In Stephen King’s, The Running Man, Ben Richards goes to the greatest lengths to do everything he can to save his daughter Catherine Sarah, who is sick. The Richards family is in the lower class population, so he needs to find a way to get the money so that he can take care of his daughter. Ben then takes it upon himself to sign up for a reality TV show that is called The Running Man. The purpose of this show is to kill the participants, and the viewers of the show can receive money if they tell “The Games People” about the participant’s whereabouts. Throughout the show he will get paid $100 for every hour he is alive and additional money if he kills any law enforcement, and if he survives he will receive a grand prize of $1 billion dollars. …show more content…
The likelihood of staying alive is very slim, considering that no one has ever survived the entire 30 days. This dystopian novel tells the readers that the world is becoming more uncivilized but the love a father has for his daughter will allow him to push through great trials to do the best he can for her. There are a couple themes that come to mind when thinking of this story.
One being the love that a father has for his daughter. Ben, the father to Catherine Sarah is willing to risk his life on this horrible TV show that puts the world against him. Anyone can turn you in for money, so making friends and relying on others is very hard for the participants. Although Ben finds a way to do this and gets lucky with who he has chosen to trust. Leaning on others to do things and having those people not turn Ben is something that is very important in the games. Being able to rely on friends was another theme found in the story. It was very important that Ben learn who to trust and who not to trust during this …show more content…
time. The story that King tells the audience about Ben, enrolling himself in the games to get money used for medicine to help his daughter, is an example of what parents will do for their kids.
This is one of the themes found throughout the story. Ben continued to think of his daughter and tell others along his path why he was doing this, always explaining that his daughter Catherine Sarah was at home and has very little access to the pharmaceutical drugs to take care of her illness. When Bradley asks why he was doing this show he replies “My little girl’s name is Cathy…Younger than Cassie. Pneumonia. She cries all the time, too.” (King 1) Ben had tried everything he could to provide what was needed for his daughter but at this point he was saying “I went for the money the only way I could.” (King 1) The other theme throughout the novel is lean on friends. Richards had been walking in the alley and ran into Stacey, a young African American boy. Stacey then took Richards to his home, and even risked being caught with him. Upon their arrival at Stacey’s home they were greeted by Bradley, Stacey’s brother. After talking a bit, Stacey and Bradley had come up with a plan to get Richards out of Boston secretly. Through the use of help of others, he made the trip in the trunk of a car without getting
caught. On the KTLA news, there is a tragic story of another horrifying shooting in Menasha, Wisconsin. The gunman had opened fire on victims he did not know on a pedestrian bridge and Erin Stoffel and her family were some of the people there at that time. Her husband and 11-year-old daughter were shot and killed. Erin Stoffel herself was shot three times and still was able to get her two other kids off of that bridge and to a safe place. During the shooting Erin got her young son to run for and get help. Erin and her son are very heroic in this story, even with the loss of life that did happen, they still prevented the situation getting worse. This story shows that the love a parent has for their children is so strong that it can take three bullets and still get them to safety. This story relates to me because I always had the hardest time finding someone to trust with everything. I trusted my family of course but I needed that friend that I could just tell everything to without judgment or worry of them telling someone. Before college I never really had great luck with friends, I had friends but they were people where I was always worried about getting judged. Luckily in college I have an abundance of friends that I can trust with anything. They are there for me through thick and thin. I have now learned that I can rely on others for help, you just need to be careful who to trust. This book is very different from anything I had read before. The author did an amazing job with the details of this book and really highlighted what the future may look like. Though it is terrifying to think that maybe our future would look something like the book. I would recommend this book because it makes you think. While reading this book I often thought about, “How did the country get to this point?” and “What events led up to this point to make the country like this?” This story provides the reader with thought provoking plot and keeps the reader imagining what they would do in Ben’s situation. "Running for His Life" In the story "Running for His Life", Michael Hall explains the genocide that Gilbert Tuhabonye experienced when he was in high school in East Africa and how he managed to escape and begin a new life in Austin, Texas. Friends of theirs burned and beat to death the teachers and Tutsi teenagers. However, if students tried to evacuate the building they would be killed. The building was on fire, burning corpses, and burning to death many students.
The other main theme is the role of family. In the beginning, Jeanne’s family is a close-knit one. Ko is a strong patriarch and the 10 siblings are close. By the end, the siblings are scattered across the country. Ko has lost most of the respect his children had and is scraping by in life.
In the book Always Running written by Luis J. Rodriguez we meet the author at a young age, We accompany him as he grows into the Veteran gang lifestyle. Throughout the autobiography, Luis, a young Chicano who survived ¨La Vida Loca¨ in South San Gabriel gives voice to an unheard cry and illuminates the cycle of poverty and violence of gang wars. His families instability and the discrimination they received due to their ethnicity gives him a desire to hurt others and seek understanding in a deviant way. Rodriguez speaks on many of the issues we still see in our Latino communities today, The lack of resources; financially and emotionally. He narrates his own internal and external battles to gain respect, belonging, and protection.
In conclusion, the author used a theme that conflict helps strengthen bonds. Some may argue that the main theme is about friendship. Though the author does mention this theme several themes it is not the main theme because it is not used often. The author spends more time emphasizing the value of relations between people and how they grow in times of conflict. Overall, the author uses emotional ways of the show not tell in a well-crafted novel to help readers know how we can connect it to our daily
Often times when we read a piece of literature little pieces of information are overlooked, not capturing the true meaning of the story. Feminist Criticism is the focus on the relationship between men and women. In the story "The Chaser" by John Collier, feminist criticism was well hidden. When I first read the story, I didn't see anything that lead to feminist criticism but as I reread the story I started to see a few examples. In "The Chaser", Alan, a young man was seeking for love in all the wrong places. He went to an old man who was said to have a love potion. He wanted his partner, Diana, to be completely in love with him. He had a perfect image of what love should be and how she should treat him and that is what he wanted, he wanted
The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town’s only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.
The major themes related directly to the entire context of the story. The formidable mother-daughter conflict going on throughout the story exposed the clash of their cultural roots. The conflict showed the theme where the mother does not understand the game of chess and does not accept Waverly playing it. Also, it showed it when Waverly felt embarrassed by her mother using her as a trophy metaphorically. Another theme is the symbolic games of chess that Waverly played. Without the use of symbolism the story would have lost a major impact on the plotline. Also, Amy Tan used setting to her advantage to fully show the tone of the story and created a scene of emotion. Its major theme of mother-daughter relationship made it possible for young children to relate the short story to their own
In the seventh chapter of Christopher McDougall’s book, Born to Run, published in 2009, McDougall Meets Caballo Blanco. McDougall cornered Caballo in a hotel and started asking him questions. Caballo agreed to talk with McDougall as long as he got some beans from one of his mamá’s. Caballo started talking about his past. He explained that his real name was Micah True and he originated from California. McDougall then ended the chapter by explaining that Caballo relaxed after a couple beers and went on to tell more stories.
One theme is learning to deal with death. People deal with death in many different ways, and it shows in this story. Anse took Addie's death rather well, which shows that they didn't have a very loving marriage. Most of the children, however, mourned the death of their mother greatly. Some children weren't as sad as others because their mother had been sick for a while and they knew she was going to die. One son was always crying because he and his mother were very close. But one child, Dewey, became pregnant about a month before her mother died. While everyone was trying to set up the funeral for Addie, Dewey was stopping at every store possible to try and find a drug that would abort her baby. She had so much anxiety worrying about this baby that she didn't have time to mourn the death of her
Game shows are meant to be a fun way to test skills and earn money. In Steven King’s The Running Man, a science fiction book taking place in a dystopian society, the aspect of “it’s all fun and games,” completely diminishes. The protagonist, a poor man named Benjamin Richards, must run from a group of people trying to kill him for thirty days. If he succeeds, he wins an astonishing one billion dollars. Richards displays strong characteristics such as intelligence, arrogance, and dauntlessness.
In the article, “Running for His Life,” the journalist Michael Hall shares a dramatic story of Gilbert Tuhabonye, who was a runner and a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide. Michael Hall narrates Tuhabonye’s horrendous story about how as a kid, him and thousands of other students at Kibimba School in Burundi at three in the morning some of the students were either beaten or burned alive by friends or relatives that they knew. This was between the Hutu mob and Tutsi. In order for him to not suffer from the pain he wanted to kill himself. However, he heard a voice saying, “You don’t want to die. Don’t do that.” He escaped by breaking through windows because he wanted his friends and family to identify his body. He jumped in the darkness, but no one saw him. His health was
Images enter one eye, and then go out the other! When was the last time you stopped to consider the distinctively visual elements, in a text you may have read? Have you ever considered how language affects our comprehension and shapes definition in any given text? If your answer is no, then the reason for that is quite simple.
