The Sabbath
The Sabbath has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. Its
been practiced by the Jews on the sixth day of the week ;Saturday;
since the days of Jesus life and that’s the reason why you will not
see out many Jews on the Sabbath as Jesus and God explained it’s the
day of rest. Even though God rested on the seventh day (Genesis
chapter 1-2) and not the sixth this being Sunday in our calendar, but
to explain this the Jewish week starts with Sunday so Saturday is
after all the last day of their week.
Sabbath in Jewish means rest, so the Jews followed gods example and
rest from Fridays sunset to Saturdays sunset. The Jews believe that
that the Sabbath is a day set aside for God to worship him and rest.
It is celebrated at home with a special family meal on a Friday
evening and to then go to the synagogue and pray.
Unnecessary work is much avoided along with the other 39 rules the
Jews set to make the Sabbath a day of rest and to enforce these rules
there are also the 10 commandments to make the Sabbath a very strict
practice known throughout the world.
The Pharisees were these powerful preachers which spread and taught
the Jewish religion in with their own altered points, which often
ended up gaining them more control and power. The Pharisees had been
giving the complete opposite teachings and knowledge of the Sabbath.
They were taking the Jews in the wrong direction. There rules for the
Sabbath were very extravagant like no Jews were allowed to do any kind
of work or job related hobby, nothing. If you were caught doing any
job during the Sabbath day then you’d be punished and even trialed

The Sabbath is designed as a day of rest after working for six days, no work including sport is to be performed on this day. When God created the earth, he set aside the seventh day as a day of rest after all the hard work he had done.
It can be determined as an act of ministering to others which surpasses the law (v. 12). One of the leading areas of conflict between Jesus and Pharisees was in keeping the Sabbath. In this passage, Jesus is criticized for allowing his followers to pluck and eat grain on the Sabbath day. The Pharisees regarded this as work, which was forbidden. Jesus rejects both their interpretation and motivation. When reading The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale, Hamlet and The Wife of Bath’s prologue and Tale it is apparent that religion is a very influential theme. I am almost sure that at one point or another you have had conversations about what was right and what was wrong in society, in way or another your input on the subject was determined by your religious belief. Religion during the time these plays were written was very important and you are able to notice since all three plays mention the Bible, different sins or praying and all of these made up a religion. Even if both, Shakespeare and Chaucer were not alive during the same time period they did share the same country of birth and probably the same views on religion. In the Pardoners Prologue, the pardoner benefits from the need of people to seek forgiveness, in Hamlet, Hamlet changed his mind of killing his uncle when he saw him praying, and in The Wife of Bath’s Prologue she turns to the bible attempting to justify herself, all three plays make religion a major part of the development of the story line.

There are many religions that have been picked up throughout the world. Most of these religions rise from some basic religions that have relationships with the belief. Some of the most known religions are Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism among many others. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion and is India's main religion. Unlike many religions Confucianism does not have a higher power they worship, instead, it is an ethical system of philosophical teachings founded by Confucius, a Chinese philosopher and then developed by Mencius (Doniger, 2009).

Religion also has many definitions, usually based on one's experience. A particular definition that I found was Religion originates in an attempt to represent and order beliefs, feelings, imaginings and actions that arise in response to direct experience of the sacred and the spiritual (Connelly, 1986). Religion also has many characteristics such as rituals, symbols and myths which play in an important part in how religion is viewed. We will take a look on how the definition, classification and characteristics of religion and how it ties into our understanding of the universe and our relationship with it.
