The Seventh Man’s Guilt In Murakami’s “The Seventh Man” the seventh man tells the tragic tale of how, at the age of ten years old, he and his best friend, K, came face to face with a tsunami. In that moment, the seventh man is able to save himself, only to see his best friend swallowed by the ginormous wave. (“The Seventh Man”). The narrator blames himself for the loss of K. Over the years, he has been forced to relive this trauma in his nightmares repeatedly, so much so, that it has affected him his whole life. He experiences a type of survivor guilt in which he blames himself for the death of K even though it is not necessarily his fault. Although he feels guilty, K’s death is not the seventh man’s fault.
