The Salvation Army was established in London's East End in 1865 by William Booth and his wife Catherine. Initially, Booth named the association the East London Christian Mission. The name The Salvation Army developed from an occurrence on May 19 and 20. William Booth was writing a letter to his secretary George Scott Railton and said, "We are a volunteer army." Bramwell Booth heard his dad and said, "Volunteer! I'm no volunteer, I'm a regular!" Railton was told to cross out "volunteer" and substitute "salvation". The Salvation Army was designed according to the military, with its own particular flag and its own songs, frequently with words set to popular and folkloric tunes sung in the bars. Booth and other officers in "God's Army" would wear the Army's own uniform, for gatherings and service work. He became "General" and his different clergymen were given proper ranks as "officers". Training began for Black volunteers at Camp Meigs in Readville, MA on February 21, 1863. Although some members of the community voiced opposition to the prevention of Black men from achieving the rank of colonel or officer, most community activists urged Black men to seize the opportunity to serve in the Union forces. The fear many Black volunteers had about the potential racism of White officers and colonels was calmed when Massachusetts Governor John Andrew assured Bostonians that White officers assigned to the 54th Regiment would be "young men of military experience, of firm anti-slavery principles, ambitious, superior to a vulgar contempt for color, and having faith in the capacity of colored men for military service." Williams, along with 11 friends, were troubled by what he saw in the streets and offered Bible study and prayer for young men trying to seek refuge from life on the streets. The YMCA was very different organization than what had been seen before. It offered openness to its members from all the social classes.
One subject that simply can not be ignored no matter where you find yourself in Anaheim. The homeless population in Anaheim is rapidly growing and there seems to be no end to this conundrum. Sadly, these poor individuals can be found anywhere some small amount of shelter is. Thus, you can constantly find them lingering around parks or on the sides of freeways waiting to beg the next passerby for enough money to make it through the day. In Anaheim they can usually found at the various parks we have around the city. The heart of a person is only so delicate to feel remorse or sadness whilst the less fortunate of society wanders within their eyes. But surprisingly enough when the time comes down to it you often hear the phrase,

The Salvation Army uses the Aristotelian appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos to convince the audience that donating to their company will provide hope to underprivileged people around the world. Utilizing the image of distressed children for provides the use of pathos, logical facts for logos, and their company’s creditability for ethos. Affecting the advertisement the most dramatically, is the idea that donating to the Salvation Army is a way to give hope to individuals who are affected from natural disasters. Visually, a young boy is holding another young boy, who is most likely, his brother in his arms. Covered in dirt and cuts, the boys are also wearing tattered and ripped clothing. In addition the boys have no shoes, showing their damaged dirty feet. A bottle on the side near the boys has dirty water in it, displaying the idea of no clean drinking water. Correspondently, the children are sleeping on dirty stairs showing they are homeless with no food, clean water, and no clean clothing. On the bottom right corner of the ad there is the Salvation Army logo. Near the bottom there is the contact information to donate and learn more about the charity. Similarity, there is also a small memo describing what the donation provides to individuals in natural disasters and what they will receive from the Salvation Army. For example, it provides emotional support and helps the injured and heartbroken people. In bold font “Giving Hope Today”, is written on the advertisement, providing the idea that donation to the Salvation Army is more than just providing necessary support and needs to individuals affected by natural disasters, but it provides hope and a future.
In 1630, the Massachusetts Bay Company set sail to the New World in hope of reforming the Church of England. While crossing the Atlantic, John Winthrop, the puritan leader of the great migration, delivered perhaps the most famous sermon aboard the Arbella, entitled “A Model of Christian Charity.” Winthrop’s sermon gave hope to puritan immigrants to reform the Church of England and set an example for future immigrants. The Puritan’s was a goal to get rid of the offensive features that Catholicism left behind when the Protestant Reformation took place. Under Puritanism, there was a constant strain to devote your life to God and your neighbors. Unlike the old England, they wanted to prove that New England was a community of love and individual worship to God. Therefore, they created a covenant with God and would live their lives according to the covenant. Because of the covenant, Puritans tried to abide by God’s law and got rid of anything that opposed their way of life. Between 1630 and the 18th century, the Puritans tried to create a new society in New England by creating a covenant with God and living your life according to God’s rule, but in the end failed to reform the Church of England. By the mid 1630’s, threats to the Puritans such as Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and Thomas Hooker were being banned from the Puritan community for their divergent beliefs. 20 years later, another problem arose with the children of church members and if they were to be granted full membership to the church. Because of these children, a Halfway Covenant was developed to make them “halfway” church members. And even more of a threat to the Puritan society was their notion that they were failing God, because of the belief that witches existed in 1692.
A deeply religious man, Harrison taught Sunday school. He became a deacon of the Presbyterian Church in 1857, and was elected the elder of the church in 1861. In 1862, Governor Olive P. Morton asked Harrison to recruit and command the 70th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War. Harrison accepted the challenge, he said. He was a fearless commander and rose to the rank of brigadier general “for ability and manifest energy and gallantry in command of the brigade.”
The Salvation Army is well known around the world as a charity to help people living in poverty. Less known about The Salvation Army is that its original purpose was to become a form of religion. William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army did not want the purpose of The Salvation Army to stray too far from the idea that all people are free to worship Christ. It was because Booth believed that the most efficient way to reach people living in poverty was to offer them food, clothing, and shelter while preaching to them. Booth was a very religious person from a very young age, more so after his family had lost their money and William had to work to get money for his family. Booth's understanding of life in poverty and his love for God would reflect in his life after he became a preacher. Soon after Booth had gotten his first full time preaching job, he met the love of his life and his partner in creating a faith, Catherine Mumford, who was also a very religious individual. He would also meet George S. Railton, who believed that God was more important than any worldly possessions. Railton would later become Booth's first lieutenant and a huge factor in the way the Salvation Army was run during the first years. --- William Booth believed that every person deserved to know Jesus regardless of their social class and that he should save everyone from Atheism.

Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
The Charity Organization Society was based in the scientific movement of organizations. Workers believed that charity work needed more definition and organization and that charity should be focused more on individual need rather than as a whole population. Focusing on individual need was intended to improve relief operations while making resources more efficient. They also intended to eliminate public outdoor relief. With the promotion of more organization and efficiency the new Charity Organization Societies were born. Trattner states that these new requirements for organization and efficiency spread so “rapidly that within 6 years 25 cities had such organizations and by the turn of the century there were some 138 of them in existence” (Trattner, 1999).
