The story I read is called “The Scarlet Ibis”. The story starts off with the main character describing how his life has changed now that his little brother has past. The places from his past are dying away. From the events from the past he will always remember Doodle.
The main part the the story was about the older brother’s story. It was about his time with Doodle from the beginning to the last. During the story the brother and Doodle surprise their parents with the fact that Doodle has changed; when an injured bird flies near the house. The family goes to check it out, when they saw it up in a tree it fell to their feet and died. The name of the bird was Scarlet Ibis.

play with and have fun as kids. After a while the brother became tired of dragging Doodle around in a go-cart all the time, so he decided to teach him how to walk. Throughout the story doodle improves more as time moves on. The characters in the story are, the dad, mom, aunt, the brother, and William Armstrong(Doodle).
I see the main character as the two brother. The setting for the brothers takes place outside in various locations. While with the whole family it takes place within the house or outside next to the tree.
The conflict in the story was when from time to time Doodle refused or gave up on learning how to stand and walk on his own. Also from all the hard work and time the brother put into helping doodle to learn new things to live a better life.
I was surprised on how the story ended, and in my opinion I thought it was messed up that when the storm hit, and all that hard work the older brother leaves Doodle behind to get out of the storm but then stops because he can’t hear Doodle. That's when he goes back to fine Doodle laying under a bush. When he goes to talk to him he doesn’t respond,finally he goes to pick up Doodle’s head and sees that Doodle is bleeding from his mouth.Ending with the brother weeping and crying as he shelters Doodle from the rain. I think that the brother helps Doodle back to the house and then Doodle dies from his
injuries. Overall with all the hard work and dedication the older brother puts into helping Doodle to live a better life he leaves him behind and he gets severely injured and ends up dying. Overall I really enjoyed this story, I feel like this story was based on a true story because how realistic it sounded.

Doodle was like a shooting star in the night sky. He was rare and special. Doodle was a unique person that was different and didn’t fit in. Doodle was born sick and no one thought he would live, but he did end up living and his brother spent much of his time helping Doodle become stronger and learn to walk. Over time in the story Doodle got stronger, but in the end he eventually died. In “The Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst uses creative symbols such as the color red, the scarlet ibis bird, and the seasons to represent the life of Doodle.
Doodle and Simon have many similarities. They both have heart conditions and have to adjust to their lives but that is really the only similarity. In the movie Simon Birch by Mark Steve Johnson, the character Simon never has a completely normal life because of his disability. In the book “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Doodle never came close to normal because of his heart condition. Doodle and Simon have similarities but are different in many ways.

In conclusion, Brother shows his self-interest in how he treats his younger brother. He treats his younger brother, Doodle, as something to ‘fix’ and he cannot accept his brother as he is. When Doodle finally learns to walk, Brother’s selfish need for a more ‘ideal’ little brother is not satisfied for long. Soon he demands a little brother who can run, jump, climb, swim, swing on vines, and row a boat. When he gives Doodle lessons for these activities, he does not do so for concern about Doodle wanting to be able to do them, but because he wants Doodle to be able to be a ‘normal’ brother.

The Scarlet Ibis bird symbolizes Doodle; this symbolism can be seen by the authors description of both Doodle’s and the Scarlet Ibis’s appearance after death. After the Scarlet Ibis fell from the bleeding tree his “long, graceful neck jerked twice into an S, then straightened out,” (Hurst 4) and he died. After Doodle’s death his brother finds “him huddled beneath a nightshade bush beside the road,” (Hurst 4) where he lay dead. The way Doodle fell made “his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim,” (Hurst 4). Much like the long legs of the Scarlet Ibis, “his little legs bent sharply at the knees,” making them seem “so fragile, so thin,” (Hurst 4). This description of Doodle allows the reader to imagine him like the Scarlet Ibis, with his seemingly long neck and thin, fragile legs. Both Doodle and the Scarlet Ibis have this appearance after they fall to their death. Hurst utilizes very similar descriptive words when describing both the Scarlet Ibis and Doodle’s appearance after death, so that readers can better see the symbolism of the two.
