A) Overview of the book
Jeff Janssen and Greg Dale are peak performance coaching, they are highly credible and respected in the field of coaching. The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches explains a new style of coaching. Jeff and Greg talk with a bunch of current and former successful coaches to develop this new style of coaching. Coaching in the past has been fear and intimidating focused. The style they discovered is credible coaching, no longer centered on fear and intimidating but focused around trust and relationships. Credible coaching allows one to get the most out of their athletes while still being respected as the coach. Coach Krzyzewski was one the the coaches interviewed and he hit the nail into the coffin when he said,"Coaching is about relationships. It goes way beyond X’s and O's. You have to create an environment of trust among your staff and athletes. Without trust, you have nothing. If you do have trust, you will be able to accomplish great things."
Credible coaching in no long a secret, the book it explains the seven basic strategies needed to become a credible coach. These strategies and componets will impact your coaching in a lot of ways, it not only helps your team be successful but it helps you to not get burnt out, it will bring back the enjoyment you once felt for the game. The process to becoming a more credible coach is not easy; one must complete a self-evaluation and assess strengths and weaknesses. This part can be hard because of pride but one must be able see his own weaknesses and strengths to become a credible coach. ...o know me as a person, to understand me and know there was more to me than just sports. The caring element to credible coaching is by far, in my opinion, the most important aspect of credible coaching. We all grow old and phase out of our sports, but relationships last forever.
B) how this book affects your coaching endeavor
Not only will I apply these seven secrets to my future coaching endeavors but I will apply them in my everyday life. I believe that these strategies are important for any type of relationship whether that be at work or with your family. I will now look at the big picture and realize that these athletes someday will have to move on and they will need the necessary skills to be able to survive. I want to be the coach where past players can still have a relationship with me and respect me. By applying these components I believe I can achieve that.

As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. Personal coaching as defined by Biswas – Diener (2009) is a professional relationship in which coaches work with clients to facilitate experiential learning and improve functioning and performance, of in the context of working toward specific goals. Some core assumptions that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop a focus on mutually agreed upon goals, and an understanding that the relationship is relatively equal and collaborative as stated by the author (2009). Some techniques that are in seen during a coaching process include but are not limited to the following list as provided by the author: active listening, the use of powerful questions which are based on broad and open-ended to raise awareness of the client to take stock of their values and resources, cognitive tools are used to reframe negative interpretations, use different types of encouragement tools, and that clients are held accountable (2009). The topics that will be discussed in this paper include what skills do I current have, which skills need to be develop, my comfort level and effectiveness, coaching approaches (including methods and tools), any challenges about coaching and finally how coaching relates to my professional career.
Throughout the book “Leading with the Heart,” I read about prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and situational leadership. He recommended that leaders begin with the trait theory when beginning the selection process when starting his or her organization. In chapter one and as well as chapter two, Coach K refers to coachable players. Meaning, players or members that do not mind being taught and learning; willing to take a back seat to someone else in charge. Establish right away in the first meeting the only rule for the team: “Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if it is detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program (Krzyzewski, 2000, p.4). He reiterates that leaders must be very selective in this process, because the people you select represent you as the leader, and your company. In some cases leaders must sacrifice some skill and talent for people who have outstanding character. “Character and respect will outlast talent when talent can’t see past themselves.” Krzyzewski mentions that he will sign a kid who has the character of a leader and train them to gain the skill necessary down the road. A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). A big question in today’s society is “Will a coaching philosophy improve performance or provoke a lifelong commitment to sport, or develop character, etc.?” I believe that all can be affected by a coach’s philosophy and the way that coach does things. Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
