The award-winning novel by Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers: Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, discusses one of the greatest examples of mission command in the form of 1st Lieutenant Richard Winters and his role in the Brecourt Manor Assault. This battle is a textbook example of how to fight against a superior enemy force that outnumbered the unit by four times as much. Facing overwhelming odds with just 16 paratroopers against over 60 German Soldiers, 1LT Winters nevertheless prevails and succeeds in achieving his objective while minimizing casualties to just three Soldiers lost. Looking back further into the American Revolution, the Battle of Bunker Hill on the American side is one of the earliest examples of Mission Command under the command of COL William Prescott.
As the incoming brigade commander, LTC (P) Owens, I see the critical leadership problem facing the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) is the inability or unwillingness of Colonel Cutler to lead and manage change effectively. In initial talks with Col Cutler and in reviewing the brigade’s historical unit status reports, the 4th ABCT performed as well as can be expected in Afghanistan, but as the onion was peeled back there are numerous organizational issues that were brought to the surface while I walked around and listened to the soldiers of the 4th ABCT, in addition to reviewing the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) report. One of the most formidable tasks of a leader is to improve the organization while simultaneously accomplishing
Training as an unexperienced soldier, then fighting in a war, only several months later, for your country just shows how much fearlessness and guts this whole division had, classifying them as the best division to ever be a part of the United States Army.

The United States of America has come a long way in getting to the status it holds today in the world in terms of its military muscle. One of the major milestones in this journey was the establishment of the First Special Service, otherwise called the Devil’s Brigade or the Black Devils’ Brigade. The special unit among the United States forces was formed in the course of the World War II. Initially, the plan was to incorporate Canada and Norway in establishing a special elite force that would help in the activities of the war. However, Norwegian forces withdrew leading to collaboration between the United States Forces and Canada .
In the late May in 1918, the German forces put together four divisions and launched the Aisne offensive. The bombardment began at one in the morning on May 27th. The British and French front lines were torn apart by the current waves of German infantry and artillery. Both armies began to disintegrate before the might of the Germans, and were unable to halt the advancement of their awesome force. The Germans didn’t press further after the Marnes River, giving the French time to call in reinforcements and American assistance. When the American forces arrived, a French office asked Marine Colonel Wendell C. Neville if a tactical retreat would be in order, he replied with th...
By the summer of 1943 the Allied Powers had finished their campaigns in North Africa. Their next objective was to move into Sicily and invade Italy to cause the Germans to move northwest from the coast. This came to be known as “Operation Husky which was designed to open the shipping lanes in the Mediterranean, eliminate it as an Axis base, and to aid in the fall of Mussolini’s government” (Hickman n.d.). In July 8th, 1943 Mowat, now an intelligence officer was ordered to head to Sicily to participate in Operation Husky. They left the night of the 8th and encountered terribly rough seas due to the sirocco. The sirocco is an intense wind that comes off of the Sahara. It looked as though Operation Husky would be cancelled. Fortunately, later that night the wind slowed and the platoons were able to continue with the operation. The invasion commenced on the night of July 9th, landing on the west side of the Pachi...
While the Battle of the Bulge was starting the Soviets were also fighting the Germans on the other side of Germany. Whenever the Allied forces invaded Normandy on D-Day the Germans were forced to fight on two sides. Whenever this had happened the German or Nazi army was stretched thin, causing them to lose a lot of ground to the Allied forces. On December the 16th the Germans decided to try and gain back some of the ground they lost Adolf Hitler pulled all his reserves up for the battle and made a surprise attack against the Americans and British. The Germans secretly formed in the Ardenne forrest and then attacked at Bastogne where the American 101st airborne division was deployed at. The 101st one of the most famous battalions in all of WWII was completely held off from reinforcements and supplies and they not only were low on supplies they were completely taken by surprise. ( William 21-25 )
One of the most famous Pals Battalion was the Bradford Pals who were in the battle of Somme. They Were all from the town of Radford and over 200 of them left school at Radford High to join the military. The Battle of Somme as recalled by members of the battalion, “ We were wiped out door to door.”1 There were many casualties and only 146 men remained from the 800 men that went into battle with the Bradford Pals. They were just brave volunteers from Bradford who were up against the most trained fighting force in Europe. The German troops were thouroughly trained and were entrenched with machine guns that could cut down British soldiers as they crossed the fields in battle. Despite the large loss of life the Bradford Pals have not been forgotten and are in fact one of the most well known Pals Battalions who ever fought for the British.
It began to emerge the differences in tactics. The question was whether to continue so far the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Forces Europe, General Eisenhower’s tactics attacking on a broad front, or due to problems of supply to take just one mighty blow. In that period Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery developed a new operation plan, which would include the use of 1st Airborne Army (Lieutenant General Lewis H. Brereton), actually 1st Airborne Corps (Lieutenant General Frederick Browning). The Corps comprised of 82nd US Airborne Division (Brigadier General James M. Gavin), 101st US Airborne Division (Major General Maxwell D. Taylor), and 1st British Airborne Division (Major General Robert “Roy” E. Urquhart) supported with, under his command, 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade (Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski). These units should be dropped along the roa...
During the Italian Campaign in World War Two, many tactics were utilized by both sides. The Allies started this with Operation Husky on the island of Sicily. While attacking this island, they used two groups of men. One group was British commanded by Montgomery, and the other was American and under the orders of General Patton. While the British troops attacked the island on the east side, Patton and the Americans battled from the west coast. During the invasion there were roughly 25 miles between the two attacking groups. Because of the tactics to attack from different sides, the capture of Sicily took just thirty-eight days. In this capture, the allies were eventually able to take the strait of Messina, which was used by Montgomery’s men.
The dates of the battle were only a short period of time during many of WWII 1939-1945. The push was called upon to divide Axis forces in the north and south and gain control of the Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea which would cut off Axis and provide a major logistical advantage for the Allied Forces. The Axis wanted to take control of North Africa and assure its control over Italy and Europe. The Allies launched an offensive objective to Northwest Africa under the name Operation Torch, in order to establish an Allied front. The campaign would clear the Axis Front from North Africa, improve naval control of the Mediterranean Sea and prevent Axis of having a possible staging area for the Luftwaffe to launch further attacks.
“Operation Overlord” landed a physical and psychological blow in which the Germans would never recover. The amphibious landing along the beaches of Normandy
Harmony between the forces was again stressed and Eisenhower needed a staff that would follow through with this. Eisenhower now left the operation into the hands of the soldiers on Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha, and Utah beaches. Operation OVERLORD was the largest amphibious landing ever in history. The previous operations and landing in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy helped prepare the leaders and troops for this day. By the end of June, the Allied forces had landed over one million men and near 585,000 tons of supplies to support them, Operation ANVIL in southern France was also helping with them sending men to Europe. Then by then of August some two million men were in France and heading toward Paris. Eisenhower was optimistic about the success of the operation and was determined that the work after it would also be
The Casablanca Conference was called to decide what path the Allies would take. After several days of meeting, the Allies chose to invade Italy. The Italian Campaign, or sometimes better known as "Code Name Husky," had two goals. These goals were simple: Secure the central Mediterranean, and lead the Axis powers from Northwest France and the English Channel. On July 10, 1943, after thirty eight days of fighting, the Allies finally drove the Axis troops out of Sicily. They would now prepare for the invasion of mainland
