Hi Sarah, interesting post! I never thought that the black and blue or white and gold were a part of a campaign by the Salvation Army. I thought that went viral because of "fun" purpose. The real campaign behind the debate of the dress color was very meaningful. I think The Salvation Army can integrate the use of social media with their Integrated Marketing Communications strategy successfully. According to Mangold & Faulds, 2009, an organization may link their values with the message of the campaign. As The Salvation Army is a nonprofit community that want to contribute into society, the use of this campaign can reflect their organizational value. However, do you think that the discussions of the campaign became a humorous debate over the
Growing up I always had to deal with the fact that my father was involved in the military. My father was deployed twice: once in Germany, and later to Kuwait. I was only four years old when he first traveled and almost every day I asked where dad was. The second time I was fourteen, and I was devastated that my best friend wasn’t going to be home for a year. Both times he left, it was awful for my mom, my brother, and me because he was the one person that kept us together as a family and once he was gone we were just broken. A military family goes through more than a regular family does in a year. Those veterans have families, how do people think they feel. Children who live in a military family have a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental issues. Although many people believe that we should send our soldiers overseas to keep our country safe, there is no reason why our
We see these people everyday; we thank them for their service. There is several holidays to honor them. Some are our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, or even someone that we hold dear to our hearts. They are our veterans of many wars and conflicts that America has been in. We salute them, give them parades, and special parking at different establishments. However, what about those who return from war with nothing? No home, family, and money for whatever reasons. They are homeless veterans.
The Salvation Army is a well-known organization that has a purpose of helping humans however they can (The Salvation Army USA). A lesser known organization, but still an important one, is called Carehaven. Carehaven works to help women and children who have been victims of abuse (Rajh-Gopaul). These groups use a powerful visual of a bruised woman to effectively show the lack of attention and care for victims of abuse. This PSA encourages the viewers to take action, whether they need help, or they are willing to help others. Emotional appeals, logic, and relatability help these organizations to inspire their audience to be aware of the abuse that is so commonly overlooked.
The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless estimates that between 2014 and 2015, 125,848 Chicagoans were homeless. 20,205 homeless students were identified by Chicago Public Schools. 98.1% of the students identified were 'children of color ', and 18.3% were diagnosed with disabilities or developmental delays. 54,638 students were identified throughout all of Illinois. People living in families comprise half of Chicago 's homeless population. 14% of Chicago 's homeless adults were employed.
#BlackLivesMatters is more than a hashtag, it is a social liberation movement. Coming to fruition in 2012 after the infamous Trayvon Martin murder case, Black Lives Matter was born as a reaction to the great injustice this case displayed towards a young black teen. As a social movement Black Lives Matter uses multiple communicative methods to spread their message. By combining traditional methods like peaceful protests called StandUp in their events calendar, with contemporary communication applications like Twitter, Black Lives Matter has gained much support and power. The key to the buzzing conversation surrounding Black Lives Matter can be attributed to their integration of popular communicative techniques, specifically Twitter. By combining
have you ever seen a commercial asking for donations for a foreign cause? Almost all the charities that you will see will be for overseas America has issues just like other countries, just America 's issues are cover up by the more fortunate. There are hundreds of charities around the world for many different things. There is charities for kids, dogs, cats, birds, snakes, fish, disease, and pretty well anything you can think of, but most of these charities focus on foreign issues. in the case of most charities, 25% of the donation money doesn’t make it to the cause, it goes to the volunteers or ads, this is even with non profit organizations. Americans donate a minimum of 16 billion dollars per year to
The Homeless in America I never imagined that I would be homeless. " Although I have read this statement over and over again, the facts behind it remain astonishing. The facts are that there are millions of homeless people in America today. Many of these people had no choice but to become homeless. Economic problems such as being laid off work, or the rise in the cost of housing, have led people to live on the streets.
Homelessness is an increasing problem in many cities today. More and more people litter street corners with cardboard signs begging for spare change. Numerous research and studies have been conducted as to how these unfortunate people have become homeless, but more importantly, ways to permanently help their situations. Both Derek Thompson’s article “Should you give money to homeless people?” and Bobby Magill’s article “Grand Junction comes to terms with homeless” claim that a substantial gift of direction and support instead of loose change will create the greatest, lasting impact in the homeless’ lives. Although both authors successfully use rhetorical strategies to make their arguments, Bobby Magill’s
“What if you woke up today with what you thanked God for yesterday?” I saw this sign hanging on a wall at a friends house, and it shocked me when I read it. I would have absolutely nothing. I have so much to be thankful for, but I never thought about any of it. I would not have any of my possessions, that at this point in time seemed like necessities, or any of my friends and family. I am not saying you have to become religious to be thankful for something, but there are people that do not have any of these things that we find necessary for basic survival. After a long day at school or work some people do not have the privilege of laying in a nice comfy bed, and have the privilege of having food at their disposal whenever they desire. These less fortunate people make up the homeless population in not only the US, but the world. Homelessness is a problem, because society stereotypes and discriminates against them, it has been on the rise without any effort to stop it, and it is dangerous to peoples health.

In the United States, it is practically impossible to walk down most streets without coming across a homeless person. The issue of homelessness has worsened because of the number of veterans back from our most recent wars. They have resorted to homelessness as their only refuge after being unable to maintain a stable home and/or not receiving the treatments they need. But as veteran homelessness demands more attention, especially in California, various solutions are being brought to action. The “housing-first strategy” being offered to homeless veterans and those endangered of becoming homeless, has played a major part in moving California closer to having an end to veteran homelessness in 2015.
I have lived less than fifty miles from the University of Tennessee my whole life. That means that I have grown up learning the phrases ‘bleeding orange’, and singing “Rocky Top”. However, Volunteer spirit is more than cheering at the football game. Don’t get me wrong, I love football just as much as the next Tennessean, but for me that’s not the point. Volunteer Spirit is about a sense of community.
After a massive powerful storm hit the northern Illinois service area of electric utility Commonwealth Edison on July 11, 2011, more than 900,000 customers were left without power during a hot, humid summer. ComEd crews and assistances from other states worked for days afterward the storm to restore services. Meanwhile, the company’s months-old social media (eChannels) strategy was put to its first major test. Its social media strategy goal was to “ understand the customers – ask, listen and be responsive,” enhance and communicate ComEd’s brand,” and “develop a consistent communications message for customers, employees, stakeholders and regulators.” They also followed six-part approach to using social media - monitor, respond, analyze, market, share and collaborate. (Commonwealth Edison: The Use of Social Media in Disaster Response, Page 5 & 6.) The social media team/crew, part of ComEd’s customer operations division, worked around the clock to respond to posts from customers on Facebook and Twitter. Engaging directly through social media was a good way to display and strengthen their relationships with customers and the general public, which was consistent with its corporate goal: “Keep the lights on and information flowing.” (Page 2.) The crew also did good job on handling customer quires, answer each individual tweet, and continued working for two weeks to be sure all questions were answered, directin...

Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
