40 individuals. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even other whales. There are two kinds of Killer whales, the resident and the transient. Resident pods prefer fish, while transient pods catch marine mammals. All pods use effective, cooperative hunting techniques that some liken to the behavior of wolf packs . While hunting like wolves, killer whales could surround a school of salmon and even overwhelm a larger whale (National Geographic). One killer whale was even reported to have even traveled some 177 km up the Columbia River in search of fish In the Arctic, killer whales eat about 67% fishe, 27% marine mammals and 6% squid. In the Bering Sea near Alaska, they eat about 65% fishe, 20% squids and 15% marine mammals (Marine Bio).
The main characters are Sandy, Danny, Danny’s greaser gang and Sandy’s friends, the Pink Ladies. The story is about a girl and a guy who meet over summer break, and fall in love. Then
My toes burrowed into the damp sand and I was relieved to realize that the water was warmer than I had expected. As I stood there and breathed in, deeply, the moist salty air, allowing my heart to fill with the vigor of the ocean and releasing the thoughts of the boy from my past with each exhale, a ball hit my feet and a man ran to get it as his friend yelled “you’re welcome!.” Were they trying to get my attention? I thought as I simply walked away avoiding eye contact with the man who collected the ball. I wandered along the water’s border allowing the water to cooly kiss my feet. the water hit my feet. I smiled as I looked at all of the young surfers attempting to catch the two foot waves. I amused myself by pondering what their future would look like and if I was witnessing the start of a surfing legend. I envied their potential, the years they would have to master their art to acquire their dreams, whatever they may be.
